Today I take a look at the Strapping Young Lad Complete Works boxset and a look at a bunch of Devin solo records. There's so much to dig into here and it's still far from complete.

When I lived in Vancouver (1989-2014) a friend of mine owned a record store (that I worked at part-time) that sold nothing else but metal. He had Devin in on several occasions to do record signings & he was so accommodating & friendly with his fans. Just an awesome all around cool guy.

I’ve heard these kind of meetings with Devin echoed so many times. It shows how lucky we are to have him. Insanely talented, brilliant albums and a top dude.

I discovered him in 98 with the Infinity album and it was a game changer in my life. He's his own genre and has created just an incredible and vast world of sound and music. It's really difficult to imagine a time in my life where he wasn't around and I truly enjoy watching people discover him for the first time and journey through his massive catalog of albums. Always interested in what new listeners like/dislike about him!

It’s been a long journey with Dev and has never not been interesting. It took me til the year 2000 to “get” it but these last 24 years have been an exciting ride, that’s for sure. I’m always excited to see what he’s got coming next.

DAAAMOOOO!!!! Long time since Ive run into u online. This vid popped up in my feed simply because I'm a huge Dev-head. I saw him in July and he was spectacular. We drove most of 2 days to see him! Take care, man!!!

Devin is that rare genius, there really just is something about his work that is simply different from almost all the rest (and yes, I know everyone says that about their favorite musicians but obviously in this case it is very factual and totally the exception!).

Absolutely! He’s just something else and it’s all awesome.

Man I love Devin's work. I remember I was really into gateway metal for want of a better term, like Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Fear Factory etc and had just started getting into when I saw the video for "SYL" on Rage one night, around '97 and it just hit me like a truck. The perfect band for my 15 year old ADHD brain. I got right into them, saw them for the first time in September 2001 and over the years saw him every time he came here until the last tour and I've loved everything he's done, Strapping, all the solo stuff especially Ocean Machine, all the Project stuff and the By A Thread live shows in 2011 which IMO are fucking perfect, I love all of his work, I am an uber fan. But parts of "Transcendence" and definitely "Empath" and "Lightwork", it just didn't click for me, it was just a bit too clean and a bit too polished for my tastes. I kept waiting for the bit where he'd just explode in energy and it felt like it never really came on those records. Still a massive fan of the man and his work, plus live he's an absolute monster on stage, just after all these years the last few records haven't grabbed me, y'know? Oh and my fave Devin tune will always be "Far Beyond Metal", I always saw so many parallels between Devin and Dave Brockie so them on the same track always makes me smile and it's such a stupid, fun song.

Personally for me, I have found gold on every record but some of them didn’t grab me right away but then I was in a different mood and then BOOM! It hit me and it clicked and I was like “holy moly, this is one of his best songs ever!” Certain songs hit me at different times. It’s wild. And that’s the beauty of his work… it affects different emotions, moods, etc in such a big way that it can totally flip you one way or the other. I love that connection with his music. Like when I first hear Strapping I was like “nah this isn’t for me” but then his music just hit me, you know? Different time, different place. It’s pretty amazing. Huge fan.

Material is such a great song. For me, it was an instant fave from a, sadly weak (production-wise at least), Physicist. There's always that one song that unexpectedly draws you in, despite not even being one of the more popular ones in their catalogue.

That bridge in Material is just divine. What an amazing break. It’s definitely Wildhearts inspired. I’m glad that’s what got to be a Devin fan.

I wish I enjoyed Devin's music more because I also think he's a genius and a really nice guy, but unfortunately I'm yet to really connect with any of his music. I'm always watching his interviews and then trying but it never really clicks. 🙁

Well truth is, you can’t like everything. Some bands it just won’t work with. I have still yet to ever connect with tracksuit metal. Just can’t seem to get there. So it happens to all of us with something. The most important thing is at least you have given it a shot.
