Thanks for this. Some how, I hadn't known that you could install XP from DOS.

Well, it's totally installable from DOS and this way you don't have to mess with USB sticks. The only downside is that you have to use a FAT or FAT32 partition. (it can be converted to NTFS later)

This is how I did it back in 2003... but I honestly completely forgot that you can do it from DOS. I think this is the last Windows that can be started from DOS.

Windows XP had setup floppys. WHich won't help, as modern hardware doesn't have native flopy support on them. And USB-floppy (and even blank floppys) are hard to get by.
@O_mores
@O_mores 7 ай бұрын
@@Sypaka Actually any modern BIOS will report an USB floppy as a regular floppy and you can use it as the A: drive in DOS, you can even load drivers during the F6 phase of the XP setup. The problem is that you can use USB emulated devices only in the DOS part of the installation. After XP leaves the real mode and works its own... you loose any connection to the USB and mouse emulated as PS/2 devices by the BIOS, also there no connection to the USB floppy also. The bad part is that XP will access floppy twice for the disk drivers, once in the DOS part where it actually works, and a second time when the connection to the USB emulated floppy is lost. The result is that XP is asking introduce a floppy and press ENTER... and you cannot continue installation.

Integral Edition is the better option, especially if you use the patch integrator. It gives you updated ACPI, AHCI, NVMe and USB 3.0 driver support. Also, ACPI is important! Without it your CPU won't idle properly and end up consuming 150W constantly! I had this issue with my Ryzen 5950X, so use ACPI!
@O_mores
@O_mores 8 ай бұрын
I'm not against ACPI of course... Like I said in the video ACPI is a big deal, but the driver included in this integral edition (supposedly the most recent one) causes a BSOD during the install so the solution to install XP was to do it without ACPI. Later on, you can look for a patched driver and enable ACPI by modifying some registry entries.
@toddfraser7009
@toddfraser7009 8 ай бұрын
@@O_mores The updated ACPI driver isn't integrated into the ISO image by default, it uses the original version of the ACPI driver by default, hence the A5 BSOD. So make sure to use the patch integrator to get all the updated drivers. Disabling ACPI during setup with mean you'll only get 1 CPU core. Enabling ACPI via registry hack doesn't work correctly without the correct ntoskrnl and HAL in place - So a fresh install with ACPI enabled already is best.

Great video and I tried this on my ASRock Z790 PG Sonic Motherboard and it not work. It does have the same socket as your motherboard in this video. But it does not have any PCI Card Slots. Only PCI Express Slots. Are there any PCI-E versions of the VIA SATA adapter? Can you please provide the driver links for the Z790 in the description?

At 1:56 I'm using the UniATA drivers with the on board SATA. So it's possible to use XP on a socket 1700 mobo without any extra adapter. This VIA6421 that I'm usig is only PCI. But almost every SATA I & SATA II PCI-E adapters are XP compatible. (some might be incompatible with your motherboard though) The funny thing with these UniATA drivers is that I couldn't slipstream them into a SP3 ISO using "nLite". (which is the primary tool to make these updated XP ISOs) So I had to install XP using the PCI adapter then I installed the UniATA drivers from the Control Panel. I'll try to add these UniATA drivers manually into a XP ISO, I know how to do it, but it takes time and there are many edits which are necessary in the txtsetup.sif file.

There are modded Intel SATA drivers, that can be integrated into the ISO using nLite

good video man, I wanted to ask if there are 1000 series drivers for xp, I was looking for parts to make a PC with Windows XP, I have a compatible cpu that is a phenom II x6 and I was looking for a more or less contemporary GPU like a Radeon HD 6000/7000 series or something overkill like a gtx 960, but I get them at a price that I don't really like and I don't know how much wear they have, I have a gtx 1050 ti that I don't use and I would like to use it for that pc , but as far as I know XP only has drivers for the RX 300 and GTX 900 or something like that.

From what I know nVidia didn't write XP drivers for the Pascal architecture (series 1000). GTX 1050 is not a rebranded 9xxx Maxwell card, but a genuine Pascal card - so it can't be used with some modded drivers (modified .INFs) from the previous generation. Officially, GTX980/TI are not supported in XP but they work perfectly fine, you just have to look from some drivers with modified .inf like I did in this video.

Interesting. This video makes me wonder, is it possible to use a pci express to pci adapter of some kind if the motherboard does not have a pci slot? I'm talking about the VIA controller you are booting from. Could you use a pci express based ide or sata controller instead? I don't know if this is worth it, you had to replace every single integrated device! Just doing sound over hdmi is kind of interesting, if your monitor has 3.5 out you could plug speakers in. I would think with Windows vista or above you could use SATA natively right? (meaning windows built in sata driver) I don't use hacked drivers, so pretend what I'm saying doesn't involve hacked drivers, it shouldn't need to, I'd rather use IDE than do that.

PCI-E to PCI adapters are very compatible, they work like a regular PCI slot. I have use them with Windows 3.11, 95, NT etc. Having PCI slots right on the motherboard is more ergonomic of course, but makes no difference compatibility wise since most motherboards use the ASMEDIA 1083 PCI-E to PCI bridge chip. Guess what? Most stand alone adapters use the very same chip. (But there are some chips from PLX, Pericom also.) For XP you can solve anything with PCI-E hardware, there are sound cards, LAN adapters, wireless cards, SATA PCI-E adapters with XP drivers.

Did you try integrating the chipset and SATA drivers with Nlite?
@O_mores
@O_mores 8 ай бұрын
Of course, I have done it in the past many times. But this time I used the most recent XP ISO which should have the most recent drivers... Anyway nLite is not perfect - some drivers won't work. I tried to incorporate the UniATA drivers and it didn't end well. I can incorporate drivers manually into txtsetup.sif but there is a lot of editing to do... I did it once for Windows 2000.

Well, games are all fine since you can install GeForce 900 series GPUs using official nVidia drivers... made for XP. A 980Ti should be able to handle Crysis after all... ;))

It was on purpose... Usually I install XP in multi-boot environment and a FAT32 partition can be used in Windows 95/98/Me also. You would be surprised how fast you run out of space, especially when you want to mount some ISO image with Daemon tools.
