For this Star Wars group analysis, David, RyeBold, and Darth discuss the Inquisitor Reva, and whether the Obi Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series actually portrayed her as a strong female character. Please note that discussing whether a character is good or bad is pretty subjective, and parts of this analysis can be pretty misconstrued if taken out of context.

Reva with a hole in her HEART can easily fight, run and carry weights ... And finally, she, who cuts off the hands of all those who disagree, throws knives at people, kills everyone in her path, hunts the Jedi trying to kill them, tortures a 10-year-old child , suddenly cannot kill Luke, because he sees himself in him (but not in Leah) ... by the way, why? Does she know he's Vader's son? How? And Obi-Wan forgives her, although he saw what she was doing and Tala died because of her... As I expected, Reva's motives make no sense. She saw that Vader killed her friends, therefore...she is angry at Obi-Wan who trained him for not saving her? (Why didn't he just say "I was on Utapau, attacked by clones"?) And therefore she serves Vader, hunts all remaining Jedi, tries to kill them, chops hands off and tortures a child to find the Rebels? She is a horrible person and I cheered when she was stabbed...but then she lived.

A story must first stand on its own without needing a re-watch. Even when its a series, imagine a movie goer who goes in and has to pay to watch it- as we all pay with time.. if the story is not good.. or somewhat broken only being repaired with later viewings its a failed story. If you can explore depth with more viewings that is a master piece but that happens very rarely.

I think the guy on the Left wants Obiwan to be this character in depth story but it was written by monkeys with crayons and that might've been what they hoped to do but its not what was achieved. Just imagine a show where Obiwan has PTSD and nightmares of anakin and him in the clone wars. It would've been a VASTLY better show and maybe could've said something about all the combat vets we as a world tend to just ignore.

I agree that it felt like the series felt divided between Obi Wan's story and Reva's story. I see why the Fandom Menace called Obi Wan the Reva show--though it's a bit of an exaggeration. The series started out mostly about Obi Wan but ended up mostly about Reva. Her hatred of Obi Wan felt weak and overblown. Why wasn't he there to protect the younglings during Order 66? Because he was somewhere else dealing with Order 66. I was thinking, "Is she going to hunt down Yoda too for not being in the room when Order 66 happened? How does Reva know Obi Wan is still alive? She just does. It felt like the writers had to come up with some reason for Obi Wan to be involved with Reva's storyline, and the best they could come up with is that he want there to protect her. If the story was just about Reva--if it was advertised to be about Reva--I don't think the Fandom Menace would have even have a problem with it. But it was advertised to be about Obi Wan, and it felt like he got sidelined in his own show for Reva's story. I think the show should have just been about Reva, honestly. Obi Wan shouldn't have even left Tatooine to go save Leia. Seeing him fight Darth Vader was cool, but it shouldn't have happened. That's another thing the Fandom Menace said. Obi Wan shouldn't meet Vader or Leia. The writers contrived a reason to get Obi Wan off-planet so Reva's story isn't confined to Tatooine--and Reva almost killed Luke because he was dumb enough to go off-planet. Her reason for even finding out about Luke felt dumb and contrived, and her reason for going after Luke was ambiguous and made no sense. If Obi Wan wasn't in the show, the writer's could have dropped her obsession with finding Obi Wan and just focused on her revenge story. If she did go after Luke, it should have been because he is Anikin's son, and Obi Wan should be right there to stop her--like he's supposed to.

Thanks so much! And yeah, David and I are both huge LOTR fans, that's definitely on our list to do one day. Currently we're working our way through BBC's Sherlock series, and we're doing at least 2hrs per episode, so it's taking forever. I know we also really want to cover the amazing tv show Community, so yeah, lots of ideas in the works, just finding the time is the hard part.

I think having the force's powers shown consistently is important. Some magic systems do not operate in an understandable way. You mentioned Gandalf, which is a great example. Other systems, are more rigid. Loosely understood magic is harder to do when the protagonist has magic because it takes away some of their agency. It is also bad when loosely defined magic is a big part of resolving the climax because it feels arbitrary. The force is not essential for the climax of the six Lucas films, but it is a large part of the characters abilities, so it should be fairly well understood in my opinion. You also described the progression of the force from being loosely understood in the originals, to more scientific in the prequels, leading to fan demand for a more scifi-like explanations of the force in the sequels. This is hard to avoid. Generally, the more time you spend in a world, the more you think you understand it. The more the viewer thinks they understand, the more jarring it is when something unexpected happens with the worldbuilding.

Interesting point about viewer's time spent in the world. Ironically that may describe an issue I've always had with Gandalf, that he doesn't have a well defined hard magic system. Especially in the final battle of Gondor/Mordor and he exclusively fights with a sword and stick. And I always felt "we should know more of how his magic works by the 3rd film".

You got to refresh some of your Star Wars lore. ;-) For example about the Inquisitorius, created by Palpatine and not Vader. Still, great talk.

Agreed, although she did some beautiful acting during her last scene, so I'm not sure the actress was the issue, maybe just the direction/script she was given.
