As someone whose tried to envisage an open-world pokemon game, I have an appreciation for the pidgeys, ekans and horseas. You need a supporting cast, you know? You can put a bunch of pidgeys in a town, sat on power lines or pecking at food scraps, in a way that would be weird if they were all charizards instead.

Bulbasaur is my favorite pokemon from generation one. Nobody else I knew picked him so it felt special.

Venomoth was supposed to be caterpie's evolution. They switched them because they wanted Ash's first catch to be a caterpie, but they thought butterfree would be more popular with the audience.
