Prof, that outro was genuinely one of the best, most savage and erudite things I've ever watched on KZfaq. For some reason the outro where you just shuffled/sleeved cards and this were two of the best things you've ever done. I think it's a huge testament to the aura and depth of the Prof persona that you can just sit there, and it feels intensely personal and intimate. Brian, thanks for sharing the Prof with us and caring enough about MTG to tell it as it really is.

I think that’s what the designer team was told to act like. “Make it *seem* like they’re getting value, but screw them over anyway. And in case there is a good card, be sure to ban it after the next product releases.”

While not entirely wrong the SL cards are only legal in vintage (or us it legacy?) And commander. So far the only standard legal card to be banned in either of those formats is Lurrus in vintage and Lutri in commander. So not really as drastic as you might think but yeah these secret lairs can burn

Sorry to hear that man. It hasn't always been like this. Even if this trend continues you can still jam games with friends and have a good time though (and if you get priced out of magic, you can always proxy cards. 100% the best way to play with expensive cards you want to try.)

Christopher Ruggiero that Wizards will go to a totally crossover time direction and sell cards with crossovers which are not in normal booster boxes but sold by Wizards directly so that you have to buy it directly from them cutting of your local game store or even online game store. But paying shipping and import taxes 😂 not so great

Man, there's some hard feels in this video. I've been playing magic for almost 10 years and feel extremely disenfranchised at this point. It's difficult to imagine how it feels for someone that's been playing for 20+ years and has built a career around it. I'm here to say, that if you are forced to pivot away from Magic for obvious reasons, then I will still watch your content. Love what you do Prof!

I totally feel you, Professor... This week has been such a painful experience. It's hard to put into words how awful it feels to watch a game you've enjoyed and invested so much (not just financially but emotionally, as weird as it may sound) for years and years, goes down the drain in just a few days... I'm personally thinking of just building a cube out of my MTG collection, and have it be just another board game that I can pull out to play with my friends. Maybe that's where it belonged from the very start.

I went ahead and did exactly that and am much happier for it. Now I'll just add a card or two to the cube every once in a while or just make the cube bigger to randomize it some more. I used just whatever cards I had going back to HOU but tried to keep the power levels equal

It's almost as bad for us newer players. I've only been playing for a year, and I have only ever known the world of power creep and overpriced cards. Healthy formats are a myth, relics of the past.

Thank you, as always, for your brutal honesty, professor. I just watched Mitch's latest video, and between the two of you and several other channels, I've never seen so many prolific members of the community this upset... ever. I don't know what Wizards is thinking; their business tactics are just so offensive at this point that they don't even deserve the benefit of the doubt, being called tone deaf; they're malicious in everything they do now, and they don't even care. Again, thank you for helping to spread community awareness on how serious this trend is.

That board games are better and get neglected for collectibles because people love to gamble and Wizards trades in on that knowledge and sells content that is more or less unplayable when you could easily spend your money on something that is 100% playable forever and guaranteed to get your money’s worth? It really upsets me seeing the prof like that. I've been playing this game since I was 8 years old. Almost 20 years now. I've reached the point of why even buy cards anymore. If you want to review or play different games do it. I'll still follow your channel and watch your videos. I still don't know what my relationship with magic will be going forward

Might I recommend xmage? Commander, cubes, sealed, draft, etc, and all rules are handled by the game so you don't have to worry about it, abs it has basically every card for free. If WOTC is going to be scummy enough to do this kind of stuff with secret lair, then we may as well be scummy enough to play magic without paying for it.

Hey, for $50 you could pick up the core rule book for most RPGs, there's a game you can play for literally years with no added cost (tho lets be honest, they get you on the dice addictions)

Most of the companies (that are not WotC) that sell a pdf version are somewhere in the $10-30 dollar range, so pick up a bunch that sound interesting and see see what you like

The last bit really speaks to me. Me and my wife have "pocket money" each month, about $60, I used to spend that on standard... then about a year ago I stopped playing standard, bought a pauper deck IRL and a few on MTGO. With all the money I've saved, by not playing standard, I managed to upgrade my old PC. Every so often, I have a sneaky peak on standard, hoping it's recovered! Love the game, just hate what they've done to it.

Prof! Serious question: How can/should I support my LGS now that I'm disinclined to purchase newer sealed products? My LGS is a one man operation that allowed magic to flourish in my area. He's fair and has even been giving out older surplus promos that he has kicking around from past events to make up for the lack of rewards/event support from wotc. He even refuses to sell older promos that can be upwards of $20 just on principle, because they were always intended to be free. If someone sells a promo to him, he'll even add it to the pool of cards to give out. He's a good guy and I don't want to lose him. He also doesn't believe me at all when I tell him what's happening in the player base might affect him/is affecting him. He just doesn't see it and has complete faith in WORD. I don't want to pick up a Different hobby and I just don't know what to do for him. This is someone who has facilitated casual play and competitive play for his customers. Using his store is 100% free. He opens at 12pm and plans on closing 8pm, but will stay open as long as players need. The D&D players take a long time to finish up and he'll stay open to 2am for them, even though he doesn't make money from them. Please like my comment so Proc will see. I don't want to see LGS suffer for wotc's sins.

Judging by the end of the video I think Prof would recommending still buying products from your LGS. However, not magic products. You LGS sells regular games!! Try a new game, buy an old favorite! There are so many ways to support your LGS. If you took your magic budget and spent it on regular games, you would have so many games that are simply amazing. Give it a shot :)

Love your interest in Legends of Runeterra! As someone who played a ton of Magic, I really liked how LoR took the lessons of Magic and learned from it. It feels bad seeing a lot of my favorite magic content creators so hurt by how the magic community is treated by Wizards. I love your content and will say if you played other board games I would totally watch. I’m getting to the point where I want to support Wizards by buying magic cards. Anyways love you Prof and by the way there is a great drafting card game called Nevermore that you should check out! It has tons of play ability and you can have up to 6 people play at once! It’s super fun!

Which actually highlights another reason I'm glad I gave up the game. Simply put, the investments are artificially inflated, and form a paywall that keeps a lot of people out. How much bigger would the game be if the barrier to entry was not so high?

Fossil Firebird actually the paywall is very small. You can have a fun time playing the game with a group of friends for under 25 each and never have to pay a dime again. Your cost comes from competitive play or the need to have the best deck to beat your friends or competitors. Cost also comes from collecting which is in every single successful game. Part of the fun is to collect them all. The more unique and hard to get you make it the more customers will buy to get it. You do not have to be a collector to be a casual player. I all the time build budget decks that are competitive for folks that cost 10-20 dollars. Most play groups I know well also change decks with each other or let you use a deck. I have 150 comander decks. I’m always loaning one out. Also once you build a comander deck you never have to update it like you do standard when rotation hits. Most my decks was made over 10 years ago.
