Hello, Elena & Fotios! Currently, in my collection, I only have 2 Martin Wallace games: Brass Birmingham and Rocketmen. I've recently become acquainted with Brass and have only played it a few times, but I already know it will be one of my favorite games. Rocketmen is definitely a lighter game, based on cards. It also features a push your luck mechanic, which adds some excitement during gameplay. And since I enjoy space themes, Rocketmen occasionally takes its place on the table.

Brass is amazing and very clever. We never had the chance to play Rocketmen, but it was always in our radar. We are looking forward to his new design, Steam Power, which is described as a streamlined and light hybrid of Brass and Age of Steam. And of course... a new Brass is coming! We recommend Anno 1800 for you, great at 2p but also good for solo.

Hey, excited about the new brass that will be crowdfunded this year? I hope it’s based in Somerset where you have sheep as a resource :). Wallace is such a versatile designer. I used to own one of his games, a fantasy adventure game called Runebound. It was a roll-and-move game where you build your party by hiring characters and complete quests.

We are really looking forward to it. There is a good chance of a dedicated 2p Brass game! It is true: each of his designs feels unique and quite different from the rest!

We watched the official "how to play video" and it seems very streamlined. We will be looking out for this, the quality of the components looks amazing.

I feel that most boardgame aficionados focus on Wallace's economic games. I love those games too, yet his historical conflict games are even more compelling. Some of my favorites are Struggle of Empires, God's Playground, Princes of the Renaissance, A Few Acres of Snow and A Study in Emerald.

You are correct, we haven't yet had the chance to experience these titles, but would very much like to try A Few Acres of Snow and his newest war game Bloodstones. He is such a versatile designer.

I am excited for you both to tey those designs out. Recall that Wallace was a history teacher and most of his early ludography was focused on historical conflicts. Regarding the range of quality of Wallace’s designs, I have found that his most consistently well-designed games were released by his own company, Warfrog/Treefrog Games. Relatedly, you noted how Wallace goes about designing his games with the theme first. This is very common for game designers in the historical wargame niche of our hobby. I have found that designs crafted through this lens create more memorable game experiences. Do you share this experience? Saludos desde Portland.

@henryrodriguez6260 We do! We vividly remember our experiences of games such as Root, Hegemony, and games in the Arkham Horror universe, all of which are very strong in theme. In all fairness, we haven't experienced many heavy historical/war games, but we would really like to be able to do so in the future.

@@boardgamecourt Those are great, though I have sadly not yet played Root 😞. Arkham Horror LCG is the only game I will solo. Some people like to dive into the deep end when exploring something for the first time. I think Wallace's historical waro's (war/euro hybrids) are a good start. Given your Root experience, something like COIN (e.g. The British Way) or a lighter CDG (e.g. Washington's War or Labyrinth) might be a good place to start. But the best rule of thumb for choosing the more challenging, thematic games is to play the theme that most captures one's interest.
