Thorgi, you are essentially the last paramedic still doing chest compressions to keep Darkstalkers alive in the collective consciousness, and I salute you for it, even if Capcom never will.

Pyron does actual fit the theme of the series in a really subtle way I don’t see anyone talking about. In a game all about vampires, werewolves and other creatures of the night, the final boss is a living sun.

I adore Lilith. She's spunky and cute and loves life, and you can tell that she's having an absolute blast in all her animations. And even though it's never gotten fleshed out very well, I do really like her grim origin and the semi-tragic end to her story. You really feel for her just wanting to have a body of her own. Oh, and justice for flat-chested girls.

You gotta love the fact that the cute little red riding hood is the most psychotic fighter in the whole cast.

Jon Talbain has always been my most favorite character in this franchise and I wish he got a proper playable role in Capcom's Crossover titles.

One of my favorites aspects of BBHood is that she is the only pure human no supernatural and she is also the most evil of them all by a good margin.

Donovan is basically just Capcom's version of Alucard, and I'm here for it.

There must be a word for "I've heard this voice so much, that seeing the person for the first time feels unreal."

Talbain is my favorite, but his relationship with Felicia that really helps with that. He's the cynical to her optimist, and I like that the two of them frequently are paired up whenever we get Darkstalkers stuff like the comics. Him coming to give Kung Fu lessons to the orphans at the orphanage where Felicia works at the end of the Street Fighter vs. Darkstalkers comic is super adorable.

Jedah is the top of S tier for me. The fact that he chops off his own head and squirts blood at you as an attack always blew my mind. Jedah, Jon, Morigan, Lilith and Feilcia are top tier to me. Runner up is Qbee because she is one of my mains.

Idk how true this is, but apparently Morrigan single-handedly made succubi more popular in Japan.

I will just put it out there: a let's make a sequel for Darkstalkers would be entirely different to the build the roster due to how much more in depth it is and that you can pull from anywhere rather than canon

I think I just got seriously hooked on him after having watched all of his retrospectives multiple times for how good they all were with tons of info and especially all of his Build The Roster videos. I love how many Darkstalkers characters have sidekicks or companions. It's partly just Capcom's art department showing off, but it also really helps give these monstrous characters more depth. Anita, Cecil, Felicia's cat friends...even Victor and Bishamon have ghost buddies. Most of these characters represent not just an individual fighter, but a kingdom, village, army, or species. And all of the sidekicks onscreen make that more than just a line of lore.

Bishamon's desing gives me Gurren Lagann (or rather, Gaiking) vibes. When I saw your Darkstalkers retrospective for the first time, when you talked about Donovan, I finally got he was a Vampire Hunter D reference. I vibe with Midnight Bliss Victor. (Mainly the combination of Bowlcut and muscles with the jacket) I like Marionette's "tinker toy fairy" aesthetic. Morrigan, as such a pretty sucubus, as spoke person for Capcom, and a gamer, deserve her place in S-tier.

I got into Darkstalkers thanks to Project X Zone. The RPG that uses characters from Capcom, Sega, and Bandai Namco. So the Darkstalkers characters I knew before anyone else were Morrigan, Dimitri, Q Bee, Hsien Ko, Jedah, Raptor, and Filicia (Felicia was in the sequel). Since I love fighting games and monsters this game is perfect and I’m sad Capcom seems to have forgotten about creating a new game to give us more in terms of lore or story

Jon Talbain is always gonna be my favourite Darkstalker, probably my favourite video game character for that matter. Hsien Ko deserves S tier for the simple reason that if Morrigan put darkstalkers as a franchise on the pop culture consciense and has carried it for almost 30 years, Hsien Ko did the same for Jiang Shi, when you think Jiang Shi, you immediately think of Hsien Ko, whether you've played darkstalkers or not. not any Darkstalker characters can boast to be the primary example of a folklore monster like Hsien ko does

It's a testament to how well-designed these characters are, that there isn't a single stinker in the bunch. It's also a crime that Jon Talbain and Lord Raptor haven't been in a crossover game yet. But my de-facto favorite in pretty much every aspect is Felicia. Loveable personality, unambiguously heroic moral code, cute design, rushdown-leaning fighting style. What's not to love?

I enjoy hearing your opinions on all these characters and for me Morrigan hold a special place for me cause I did my first fireball by accident with her and it was the EX version so it left an impression on my 10 year old brain when I saw a flaming bat skull flying at Dimitri. Second is Anakaris because I just enjoy seeing that command grab those two thing made me love Darkstalker back in the day. If you looking for ideas on more Darkstalker content then maybe we could do a costume design session or make the next game since Capcom are cowards not doing it.

Morrigan is in pretty much any Capcom crossover, Felicia alongside Dmitri and Jedah were included in MvC3 I think Lei-Lei too... but Capcom make no sense. "We want you to show us Darkstalkers is still relevant. Sales must reach our target or goodbye." They then proceed to rerelease a version of PSX Vampire Savior... again. See we had Vampire Hunter that did well at home in Japan, then it had a remake oddly called Vampire Hunter 2: The Night Warriors. Night Warriors was insane and still popular today, so much so they continued with the most known of the series- Vampire Savior: Lord of Vampire affectionately called Vsav for short. PS1 and Sega Saturn each had a release that differed to the arcade in that Lei-Lei, Donovan, Huitzil and Phobos were all included. The PS1 went even further by not only including these but hidden fighters Shadow, Marrionette, Oboro Bishamon and Dark Gallon. It also included the Original Character mode and proper Time Attack where the Arcade just had basic Arcade and Versus. So, knowing Darkstalkers as the western version was called; was such a hit- Capcom made this decision. Let's rerelease Vsav PS1 on PSP, oh and include the Devil May Cry: Bloody Palace Mode. It had the Original Character just as one palette choice and unlocked portraits called The Chaos Tower and thus the first... and last; Darkstalkers Chronicles game released. So, all this aside; instead of a demo or teaser of an all new Darkstalkers game, Capcom thought; fuck that. eSports are huuuuge so let's just again rerelease Vsav oh but include Arcade Mode for both the prequel Night Warriors and first time give home players Vsav2 which made D, Donovan gone evil and Anita as playable. Darkstalkers: Resurrection was the result. So, what happened? Unsurprisingly, despite it's decent success; it failed shockingly to Capcom suits, to sell the target. Instead of saying they screwed up nope- Capcom said it was our fault the fans, not buying yet another rerelease of Vsav1 and that was when they abandoned the IP. I would love, sooo love; a new chapter of Darkstalkers but somehow- despite Morrigan, Felicia and Lei-Lei/ Hsien-ko's popularity particularly Morrigan: being so popular they show up in multiple projects like Pocket Fighter, Gunblade, MvC.... Capcom still refuse to bring back the franchise

I can't believe I have to say this in 2023 but Viktor is based on Frankenstein's monster, not Frankenstein. Frankenstein is the name of the doctor who created the monster, not the monster itself.

One thing love about Darkstalkers is that character is loaded with personality and creativity whichmakes me love them all which makes them more fun to play. But if i had to chose my favorites it has to Hisen-Ko, Lord Raptor, Felicia and the GOAT John Tailban (CAPCOM PLEASE BRING HIM BACK!)

This Darkstalkers tier list made me really want a new Darkstalkers game, but since that’s not happening the next best thing is a build a roster, but you already did a build a roster. That only leaves one thing, crossover build a roster. Darkstalkers vs Street fighter. Darkstalkers vs mortal kombat. Darkstalkers vs Killer instinct. I feel like you could do some kind of video about these Capcom compilation games that fail to satisfy what the community actually wants, there's something there.

*Do I Like this video?* Yes. *Do I understand the reasoning?* Yes. *Do I agree with the reasoning?* Not always. *Am I going to share my own Tier list?* Of course! (Read it in Raul-Julia-As-Bison-Voice) This is my _personal_ list, because I don't think I can be objective. Not just because of personal bias, but because I'd need a good way to sample the opinions of the "general fandom" to create an objective list. So I'm going based on how well I like the character concept, as well as its execution, both in terms of story and game mechanics. Order within a Tier indicates standing within that Tier. *I love all these characters,* so like Thorgi, the "worst" are solid C Tier characters, doing much more _right_ than _wrong._ *S Tier:* Morrigan, Demitri This kinda follows the _Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba_ approach to success; take something proven, follow the formula, but then _polish_ it until it shines! As concepts, we've got the vampire/succubus versions of Ryu and Ken from _Street Fighter_ *and yet* they've got so many differences in terms of gameplay I have to zoom out for that to be obvious e.g. Shoryuken-like move, Hadoken-like move, etc. Demitri's Midnight Bliss attack almost put him over the top. _Almost._ *A Tier:* Felicia, Lilith, Lord Raptor, Hsien-Ko, Jedah Dohma, Donovan Baine/Dee & Anita Please *remember* that this is all _relative_ to S Tier! Felicia is such a fun character, in just about all regards *but* even after decades of playing as her, something always feels "off" or maybe "missing". At least, _just enough_ to keep her from S Tier. Lilith lives in Morrigan's shadow, and that's probably intentional, but it also means she falls just shy of that same lofty height. I love so much about Lord Raptor _but_ yet again, something always feels _missing_ when I use him. He's also a bit more of a lightweight in terms of story significance, for better and worse. Hsien-Ko is sort of the inverse; I don't enjoy her game mechanics as much, but her story (at least pre-Darkstalkers 3) had some meat to it, and her tossed items had some fun Easter eggs. Jedah suffers from 90s edgelord syndrome. Listen, I enjoyed reading _Vampire: The Masquerade_ and other old _World of Darkness_ TTRPG sourcebooks as much as the next weeb, but *Jedah ought to have been a Shinigami or Grim Reaper* style creature. He's like 99% there already! That change, and he's not only in S Tier, he's threatening to outrank Morrigan! Well, once again his moves also feel just a bit incomplete or off compared to those top two. Lastly, just like with Thorgi, I lumped Donovan/Dee and adult Anita together; _individually_ and they'd rank lower. Donovan strikes me as too many different ideas crammed into one: dhampir, monster hunter, and elemental spirit-summoner! Until he officially becomes Dee, his Donovan-self would be C Tier on its own; good idea, good story, less-than-ideal execution. I never got to play as Anita or D, but they look like they'd bring it storywise; they'd probably still be B Tier on their own, maybe even still up here in A Tier. *B Tier:* Anakaris, Baby Bonnie Hood, Q-Bee, Pyron, Victor von Gerdenheim, Marionette, Shadow, Oboro Bishamon I love Anakaris story. I love his look and personality. He has some fascinating play mechanics... but I don't usually enjoy playing as him. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Baby Bonnie Hood, Q-Bee, and Pyron are all great concepts, but storywise they feel a bit lacking. *That may not be their fault.* B.B. Hood and Q-Bee didn't get any sequels for us to learn more about them, or for their gameplay to really evolve. They actually have a lot worked into their move sets, and they have some good moves at that... but it is like they have S Tier concepts that were cut off before they could grow. Pyron is the same but with far less of an excuse; he was the big boss early on and seems to mostly have returned so we could enjoy playing as him once again. Victor has so much heart I _want_ to throw him into S Tier, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I also enjoy his attacks and animations, but not enough to leave B Tier. If he has a good amount of story to him, and if he'd have gotten the Donovan treatment e.g. if the ghost of his creator (Professor Von Gerdenheim) and his sister Emily showed up in more of his moves and/or got to be playable bonus characters _a la_ Dee and Anita (not that Dee equates to the Professor storywise), he'd easily be in A Tier, if not S Tier. Marionette and Shadow are just cool-looking characters added to justify an All-Mirror-Matches-Mode and a Play-As-The-Character-You-Just-Beat-Mode. Maybe it is the mystery of knowing so little, but I love them! As with Thorgi, I think I might want Marionette to become her own character. As for Shadow, if he brought one or two bonus moves to the table with added animations, he too would skyrocket to the S Tier for me. Oboro Bishamon is great storywise, but as the video points out, it is Bishamon with some moves missing. Also, notice how Bishamon hasn't been listed yet. >.> I'd almost prefer Oboro was a totally separate "monk" character... but probably not. Basically, he's a good but not great character, but being the secret After Credits version of a regular character lets him sneak into the B Tier. *C Tier:* Huitzil, Rikuo, Sasquatch, Bishamon, Dark Jon Talbain, Jon Talbain The _short_ version is I love all these characters, and in a lesser fighting game, they could easily be the _best_ characters. Darkstalkers is just _that_ good that they're "average" instead! I may like their story and/or gameplay, but at the same time, something just doesn't quite work for me. Huitzul is _almost_ B Tier, and it is totally a "gut feeling" thing ranking him this low. If I hadn't thought about it, I'd assume I'd have him as B or even A Tier because I like robots, and I mostly liked how he played... I think. That might be part of it. I can't remember how much is him and how much is me misremembering moves from Iron Man or Sentinel in the Marvel/Vs series games. The same is true of Rikou, save I don't like "fish people" the way I like machines and... eh, that probably sounded weird but even I want to wrap this up, so the line stays! XD Sasquatch is more of the same _except_ with him, the way he plays isn't _quite_ how I'd like. _Close,_ but not quite there and with how much I like the whole cast, that results in C Tier. Bishamon, Dark Jon Talbain, and Jon Talbain suffer not just because of their gameplay and/or stories not quite hitting the mark, but because they make me want something _better_ I know we'll never get. If that sounds like nitpicking, *it is:* without such _minor_ things, everyone would be in S and A Rank! For evil haunted warrior armor, I think I'd have preferred something medieval. imagine something like the knight's armor during the period when you had some hard armor (like helmets and a breastplate) over chainmail. Now imagine the chainmail unraveling itself as part of some moves, in an almost Venom like fashion! ... Yeah, if that sounds stupid, no worries; that's why this is a _personal_ list. For both flavors of Jon Talbain, I'm glad he exists, but I wish regular Jon was more of a stance/transformation fighter. Let me get all _Bloody Roar_ and enjoy him as both "human" and "beastman"! Ideally, we'd have a human only hidden version to go along with Dark Talbain, who - if we're talking about my hypothetical scenario - would be the pure beastman variant. *Even sticking to who we have, why not call one version "Gallon" (or "Garon" or whatever it is supposed to be in the Japanese version)?* Yes, I'm weird and petty and thanks for reading. :)

I hate to say the "Um, actually" bit, but apparently "hose imasaki" on a youtube channel revealed that Lilith's Gloomy Puppet Show is actually a DDR minigame for the Lilith player to bump up the damage based on one of six randomly selected songs that are probably really common in Japan, but nowhere else. The title of the vid is "【ヴァンパイアセイヴァー】リリス『グルーミーパペットショウ』完全攻略【VSAV】" if you want to check it out yourself, but it IS in Japanese, so it might be hard to decipher much.
