We’re getting ready to have a Buck wood heater installed in our very old house. I’ve always been afraid of a fire, so this was a big decision for us. The first thing that everyone has told me to do is to discuss it with my insurance company. That’s like telling me to go to the dentist. I was pleasantly surprised. When I told my agent that I was having it professionally installed by the dealership, he was very supportive. It’s just too big of a risk to DIY unless you know what you’re doing. I’ll sleep better. Excellent video!!

Burn a hot fire (high flue temps) or buy a catalytic stove, which eliminates smoke, even when the flue temps are low. Even with a catalytic stove, I have heard its suggested to burn one hot fire per day.

It's so important to have a pro like this fellow do these types of jobs, rather than a DIYer or handyman. You want to get this done right, with the right materials!

Honestly that's not even a guarantee. We bought a old house with a wood stove installed in a hearth with a liner running up the chimney. Inspections revealed a few issues: 1) The chimney was only 2ft tall. State code, NFPA 211 standard and stove manufacturers all want the chimney to be at minimum 3ft where it comes out the roof 2) The liner was uninsulated and installed in a masonry chimney with wood framing right against it. I had multiple chimney companies tell me the 2 foot tall chimney was fine and that I didn't need a insulated liner. I basically had to force them extend the chimney and put in a preinsulated liner.

We have a Kodiak air tight fireplace insert stove. It is designed to burn with damped down fires. By your description that seems like it will leave more creosote in the chimney. Any recommendations? We have used that stove for 37 years. Getting an insulated stainless chimney flue installed today.

Just make sure you get your chimney/flu cleaned every few yrs. Every year if you burn heavy in a vary cold winter. That is something that can be done by a home owner if you get the right tools to do it. You do not want a chimney fire, as you no doubt are well aware of.

There are no chimney sweeps available in our area right now. We are DIYing our chimney repair and installing a flexible, insulated metal liner. Our liner came in two 8ft sections that need to be connected with a collar, and we have wrapped it ourselves with insulation. OUR PROBLEM: it’s not very flexible after insulation wrap, and we can’t get it in the chimney without the collar popping off - 16 feet of semi-stiff liner in the air! So now one 8ft piece is in the chimney and the other is laying on the scaffold… have to reconnect the two pieces up on the roof somehow. It’s freezing out and we’re exhausted. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Those types of jobs are tough! In those cases we would use scaffolding or a boom lift to get us much higher than the chimney to drop it in straighter. If you are doing it yourself it would be hard to give advice through here. Have you tried going to www.CSIA.org to find a certified sweep nearby?

You seem very knowledgeable! Question.... Do the liners need brackets or other supports? My boss and I are re building the exposed part of the chimney and we don't want the pipe to fall all the way to the furnace whilst repairing thr chimney. Do you think it will fall? Are they usually installed with supports?
@Ceaserchimney
@Ceaserchimney 3 жыл бұрын
The liners do need support to hold them up as they are flexible. Depending on the type of liner it may collapse or be able to safely lean while the chimney is being repaired. Once the chimney is repaired you will need to install a top plate to properly support it.

So what do you do when you have a insulated 6 inch liner that won't make it past the damper at the fireplace? I'm stuck in that situation right now. 1 other thing... presuming you get the liner past the damper... how do you close off the edges from air flow? Thanks. :)
@Ceaserchimney
@Ceaserchimney 3 жыл бұрын
You have to remove the damper frame, or at least enough of it to allow the liner to pass by while staying round. Usually just the back part of the frame is enough. And if you seal off the top of the flue around the liner with a top plate then there is no need to stop air flow at the damper.

Do the tiles at the bottom of the fireplace have to be repaired before you install a liner? Just had a fire and the tiles are cracked.

If the tiles originally vented wood smoke then we always recommend removing all the tiles, just in case there is lingering creosote

do you have a recommendation for a brand of insulated chimney liner? Can you purchase them pre-insulated? thank you!
@fingolfin9086
@fingolfin9086 2 жыл бұрын
Woodland Direct sells an pre-insulated liner kit in different sizes, its called EasyFlex 316Ti Pre-Insulated Chimney Liner Kit. They are $300-400 more expensive than an uninsulated liner but if you are going to insulate the liner yourself, just the insulation kit will cost you $250, so really you'll only pay an extra $100 or so for a pre-insulated one and save yourself the headache. The pre-insulated ones can't be coiled though, so they are shipped by Freight and delivered by a semi, meaning they will take longer. The uninsulated ones just come coiled in a big box. Either will work though, just make sure you measure your flu and that its at least 11/4 inches larger than the liner to accommodate for the insulation. So if you need a 6 inch liner, your flu needs to be at least 7.25 inches in diameter.
@fingolfin9086
@fingolfin9086 2 жыл бұрын
Correction to this, the pre-insulated ones are still coiled and ship the same as the uninsulated ones.

"You cannot downsize wood pipe or liners from the collar size. If the stove has an 8" collar than the pipe and liner must be 8". Downsizing it leads to chocked exhaust and more creosote and terrible draft. You could install an 8" preinsulated liner or change out the woodstove for one that calls for a 6" liner." - cesar chiminey in a comment below

Just wondering if anyone has real life experience with this subject concerning pellet stoves. I'm curious if they need to have an insulated pipe as well. I only have about three minutes of grey smoke when it starts and otherwise you can't see smoke from the chimney. The pellets burn very clean and leave almost no ash. About two table spoons per forty pound bag. Has anyone examined the liner of a pellet stove flu and seen creosote after a year or more of burning just pellets?
@Ceaserchimney
@Ceaserchimney Жыл бұрын
According to most liner manufacturers all solid fuel liners need to be insulated, and pellet is a solid fuel. Do with that information as you wish 😁

Now a days they all come in 6in and if I just reduce will I loose massive amount of energy ? Or can I Jeep my 8in chimney pipe save 4500 and just put a 6in liner inside and buy the new stove ?

@@davidsimmons3844 my apologies, I read that wrong. In this case you can plumb the 6" stove into the 8" liner without needing to install a new liner. With the liner being insulated it should draft just fine.

See our other videos on tile removal. We never install liners inside flues that previously burned wood due to the lingering creosote and size. Once the tiles are removed we can install the appropriately sized round liner.
Do I need a chimney liner for my wood insert? (Or is it a sales scam?)
