It goes a lot further than that though, they believe there is limited space and that people with antiamerican views are being brought here specifically to change America. They're wrong, but it's a lot more than just not wanting to be treated "like a minority" Many of the most racist believe minorities are treated fairly, and that black people just deserve the outcomes they receive from the police for being worse people. There's a whole culture beyond this that needs to be changed

Their fear of the Native American people, allowed for the federal government and churches to condone boarding schools. Their fear allowed for "treaties" and force, to be used to steal land and resources from the Native American people. Their fear allowed for an entire race to be enslaved to establish their wealth and economy. Their fear has frozen the progress of a nation, that should be light years ahead of it's time. Their fear allows them to use their bibles and guns to eradicate that fear at all costs. Their fear has cut short so many lives and potential. Their fear of everything different, is the poison that continues to plague this nation!

I discovered systemic racism when I was young and lived in LA. I worked with an investigative journalist from Jamaica who's name was also Lee. I did the photography and proof read the articles before our work went to the paper and he gave his opinion on my choice of photos before they were to the papers in the area. Lee didn't drive so we took my car. You wouldn't believe the number of times we got stopped by racist cops and accused of any number of things including being a hooker and John just because I was a white woman and he was a black man. Other times we were harassed as a bi-racial couple. This occured so many times I stopped counting the number of stops. The accusations occurred in spite of our press passes and my camera equipment. It was born disgusting and demeaning for both of us. He apologized to me once because his darker skin caused me to suffer harassment and it upset me badly for him to feel that way. I told him that it was entirely the fault of racist whites. We became close friends in spite of the harassment and hung out together after work often along with mutual friends. None of us whatever the color of any of our skin allowed our good time to be spoiled. We were so young and joyful back then nothing and no one was going to spoil our good time. The memory of the racism stuck with me for a lifetime though. To this day racism infuriates me.

I'm glad you said that. You worded it masterfully and it really compelled me to think and reflect. I beg your pardon, in advance, if this is wordy... There are times in a person's life that one must very simply but honestly call it as you see it, in truth. And above all else recognize and reject denial because it's a frequently used utility and not a good one at that. Here's an analogy I often use. It's like the typical sports fan who insists their favorite team will win a world championship every year even though that very team is a last place team...the better fan is the informed fan who can freely and openly admit that their team is terrible and won't win until they make huge improvements. Denial is a powerful thing. It has more masks than a Halloween costume factory. These masks can be worn to serve all sorts of self-destructive purposes that can hurt a community. Your comment is an acknowledgment to an acknowledgment and even though that statement sounds a bit redundant from me, it's that sort of response that will bring all of us together as a single species of humans whose only purpose is to embrace, with the better angels of our nature, that single thing which empowers us all, if we embrace it...it's called Empathy. And it's from Empathy that the very best of ourselves becomes evident to everyone, and everywhere.

When I was at Texas Christian University I had a sociology course where the professor (an Asian American male) defined "White Privilege" as not having more advantages in life, rather having fewer disadvantages/discriminations in life (so opposite of what it sounds like). Essentially, in our country's history, Caucasians (with few exceptions) have not faced the multiple generations oppression that most People Of Color (particularly African Americans) have faced, resulting in fewer disadvantages for them today. Sure, if you're a wealthy Caucasian, you are better off than all average/poor people in the U.S., but if you're a middle class Caucasian, you still have better chances to succeed in life because you don't have the systemic disadvantages that African, Asian, Hispanic, & Native Americans at a similar social class level have. Finally, when a non Caucasian does become successful in the U.S., it isn't because of "Reverse Discrimination" as some Caucasians argue, rather it's because they have managed to overcome the disadvantages that they faced that many of their Caucasian counterparts didn't have to face.

This bears repeating! I'm an American Caucasian male; I've never had my resume passed over because of a "foreign" name, I don't need to worry about a cop pulling me over, seeing my face and deciding I'm more likely to have drugs in my vehicle, doctors don't look at me and think I'm lying if I say I don't drink or smoke, and if I walk into a store wearing dirty ratted clothes, people just assume I've been doing manual labor. The thing is, none of this should be the case; we waste so much time and effort because of systematic racism.

My clothes are, in many cases literally, the same as they were, but I no longer get extra attention from security. It's like I've always looked like a problem, but now I look like management's problem. I still get the nervous reflex, but cops aren't interested anymore (unless I'm in my truck, it looks like it should be condemned). What I find more interesting is the coos' utter lack of interest in the smoking, double flag toting, belligerent bumper sticker covered pickups for whom speed limits and lane markers are offensive suggestions. Sweaty hostiles make me jumpy, but police hereabouts can't even see them (til they go do a domestic violence standoff at their place).

We have to do a crapton more than push love kindness and acceptance. Obvious hate is only part of the equation, and in the grand scheme of things, the least part. We ( and by we, I mean white people in general) have over centuries built systems that intentionally favor ourselves over other ethnicities. and cultures. This has been going on way before America. What we have to do is dismantle those power structures and systems that favor us and suppress those who are different. That also means that we need to deal with the ramifications of the fact that those systems have been in place for centuries. Part of what that means is that even if we erased systemic racism today, things are still not equal. that is because those racist systems have impacted opportunity, education, generational wealth, and social networks and cultural participation to the extent that " leveling the playing field" will take decades of targeted effort, educationally, economic, and socially. In short, we are going to need to give a lot of preferential treatment to people of color. This will involve " reparations" ( a term i personally despise, since it is less about what was done to specific people and more about making up for artificial suppression) This is going to look and feel very wrong to a lot of white people. It is going to seem racist. White people will fall behind in a lot of indicators because the systems in place carved out too much space for us at the expense of others. White people are going to need to do a lot of things against their best interests for a long time so that we can end up at a level playing field. This is not their problem to solve, and they do not have the systemic power to correct it. It is going to be rough and painful for us, and we are not used to that as a ethnic culture. But we have to do it. Not just because it is the right thing to do, but also because if we want our culture to survive, we need to ensure that it benefits all Americans equally. Failure to do that will result in those who are underserved to find an alternative that better meets their needs.

I'm an Irish immigrant who was raised Roman Catholic. My family moved to the US when I was very young. It blew my mind when I saw five churches, each belonging to a different Christian denomination, all within a mile of each other near the center of our new small town, and no barbed wire. I immediately thought "This place is great! America is so much better!" Then while I was still a young boy, while we were headed home from church, driving through that same town center, I witnessed a KKK demonstration for the first time. Everywhere you go the "Haves" will always find a way to make some other people the "Have Nots". They tried real hard to make me afraid, but I already knew what that was like. When you choose not to give in to prejudice you find faith that there are others who share that belief no matter how different you are, and the fear goes away.

Conservatives admitting systematic racism? This should be a good one. Edit: I should’ve known they wouldn’t address this directly, however, it is very interesting to note how the Replacement Theory basically does acknowledge systemic racism. As a black person, it’s pretty funny to me that some white people would fear a racist system against them. I can only speak for me, but I’m pretty sure many black people feel this way. I was fortunate to have been raised by a grandmother that never had much in the way of money and property. She had been raised by her grandmother; her mother died when she was 2 and her father remarried and did not want the baggage of his first wife's child. Grandma knew what it felt like to be seen as "less than". She was a young woman of German heritage living in the US during WWII which filled her with fear and shame. Instead of becoming bitter about her situation, she accepted her situation as her starting point and simply treated others as she wished she had been treated. She showed me how to be appreciative in all situations and to make the best of everything. She taught me that different is not bad, it is different. She was never wealthy but was far richer than anyone I have ever met and I appreciate the lessons she taught me.

If it becomes true, would we white folks like being treated that way. No we would not. We need to start treating people how we would like to be treated. The alternative won't be pretty if we continue down this path of fear and anger. This isn't a problem for your children and grandchildren to solve. It's ours. But in the future, judges won't be allowed to throw out felonies in murder trials like that judge did for Kyle Rittenhouse regarding his felony of buying a gun that WI had ruled "adults only" and then brandishing it at a protest. I am a white guy and so many problems are rooted in fictional issues believed by people of a similar background to me, that are now spilling over and affecting other groups in the real world, much to my horror and dismay. Whether it's white replacement theory, the whole anti-trans and critical race theory in school drama, or any other conservative/right-wing messaging motivating their base, the root behind all of it is fear. The problem with countering that kind of messaging is fear isn't rational, it's emotional. Once you get people to the point where they're already afraid, any facts you can present, rational arguments you can make, moral or ethical flaws you can point out are irrelevant. As long as they continue to get a steady diet of fear and hate mongering, they are now part of a frightened herd that's easily led and manipulated by the people stoking those fears. The sad truth is that the portion of America's white population buying into this nonsense is probably a lost cause. I've seen it in my own friends and family. Hope for change lies with the generations to come and getting to them and educating them to know better before they are exposed to the same fear-mongering and become afraid too. Beyond that, all we can do is try to make it so that there is a cost to pay for the people stoking these fears. If Fox News and other right-wing outlets and the social media that magnifies their messaging stand to lose money, they may change their behavior but until then they're going to keep driving the same business models. The politicians getting contributions and votes because people are afraid will keep on at least cosigning on these conspiracy theories, if not actively promoting the fear mongering themselves. Likewise, as long as industries that want deregulation and tax breaks can get those things passed as long as the conservative voters are riled up about other issues too, dark money funding the political action groups stoking these fears will keep pouring in as well.

That's the great dilemma we're facing, this sad nostalgia for something that truly never existed, this hideous desire to reverse all the hard fought progress in the belief that if we could just go back to the past, everything would magically go back to some more innocent time. But as most of us understand, that's truly naive because the past was no bed of roses for many in our culture. Those who support the radical right authoritarian movement are in many ways pitiable and sad because they seem to be operating largely out of fear, and their "leaders" are just clever enough to take advantage of their ignorance, and use their fear for their gain. As Beau stated, it's hard to believe that anyone at fox noise or indeed many within the power structure of the repugnican party truly believe the noxious crap they peddle, and yet here we are. People are literally dying at the hands of disturbed individuals who have been fed crap. Education is our only real hope, but now we see them attempting to squelch any constructive dialog about the racism embedded in our history and in the fabric of our nation. The temptation toward hopelessness is strong. It certainly feels like fear and ignorance is winning.

The identitarian beliefs on the left are just as much a problem of honesty as on the right, just luckily not causing the same kinds of real-world problems as on the right. I could see it happening though. Blackshirts and Brownshirts both came into existence as responses to growing violence on the Left, an the Left in the US now is definitely fed up with this shit. I can definitely see some black supremacist, of which there aren't many but they DO exist, opening fire on some super conservative white crowd. I'd argue there's a third fear mixed in with those, or maybe it's a branch of one of the two Beau described: a fear of looking in the mirror. That if they were to acknowledge systemic racism and their place in it, they're a bad person. It's why so many of them say things like "the worst thing you can call someone these days is 'racist.'" Another commenter here said that a reason people believe "that theory" is because privately they believe they are in a position they don't deserve, and I think this is a similar way of thinking. They want to be considered good people by default, and that benefitting from systemic racism makes them bad by default, but this is a false dichotomy. The people suffering under systemic racism DON'T CARE what the state of an individual's soul is, they just want the suffering to STOP.

@@jackrabbit11 Indeed. I've said before on other videos of Beau's that a big problem of the right-wing mindset is it's very shallow and superficial: as long as things LOOK good and pure on the surface, it IS good and pure. If there's things going on behind closed doors or under the surface, they occupy a kind of double-thinky space where they both don't exist and are trials to overcome in secret, in a kind of "fake it till you make it" way. That's why they're so big on reparative tortu...sorry "conversion therapy"...If a person is made to act straight long enough, they believe that person IS straight. It's why they advocate punishing homelessness rather than fixing it: if there are no homeless people visible on the street, then they don't exist. It's all about maintaining that illusion at the expense of all others, forcing the world to continue to play pretend with them for their own peace of mind.

Fox News comes standard on the most basic of packages, therefore everybody who gets cable from that company gets it, often at a tier where channels like CNN or MSNBC would cost extra. Not to shill for the other channels, but when the propaganda is free and the news is not, people will consume the free stuff. And the cable companies pay Fox News a "subscriber fee" for every customer who has access to their channel whether they watch it or not, whether there are advertisers there or not. Cutting your cable deprives Fox News of that money from you.

As a woman of color, I take hope in the fact that the murderer is being prosecuted. In my lifetime it was still proverbial to say that "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" and people were still holding up perpetrators of massacres against us as heroes,. Black people my age can remember when lynch mobs would include the upstanding pillars of the community, and vigilantes would photograph their smiling children posing next to hanged Black men, and that photo would never wind up in court because the sheriff and the judge were in on it. Most of the descendants of the Indian-fighters and the lynch mobs now find this horrifying. We can't give up now--God knows how much still needs done! Massacres still happen--but now at least they're prosecuted. Now at least nobody wants to publicly shake the hand of a murderer. Nobody with any standing is proud of what he did--even those who fueled the hatred in the first place now want to distance themselves. I'm saying this because if we can make this much progress, listen carefully, we can make more! It sucks that we can't do it all in one generation. It took generations to end legal slavery and more generations to erode unofficial slavery. It took generations for Native people just to get the right to vote, and only last year did we get the full legal right to prosecute a murderer who invaded a reservation to commit his crime. At my age I know that I won't live to see an end to racism itself--but I know it's coming. We've worked too hard to get this far to not go all the way. Younger people will pick up where we leave off--they always do. And more and more White people are getting on board, saying, "The advantages aren't worth what this twists up in my soul!" We get bloody setbacks. It's a battlefield for the soul of America, and the carnage isn't limited to warriors. Progress is jagged and raw. That's what courage is for. And that's what faith is for. You cry, you mourn, and then you march on, doing what's right, and opening your arms to more and more of those also committed to doing what's right. You don't let the murderers become your teachers, you stay better than them, but you march on. And you pray till your knees hurt and then you pray some more, that God sends more strength to everyone on the side of justice, and more allies choosing justice. Somewhere in America there are people right this minute deciding to step over to the side of justice!

I was born and raised, and have lived over half my life in E Africa. For school or work, I have also spent a total of 30 years in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, SA, and HK. The only place I experienced blatant racism was in the US. There is racism everywhere - white/black, black/black, Asian/black, Asian/white, even white/white, but nowhere did I see it on a daily basis, except in the US. I think it is partly because your country have no remaining historical ethnic mores, so everyone is nervous of loosing what each group views as its historical culture.

I feel for your questioner for this video. I listened in 2007 from my cubicle at work (pre-YT and when it was next-to-impossible to stream any kind of news channel at all) when a mentally disturbed young man walked into Norris Hall at Virginia Tech and murdered friends and professors of mine. I was done with all the "thoughts and prayers" horse manure then. I get the hurt and the anger he feels. And it is only made so so much worse by the longterm effects of systemic racism and the people of my race who are terrified of being "replaced". By the way...they WILL be replaced. They just can't handle that fact. Be it by the demographics changing or simple, final death, they will lose the position they have now. They can either make peace and learn to live in a new world...or they will rail against it. They chose....poorly.

I am reminded of an interesting concept from my philosophy class: The Blind Architect. The idea was that the only way to design a truly just society is for the person designing the society to have no idea where in that society where they would belong. Thus the designer would be motivated to make sure every single role in it is just, lest they end up in one of the 'bad' roles. It's always a bit of enjoyable schadenfreude when you see privileged people fall to opposite side of that privilege and begin shrieking about the unfairness of the situation they were so content with before.

I grew up in Buffalo and still live here. What happened is tragic. I know someone who lost a family member in this shooting... I'm a 28 year old white guy with a lot of friends of many different races and ethnicity's. The woman I call my step mom cause she looks out for me is African American. We help out around the community, me through my political activism and clean up efforts across the poorer areas of Buffalo and her with her bright personality and can do attitude. We love our community no matter the race or ethnicity. We'll pull through like we always do. On a brighter note I just want to say I am so happy to see we have people from California and Puerto Rico moving here. I've gotten to meet so many new faces and am so glad to see them enjoying our little slice of heaven here on the lake front. I hope some day more of you will come and join us here in our beautiful city. We're on the rise again and we'll keep fighting the good fight cause we are the city of good neighbors. I as well as many others will keep fighting to protect and support our communities of color in our city because they help shape what is Buffalo. Much love to you all in this dark time.

I'm a fellow Buffalonian and we're a resiliant bunch. We endure our weather, which isn't that bad as people think it is; economic turndown for a long time; population loss; mediocre, but beloved, sports franchises and more. We know what makes our town good and the bad as well, but we're trying. One little thing that made my people relieved, yet more angry at this was that the little shit who did this wasn't from Buffalo. Not that I'm blaming his home area for this.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's James Burke had his Connections series. In it, he went on and on about how the microchip will start/help the internet, and with that, more will have access to more information, and with that, show folks people are not that different, and with that less bigotry. At the time I thought nice pipe dream. For the most part bigotry, isn't driven by ignorance, it's fear and anger. And not fear/anger at the unknown, it's of losing. And then there's the flip side those that see the benefit of bigotry, when they are on the winning side. Those aren't really the same thing. It's like the confederate south, slave owners like the racism because it gave them a reason to not only treat blacks like cattle, but also mistreat their fellow poor whites. The reverse was, poor whites were mad at black slaves for keeping their wages low, and as a symbol of their low status compared to other whites. In a system where money is king, there really isn't an effective way to combat bigotry, somebody will always have to be "othered," there will always be a need to scapegoat "those people" for why your life didn't turn out the way you dream. Not saying that everybody will do that, but as we can see enough always will.

The poor white men of the South, if they opened their eyes, would see that the plantation owners were keeping them down, not the possibility of a black man earning a wage. But, for most of them, they would rather risk catching a cannonball between the eyes on behalf of their "betters" than dare think for themselves. The ancient empires played used this gambit very purposefully. Conquer a people. Enslave them and move them into a new area. The locals will view the newcomers as threat to their position, and will actively police the slave caste to keep them in their place. The slaves themselves are caught in a bind, as being eternally the threatening Foreigners with no hope of escaping home.

Isn't racism as old as human culture? Slavery and subjugation of the other has been practiced by almost every organized culture throughout human cultural development. How to counter and effectively eliminate racism is an old conundrum. Racism in America has always existed. Heaven help us, but it is a terrible problem about which there is no easy answer. Person by person we must repudiate each violent, or even subtle act inspired by racist people. I truly wish that I could live long enough for whites to become a minority in this country. I would celebrate the change and pray that all the cruelty and injustice caused by racist people would finally come to an end. Unfortunately, I doubt I will see that in my lifetime.

When "protesters" were hanging burning effigies of Obama in 2008, and the police showed up to protect the "protesters", I knew there can be no peaceful reduction in systemic racism. That wasn't the first time I have seen systemic racism, but it's the first time I've seen it so publicly shown and explicitly protected by the system. So I moved out of the US. Maybe I will move back once the problem is solved, but paying lower taxes and getting universal healthcare, I don't see much of a reason to move back.
