Let's Find Out if 3 Cylinders are Enough in the 2022 Nissan Rogue

Here's a look at the 2022 Nissan Rogue, which uses a new turbocharged three-cylinder engine. In this video, we'll compare the 3-cyl Rogue to the competition and take it for a drive to determine whether a turbocharged three-cylinder is enough in a world of naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder competitors.

The acceleratoin is pretty much class competative. If its "slow", they're all slow save for something like Mazda CX-5 turbo or RAV4 Prime. I honestly don't think its fair to call it marginal or borderline dangerous.

I suggest ppl test drive. The engine is perfectly powerful for 99% of drivers. Nice balance of power and economy. Even most professional reviewer on KZfaq seem to enjoy the new engine.

We just bought a 24 SL with the premium package. At first I said no to the salesman! I told him I wouldn’t even consider a turbo engine. So that’s when he said “so a three cylinder turbo would be def out!? Anyway, when he told me that with all new vehicles, the dealer ads a full lifetime warranty against all power transmission items with no mileage cut off. So yeeeeaaaa I’ll take a chance. As of the current 124 miles we have on it, no issues!!!

You’re out of your mind. That engine is fantastic. Under 8 sec to 60 mph is no slouch. Btw, the VC turbo, in 4 cyl form, has been used by Infiniti for some time now.

Since 2018 I believe...in the Nissan Altima too. It's a 4 cylinder 2.0 liiter with both port AND direct injection (fantastic) but unfortunately the 3 cylinder version only has direct injection, so that means way way down the road it'll have carbon buildup on the backs of the intake valves. I will have traded in my 22 Rogue before that time comes.

The engine sound your hearing upon acceleration is like a "simulated V6" coming through the speakers. It sounds WAY WAY better and throatier then the old 4cyl. I also find the turbo too be plenty powerful again over the older 4cyl CVT.

Man for that suv that small turbo does a lot. I had a 2018 rogue, then a 2020 rogue sport and now this 2023 1.5 turbo and I can say this thing is no slouch. There is a big difference in power and how this vehicle performs, all my other Nissans rogues have had no issues with cvt because I always trade them for something newer.it’s a family vehicle not a race car !

The additional acceleration phenomenon feels to me like the cvt "unwinding??" Very odd. I actually like the 3cyl much more than the old 4 banger. Sounds ok, and in manual mode it masks the cvt okay ish for a cuv. Better mpg than the rogue sport too. I'd still prefer a CX-5.

We had 2 Rogues, 2015 and 2019... awesome machines.. they never "drowned" when flooring it ( I guess due the "aspirated" system that you mentioned ).. i wonder if a 3cyl Turbo would work exactly the same....I guess Im gonna have to try it to make sure it does not hesitate when shifting or so... ( nice house btw! ) 11:55 is exactly what I meant... small Ford, Chev, the Compass, they have always put me in that position...

A note on power delivery: The AWD version of this vehicle, which is providing power to 4 wheels instead of 2, will behave a bit differently because it is heavier and because the CVT has to send power to the front as well as rear tires, all while using the same engine. For everyday driving, most customers will not notice much of a difference. If you are an enthusiast, like me, there are a couple of things you can do to make the Rogue more responsive. 1) Sport mode. Select Sport mode instead of Normal mode on your middle console before or during your drive. 2) Use the paddle shifters. The Rogue's computer will learn your driving style, to a degree, and the CPU inside the vehicle, which is tied into all the driving dynamics systems, will deliver power - within limits - tailored to the way that you normally drive. A tip on paddle shifting: Like a manual transmissiion, traveling down one gear for "boost" won't really do much - downshift a couple of clicks when it is safe to do so, and the engine will roar. The CPU will do its best to ensure that you are not redlining the engine by limiting your revs and downshifts - you will hear a beep as the vehicle refuses to make an unsafe downshift. I have owned a 1998 Maxima 5 speed, a 2004 Maxima 6 speed, a 2015 Altima, a 2017 Altima SR, a 2022 Altima SR, and now a 2023 Nissan Rogue. My 2023 Rogue has an engine that is easily as responsive as my 2004 Maxima - and the Rogue is half that engine with a turbo attached. I have actually been shocked at the acceleration from my Rogue several times - it knows what I want, and when I ask, it becomes a beast. - Chipper F. Xavier, Esq.

How is that slow? The delay is actually not the turbo or the cvt. Put it in Sport mode and the delay mostly disappears. And you can leave it in Sport and operate the gas pedal smartly and still get ok fuel economy. IN Sport mode when commanding power it'll give it quicker - and it'll suck more gas at that exact time, of course.

Hey Chris, love the channel, a the way you deliver your reviews. I'm in the market for a new vehicle, like the exterior and interior styling. I don't mind a CVT, as long as it's reliable. The three cylinder engine is a no for me. The tubo is a no for me also. Is the three cylinder turbo going to be the only engine option henceforth? I just what an reliable, relatively uncomplicated engine. Something with adequate power for hills and passing. I guess I'll be shopping for a Toyota.
@ChrisONeillUSA
@ChrisONeillUSA Жыл бұрын
Personally I like the Toyota stuff, especially hybrids. Wouldn't be surprised if the 3-cyl became the only option in the Rogue. Powertrain in the Rogue, like I said, is a little meh, but overall wouldn't deter me from considering it. Especially if the price was right. Most vehicles are going smaller displacement + turbo, for better or worse. Ruling out all turbos will start to limit your options more and more as the years go by, but I get it. Good luck with your search!

I have this new 22, it's FWD and basically I really like it in the SV trim. BUT when my radio is off, I can hear this annoying whistle or whirr noise above say 35 mph. It's most noticeable upon decelerating from say 45 or 50. I've been told by a service writer on a test drive that it's probably the turbo making this whirring noise. I swear I didn't hear it on the test drive before I purchased it 5 months ago. Anyone else out there have the new 22 Turbo Rogue and hear this same whirr? I'm hoping that someone sees this and replies back with "heard the same noise, my dealer fixed mine!".

Or you'll just buy from a dealer that has a 10 year unlimited miles warranty which there are many and drive it 400k miles in 5 years and get an engine for free??? Who would put a new engine in 1? Just buy a used engine and get someone 2 pit it in for 3000 or less if it does break in over 200k miles.

You would benefit from a better camera setup. And overlay more B-roll. Does Nissan give you any marketing video stuff? Like you could overlay some stuff about the engine when talking about that. Just some unsolicited advice.

My goal isn't to make an ad for Nissan. It's to share information to help people sift through all the predatory automaker messaging that's out there. Professionally shot and edited b-roll meant to show the car only in a positive light would just detract from that.
