Motorists distracted by cell phones is the new normal. As riders, we just have to accept it. My advise is to wear a high viz yellow/green jacket. You'll practically glow like you're radioactive on sunny days and drivers will definitely see you. It may not be your taste in fashion, but if it keeps you safe, it's worth it. Also, your helmet mic sounds fantastic.

Thank you for your comments on depression. It affects many people...really. Your response to it is commendable! You are out there, on the open road, tasting the air and off the bloody computer. Human beings need to be outside. We need to be moving around and having fun, in our free time...much like a child. Your thoughts on being totally engaged while riding are priceless. I never thought of a motorcycle being an anti-depressant, but it is, as you just described. Brilliant! Keep working your job too, my friend, with a positive attitude, and good things will come your way. Life is a long journey, and I can remember making $3 an hour way back in the day...but I always had bigger plans and dreams, and it's turned out well for me, with plenty of patience. Good luck to you. I can see you writing a book on depression and motorcycling. You have touched a chord there...

Hello, I just wanted to let you know I trully enjoyed your review of the 2019 Honda Rebel. I personally have driven a 2008 Honda Rebel 250 as my daily driver for over 10 years. I reallly loved your description of riding as "form of moving meditation" and how it forces you to be present while riding. I have always described riding as something that very much lets you know you are still alive as you feel your heart beating with each power down shift to avoid the dumb ass on the phone. While cruzing down the road on a motorcycle all your senses are engaged and fully present. This is natures way of keeping you alive while riding the thin line between total enlightenment or tragic road rash. Best of luck to you and your loved ones as we all are cruzing through life just hoping to find our own form of personal moving meditation that changes out lives forever.

thanks marcus! a thought that came into my mind while riding yesterday is that when you're riding, it's like everything and nothing matters at the same time - the machine is an extension of your body that you're operating in a flow state, yet there's nothing separating or protecting you from the elements except your gear. high stakes and an empty mind.

Hearing you talk about your struggles was incredibly relatable. I used to ride in India and it was always so therapeutic, sensory and visceral. It's been a lot of years since then, I'm now in Canada, feeling like I'd never have a career after 6 years of study. I haven't wanted to get a car, and sort of just accepted the overcrowded public transport as my way of life. But perhaps my life isn't really moving, because I'm not really moving. Riding and becoming independent again would change a lot. I havn't seen a better review on this bike, you've totally sold me on this bike (and some of the accessories), I'd going to visit a showroom to test one out :) ! I love that it's got an upright stance on a cruiser! The ones that have the legs stretched out to the front makes me feel less in control during sharp turns.

This is an amazing video on so many levels. The fact is, motorcycling in its most pure form is a spiritual event. When you spoke of meditation, it fit right in with the motorcycling experience. This is a great bike for beginners but advanced riders too because of the benefits of a good handling, light and responsive machine. You're awesome!! Thanks for a great video experience!

Nice vid. I'm actually an old biker who fancies 2 wheels again. What you said at the end about being in the present was spot on. I used to love that buzz of high focus. I'd ride without a thought in my head, just absorbed in the now. I was a bike messenger back in the 80s, riding through London as fast as I could get away with. I'd often do 70 and more along the Embankment. (By the Thames) LOL, I'd get locked up these days. Envy your weather, perfect for bikes I'd say. Stay lucky and positive.

Couldn't agree more brotha. The world needs more self-awareness and less knee-jerk reactions. Things in the first world have gotten so easy and convenient that many seem to be addicted to distraction and low-quality stimuli. Meditation can be difficult at times, but I find that it brings me a greater appreciation for what is in my control.

I like your philosophical bent on this. Something that I'd like to share as my own experience on two & four wheels. I'm not currently riding...looking to get another bike again, though. Miss it too much. But, driving a standard car is like watching tv. You're in a room, and what's going on around is just what's in that pane of glass. A convertible feels like going to the movies, or perhaps a better analogy is live theater. It's wider, broader, more expansive and involves more of the senses. I used to have a miata, and I felt like i was in the front row on Broadway! Really see more about the stage, the scenery the actors, their expressions etc. Riding a motorcycle is like moving up on stage. Now, you're part of the scene, part of the action. You're not watching the show, you are part of the plot. A very different feel and experience. I hope those dark days are a long distant memory for you. Likewise, I've been through some dark times. Hope you continue to get peace and comfort from all the right places. Hope, comfort, peace, restoration and a bunch of other things are out there. My journey has led me to some very specific answers. [not here to preach, but, I take the accusation of "Jesus freak" as a compliment.] :-) Anyway, glad I stumbled across your video - and, hope to meet you "on stage" one of these days. Ride safe! Keep the shiny bits pointing up!

I remember when a 350 or 500cc bike was plenty fast for normal riding. Now it seems that people are seeing them as a beginner bike. You can easily get enough speed on a 500cc bike and ride on the freeway. It's a Honda and is made to rev and the engine won't blow up because it's running faster. It's fun to ride and it's fast enough to get you in trouble too!

Good video. The very low first gear, and the busy-ness at higher speeds can both be addressed by adding a couple of teeth to the rear sprocket. I heard of this solution while researching the CB500X. Apparently it works quite well. If you plan on a longer road trip, I think it would make a big difference. BTW, the motor is coming alive rather than straining - it has Honda's racing technology built into it, and it'll run forever at high RPM's. You didn't mention how you liked the seat. I guess you like it bc everybody complains about the stock seat, and you weren't complaining. Meditation is so important for us to do, and there is a direct connection between meditation, happiness, and motorcycle riding in that they both bring you into the present moment where life, reality, and joy all actually take place. There is a saying that you don't ever see motorcycles parked outside of therapists offices. I know that however I am feeling at the beginning of a ride, I feel endorphin rushes during the ride, and I feel great by the end of the ride. Cheers!

You mean subtracting a couple teeth from the rear sprocket, adding teeth will raise the rpm's.

@@ss_whole yes, you're quite right. the low end acceleration will suffer, but i've heard that it's all but unnoticeable, whereas you really notice it on the highway. probably more important for the CBX 500 than with the rebel, but still it expands the bike's utility imo. keep up the good work!

A little vibration at highway speeds can be smoothed out with a little carb or injector cleaner in the gas every month or so. Try it.

I've been riding my rebel for almost a year. Just hit 3000 miles. Usually, 1st gear is 0-12, 2nd is 12-about25, 3rd is 25-40, 4th 40-55, 5th is 55-65, 6th is everything else I absolutely love this bike, best beginner street bike I could have ever found Also, great vid. You got yourself a new sub

it can get there, but it's definitely revving out at that point. 70-75 is fine, anything above that is pushing it.

The more I ride small displacement bikes the more I enjoy them. I have 7 bikes that range from and R3 to a Indian Chieftain. My R3 is the most fun of all of them and the smallest displacement. The thing about the R3 that I really am appreciative of is that it has 6 gears. I have a Yamaha bolt and Triumph Thruxton that are 5 speed and everyone can say you don't need a 6th gear and they are right. But, if you don't want to be buzzed to death on the highway an long rides it is a luxury to have.

Wow. I am looking at getting into biking to help with the exact thing you mention at the end! I am there. The connection and awareness lacking from mundane driving and life. This motor loves to rev it comes from the cb500r max tourque is at 7000rpm peak HP at 8500 and the limiter is right there at 8500 and she bounces. If you can handle the vibrations 3-4k rpm is cruising and use more from there. Rev limiter of each gear 1 - 36.2 mph 2 - 56.5 mph 3 - 74.3 mph 4 - 91.5 mph 5 - 103.4 mph 6 - 114 mph At 70 on the highway in 6th I believe is 4-5k so that is what you would aim for in the rest of the gears

If you don't like the buzzy sound at 70 all you have to do is change sprocket size. You could go 1 or 2 teeth more on the front sprocket or you could go 3 or 4 teeth less on the back sprocket or do both for a big change. Then you will be able to ride at 70 or maybe more at less RPM and will have a relaxed highway ride. That's the great thing about chain drive. Are their downsides? It will accelerate just a tad slower but it won't be noticeable in normal day to day riding.

Man, if you're worried by a few vibrations ... try Bikes like the Royal Enfield Classic 500's ... those are thumpers ... vibrations through hands as well as every other part of your body. That's how old school motorcycles felt, reminding you that you're sitting on top of an engine! Maybe look at your seat also ... could be resolved.

I guess I like being present even when I drive my car. I hate talking on the phone while driving, plus it's a manual. Not that you can't use hands free but I really don't like being distracted with a phone call while driving, it actually feels a little unsafe. More than that I just enjoy the alone time and listening to music and thinking while driving. I zone out sometimes of course but even so I'm probably a lot more tuned into whats going on around me and with the car than anyone who's on the phone while driving.

Great video. Lovely use of cameras and music top & tail. Excellent voiceover. You sound like Brad Pitt. Flathead has just purchased a 2019 model and has been searching for someone who has completed such a review. He got the same screen (excellent), waiting for other gear from Thailand. He fitted an 8 inch handlebar, (from Thailand), and the nut to one cable for the throttle housing was too long - caused all sorts of frustration. Also, the rubber grommets that are between the triple clamp and the handlebar make for dangerous steering. He is going to get a stainless or alloy piece specially made to replace the rubber mounts. Otherwise the upgrades change the bike a little and he agrees with you a sissy bar is a necessity. Oh, he likes the small bag up front. Well done and stay positive, as comic and actor Robin Williams said in a movie - "Life is fleeting".
