I actually really liked OMB but the one thing I truly TRULY hated about it was how they all treated Jamal. He always just seemed like an outsider and I feel like they never took him seriously or even listened to him but would then rush to him to tell him all their problems but couldn’t even take 5 minutes out of their day to listen to what he has to say but what I did like was how in S2 he kind of snapped at the start and got annoyed at them for ignoring him but nothing really changed as the show progressed, honestly him not being friends with them at the end didn’t even upset me....like he clearly deserved way better friends and hopefully in the next season he realises that he deserves more than what his “friends” gave him. Also one other thing that also bothered me was when they all realised Jamal got the money, they all immediately felt like they had a right to some of it when they didn’t actually do anything to deserve it??!! And then Jamal was expected to give it away to help Cesar when Cesar didn’t even help him ??!! And then at the end of the day he has literally nothing even though he worked his ass off trying to solve the puzzles and he even got into money laundering and everything for literally no reason, He’s constantly giving and giving and giving away shit to these kids but none of them ever show even an inch of appreciation for everything he’s done for them, it just felt like a one sided friendship to be honest but I’m sure they’ll be besties again when the next season drops which is so disappointing

I don't know why people think Monse was the glue of the group, she wasn't. The group was two cliques: Rudy and Jamal, then Monse and Caesar.

I definitely agree that season 1 was my favourite season. We get introduced to all the characters and see their quirks for the first time PRE TRAUMA( season one wasn’t butterflies and rainbows but they weren’t dealing with constant grief 💀). There was always the threat of the gang and stuff but it was fun seeing them stress over freshman year and not have to worry about all the stuff they do in season 2 and 3. It may also have to do with where I was in my life when it debuted, but season 1 has this certain neighbourhood charm about it that I really love imo.

I feel like tv shows love to make the main protagonist(s) so frustrating that you wanna rip your hair out. Like Ginny in Ginny and Georgia or Zoey in grownish. The characters aren’t all that relatable imo

This video reminds me of the misogyny in teen shows fandoms. Monsae is imperfect (same as Caesar) and is the most hated character. Spooky threatened to r*pe Monsae and pressured his little brother to be in a gang in season 1 and now he’s a fan favorite. See the difference in empathy! Idk. I’ve accepted that these characters (with exception of Spooky) are kids. They are supposed to be impulsive, make mistakes and have their quirks. But it just seems like people in general just hate teen girls especially if they aren’t fitting the beauty standards just right.

The actor Brett came out and said why it made sense for Jamal to be on the football. The man Jamal was digging by his self in a football he not weak now. So he not no linebacker but he can do something. He said his friends always did him dirty so why wouldn’t it make sense for Jamal to go to a different space were he is appreciated

Season 1 was so good but then it went down hill. The other seasons aren't terrible, but they don't hit the same, and that season 3 ending was trash.

My biggest gripe with the 3rd season is that we never found out who lil Ricky is...like is that going to be a piece of the new season? Also Jamal's gf??? I was like she just got that d and went???? Huh???

What I love about On My Block is probably that it’s the most realistic portrayal of teenagers on television I have ever seen. The characters can be annoying, impulsive, awkward, goofy, and inconsistent but that’s because they are TEENAGERS. Ruby is my favorite as well. Now what I can’t stand is where they took some of the characters. For example, Season One revolved around the gang saving Caesar from the gang (AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED) but guess who jumped right back into it?🙄 Caesar annoys me way more than Monse. Also, I don’t like Jasmine and Ruby together.

I feel like this video validates what a lot of people have been thinking. Season 1 was definitely the best (except the fact they had a whole non-Spanish speaking white girl playing Olivia) and idk if the writers just didn't know what to do after? My friends and I definitely felt similarly about the ending of season 3 like the whole scene searching for Oscar in the park and seeing the body felt so out of place? And also having no idea what actually went down.

I don’t really agree with the point of Jamal doing his own purposely. The group forgot about him a lot during season 1. Then only felt the need of him when they thought the money was for the whole group, which it wasn’t. So i seen the break up of the friendship with Jamal from season 1. Jamal and Abuelita carried the season. I hate Cesar as a character.

The writers definitely did Jamal dirty always separating him from the group but I guess it helped us get attached to him more…which btw I absolutely believe he and abuela are the best characters. I can’t wait for szn 4 to see how all the characters’ stories end because that szn 3 finale??? I rebuke its existence.

This show is the embodiment of trying to save a friendship that isn’t worth saving simply because of history. After the first few episodes it was clear they all hated each other and Monse leaving was the nail in the coffin.

My theory on why Jamal is with the footballers: when Monse left in the summer the Caesar stopped being friends with Ruby and Jamal and so when she left again for the private school the guys again stopped being friends, except this time it was Jamal, Ruby AND Jasmine, and Caesar. Caesar stopped coming to school because of the gang and so leaving the other 3 alone. Jasmine and Ruby are now together and i can see Jamal being annoyed or uncomfortable with them being couple-y or Jasmine and Ruby would ditch him all together. And we see the football team kinda respect Jamal after he wins the game so maybe while he, Jamal, is sitting or wandering alone a footballer could bring him to hangout with the team. And idk maybe the footballers bring up his confidence and making Jamal comfortable with playing football or maybe they were like “Hey, wear your or a jersey. You’ve earned it.” Anyways that was super long lmao

I really like the show Jamal and Ruby are my fav characters, I don't know. ABUELITA too!!! It makes me have a fun time , even if it has certain weak spots And I like the soundtrack, they put Latin music that isn't necessarily main stream.

Ok jasmine is actually the best. I thought she was just the token annoying friend but she is amazing and funny and is actually really wise.

The problem I have with on my block is I like the show but hate the characters except jamal and spooky😬 and the last season was a bag of bullshit but there's another one coming so maybe they'll fix 🙃

Ruby is genuinely my favouriteeee character! Unlike the others who did at least once, he didn’t annoy me at all and actually had the most character development and depth.

What's really interesting about the ending of szn 3 is that all the characters became what we as the viewers weren't expecting, i really liked that but at the same time it leaves a lot of questions as to what happened during the time Monse was gone and even how the characters developed without her. I want to see those parts of the plots unfold in szn 4.

I think personally Jamal joined the football team since he had nothing left going for him. all he ever focused on was the roller world money and his friends but since both are those are gone and he was probably going through it especially since the friends grew apart he decided to change himself completely and be apart of something that will make him feel like he has that group (aka football)? idk that's my assumption

it’s one of those shows where i love watching it but as soon as i finish it i forget what happened throughout the whole season

I think Jamal is in the football club because he wanted to make his dad happy but also discovering if it’s want he is meant to be doing. The three seasons , Jamal was mostly focusing on what was happening with the whole treasure adventure and what was happening in the friend group. Jamal maybe had a realization that he actually doesn’t know himself outside being with his friends. Most of the time you could see that he wasn’t taken that seriously causing him to question a lot of things. But also I believe he didn’t get over how the group felt like it was he’s fault that things turned out the way it did. I might be wrong but it kinda makes sense

Okie Im an On My Block fan, and I'll be honest. My favorite season was the first! Felt organic, I liked it a lot. Season three was a bit of a let down for me. Jamal's gf or fling was weird, like they didn't know what to write for him in that season so they just threw that character in there. Idk why Monse and Caesar kept trying to have a relationship when it kept failing. Despite season three being my least favorite, I did like the ending... Its realistic (at least for me) bc I didn't remain friends w those from middle school. It happens a lot, and I was happy for Jamal bc maybe he has friends that actually listen and appreciate him. Im glad Jasmine and Ruby were together, but for the next season- I hope Ruby and Jamal somehow become friends again

Season 2 was at least able to maintain your interest despite not being as good as Season 1. I was genuinely interested in watching Season 3 but it was a let down

I watched the whole show, but I can't remember anything past the first episode of season 2. I think that's about where it dropped off and became an awful show to watch. I'm also surprised you didnt talk about the girl who died at her quince, but I guess we shouldnt give that actress publicity

I'm shook, I didn't realize Monse got so much hate, she's one of my favorites! Her character definitely feels a little underdeveloped compared to her friends though

I feel like you totally forgot the scene where we meet Jasmine’s dad, and we find out the reason she is the way she is. I confirmed her as being my favorite character after that. Her and Spooky are my favorite characters and it is amazing how this shows gives such important roles to “side characters” and not focus completely on the main ones.

Oh yeah, the third season has a lot of issues. A lot of it is so unfocused and many of the issues between everyone remained unaddressed. Also, as much I love Jamal, his arc was not great. Ruby was the most interesting character and he hardly gets any good material outside of…Jasmine? Caesar fared a little better, but it makes nooo sense that Spooky would just leave him behind. And Monse…well, Monse actually made the right move by leaving.

I actually appreciate season 3 ending coz the actors are so much older in real life and it got uncomfortable watching them play highschool freshmen. I hope they do season 4 right and make the show a little better.

I actually shipped ruby and jasmine. Once she just talked to him like a person and backed off a little bit, I was there for it. She also was a huge comfort to him after he and (so bad with names) his love interest got shot and died. Their friendship was really nice. Jamal is my second favorite character. I think the other characters I have love/hate relationship with.

I knew I would see comments about how Jamal and abuelita carried the show but in my humble opinion I feel everyone brings something to the table. I guess that's the beauty of the show how every character is able to shine .What also made the show for me is the tone let me use Lucifer as an example when Lucifer was still on fox before it's cancellation the way it was shot and acted was amazing there was a certain mystery to it even the lighting on the show was celestial but when it moved to Netflix and I am glad that it did something changed for me not the seasons Netflix made are not good they are really good but that mystery I felt during the earlier seasons . But in the case of OMB it got that right I mean they captured the teenage experience very Well and for that OMB will always be superior for me

Yesss Spooky looked fineee in the ending. I wasn't sure why Caesar was upset at Spooky at the end. First you thought he was dead now you're pissed he wants to leave the gang? It didn't make sense to me.

i love ur reviews so i would love to see one of the new netflix show called young royals. its about the swedish prince wilhelm who has to attend an elite school after a scandal, but then falls in love with another guy there, called simon. the show is so pure and the acting was so good, but what i loved the most about it how real everything felt and... authentic.

I really liked S1 and 2, S3 was quite bad because it felt like nothing had consequences. Monse’s mum died, and then what? The writers had some interesting stuff with Selena being super colourist and flaky but uh never mind about that now she’s dead Cesar’s dad returned (then abandons him again) and then what? I agree, the season was super anticlimactic. Kendra and Jamal’s “relationship” went nowhere, and that specifically really bugged me. It kind of enforced the idea that nobody associates with Jamal because they want to, only for personal gain. I get it’s played for comedy but I also feel bad for him :( (Also, Cesar is more annoying than Monse. I understand he has been through a lot, but he is straight devoid of personality. The chase with Latrell in S1 was cool but otherwise he is boring, and he’s basically the main character.)

Like as the seasons go on the protagonists are supposed to develop and grow not the opposite. i.e Ceaser fighting against getting involved in the gang activities for two seasons. Literally put the group through the most and then cut to the end of season 3 and he is literally doing what his character was fighting against from the very beginning! Chapter development where? Progression where? And don’t even get me started on Monse
