We have a power plant close to me here in Minnesota that keeps the river in town from freezing so we have Canadian geese that are here year round. They absolutely devastate the soybeans in places. A lot of guys put land along waterways into conservation programs because the geese were eating the crops. At night you can watch hundreds of them flying back into town after feeding.

Time is of the essence when attempting spraying efficiencies and weed killing with that expensive spray. At 30 mph heading down the road with a self propelled unit that is 20 miles away as on this case, you're their in about 45 minutes. Not even worth the time to chain and boom down that unit, and then load up again just to unload at Homebase.

Yes they would, and it adds reason to everyone's madness. Most likely the owner have cantankerous neighbors and would sooner deal with an outsider, then put up with all that whining year after year. So they just rent their land to those that are happy to farm their land, regardless of distance or trees and sloughs. Our furthest fields are ~70 miles from Homebase.
