I too like to spend time scrap sorting when I don't want to sew. I actually decided to make a quilt or two to use some scraps up. Big mistake of course but my sorting, cutting and saving helped speed up the quilt top making process. I just have more scraps to use !

Scrap quilts do produce more scraps which can be frustrating. Have scraps sorted for sure makes It easier to create a scrappy quilt or project. I’ve seen some quilters that make a quilt and then immediately use those scraps to make other projects like table runners or tote bags. Then those scraps become zipper pouches. Or any project that uses those scraps. I’m definitely not dedicated enough to immediately use up all scraps from a quilt project.

To me sorting fabric is fun. It's like Christmas. Exciting to see what is hidden in the bunch. Sorting is easy after you have decided on sizes, color, etc. Love this tutorial. I liked the idea of putting the person's name and dedicating a project to them.

I take a handful of scraps and iron them as I iron my sewing. The ironed pile is then ready for cutting when I’m watching tv - I cut 10’” squares, 5” down to 1.5” strips length of fabric, a small template and bow tie blocks. Happy sewing.

Definitely more relaxing to watch someone else sort scraps. I think that over time we tend to change how or what we sew which means we then have to tweak our storage system. It’s too frustrating to use a system that doesn’t work.

That was how I used to do It. Well I used a couple of desk drawers. They were so stuffed full of scraps that when I opened a drawer there was a scrap explosion 🤪. Having your scraps organized in a way that works for your style of scrappiness really does make It easier to get more done in less time.

I had a time sorting my scraps. I sorted by small and large one. I sewed my first scrap piece and sorting and sewing took me one hour. In the future I shall sew my large scraps together. That would save me some times. I see that is what you did. Thank you.

I recently found three Ziploc bags from when I first started specifically saving scraps for future projects. I had made several holiday aprons for family. My labels on the bags are: Scraps (fairly large and could be cut to squares, triangles, strips, etc.), Crumbs (much smaller), and Threads & Shreds (future stuffing). Almost a year and a half later, I still think of scraps the same way but have started separating strips of specific widths as well.

I gave up micro-sorting due to my OCD & opted for one medium sized clear tote. It’s a mess! Right now I’m saving for both crumb & strip projects & by only keeping those separated I feel less tense. When I am ready to actually start these projects...we’ll see!😂

Beth from My sewing room made a scrap quilt from little and big strips, cutting them to 6 or 6 1/2 inch wide, and as long as she wanted for the length of the quilt. Then she put a strip of white, and then another strip of pieces. I think it was for a baby quilt. Very cute.

Figuring out your categories is the hardest part. I had so many scraps left over from masks this summer. For me, I sort strips by color not size. All other small scraps go in a crumb bin. Larger scraps are cut into squares for quilting. I have 3 different scrappy blocks that I make each day before my "have to" kind of work (fun really). Those blocks grow fast & soon will have enough for a nice throw from each style of block I'm making.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the hardest part is deciding how you want to sort or cut your scraps. It’s different for everyone. What works for me may not work for someone else. Mask making has created a lot of scraps for everyone.

been trying to do this as I go through scraps from Christmas sewing....it is overwhelming for more than 15 min periods. I wonder if there is a therapist for quilters only.....

I completely understand. I still pull scraps out of the trash. It’s hard to throw away fabric which is money. I’ve narrowed down what I enjoy making and what I actually make. Iv wallowed myself to save very narrow strings for a far in the future scrappy project. Everything else goes in the trash. Saving scraps that we won’t use takes up physical and mental space. I still have plenty and plenty of scraps to play with so I feel better when I throw away the smallest scraps. I don’t enjoy sewing with tiny scraps so thankfully I can at least throw those away. You’re not the only one struggling. We all do. Good luck with your sorting.

Scraps can be overwhelming. I find scrappy projects I want to make and cut my scraps to those sizes. (I like projects that use 2.5” strips, 10”squares, and strings). Otherwise, I tend to not use them. My problem is I find all kinds of inspiration and ideas for new projects that I don’t go back to my UFOs that aren’t super exciting. Thank you for this fun video.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 17 күн бұрын
I completely understand. I have a bin full of various UFOs because the shiny new fun project side tracked me. I’m trying to go back and finish at least one project a week. Since this video I’ve learned that I used 1.5” squares and strips a lot in my projects. I now have a dollar tree bin where I keep rainbow 1.5” strips and baskets for each color. I still haven’t figured out my novelty scraps other than a basket and then I have to dig through It. Those I should probably cut into squares and rectangles. Happy scrappy sewing!!
