One thing comics have lost, in general, is the ability to show the characters as regular people first. X-Men used to have picnics and baseball games on the school grounds. The Thing used to host a floating poker game. You especially can't jump into Dark Phoenix without the progression from the timid Jean Grey, to the confident X-Man, to the overpowered Phoenix, to Jean's corruption, and then finally Dark Phoenix. It's pretty much what DC did in jumping to Justice League

Kyle Nelson Then you don't do it in one movie. That's how Marvel handled the Infinity Gems. It's why you wait until near the end of the second movie to reveal Darth Vader's identity. You need to give the audience the chance to care for the character and then pull the rug out. If Jean had been more than a secondary or tertiary character in Age of Apocalypse, maybe you could pull it off.

Even tho it's not the best MCU movie. Dr Strange did that really well. He started as an overconfident surgeon, then became a broken person then a hesitant hero and now he has a very strong sense of duty

Sofá Perdido Well Legion is a Marvel Television co-production. Though you're really talking about Marvel Films, and the idea that Marvel Television is actually part of the MCU or has anything to do with Marvel Films seems like a complete joke at this point. I'll give you Logan for sure. That movie is amazing. But if you're talking about the whole series of movies, I think Fox's X-Men movies have been way more uneven than the MCU. So while the MCU doesn't have anything that surpasses Logan for me, not even Thor 2 is as bad as X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Wait, doesn't the entire premise of this movie retcon the ending to Day's of Future Past? This movie clearly takes place before the Original Movies Time period but when wolverine returns to the original time from the first class time Cyclops is alive, and Jean is normal and the phoenix thing never happened.
@DSzaks
@DSzaks 5 жыл бұрын
do they? I mean Apocalypse used the same cast from the First Class timeline took place in the time frame between the main events of DoFP and the alternate future ending of DoFP. The fact that this movie also used the First Class cast suggests they are placing it as part of the First Class timeline. The only movie with a nebulous standing in the timeline is Logan, because it is never made clear if it is part of the original future timeline or the alternate future timeline.

While I thought the Dark Phoenix trailer looked surprisingly good, I still think it’s a mistake to adapt that story to their younger years. I think it should have been the final movie with the older cast (obviously in the post DOFP timeline.) In that movie Beast said that the time current always corrects itself or whatever, so I think it would be appropriate for Jean to face the Phoenix again but this time it’s different, since it happened in the original timeline. However while X-Men 3 ended with Wolverine tragically having to kill her, this one would end with Jean overcoming the Phoenix, and maybe someone else dies instead. Instead we have whatever this is.

It's really weird for me, that noone ever brings up, that Eyes Wide Shut is based on a book. And it's a great book too. So most things that don't work are caused by the transfers made from Vienna in the 20s to New York in the 90s.

I think Pretty in Pink is a great examination of toxic masculinity. If Duckie had listened to the father, his arc would be resolved much quicker. And the love interest has to choose between happiness and what his friends (who represent the pressures of male society) want. Plus, I'm 100% convinced that this movie inspired the "hipster" aesthetic.

Question: Wouldn't making a Dark Phoenix trilogy solve the time gap problems? Perhaps the first two movies might have pacing problems if taken by themselves but as forming a larger narrative, it would make the pay off that much more satisfying? That's really the charm of Star Wars, while everyone can debate the merits of the movies individually, the narrative that it is serving is undeniably captivating.

i have mixed feelings on skipping certain plot points. on the one hand, dark phoenix feels unearned because we didnt get to see how this jean grey's relationship has developed with her friends so when she turns on them we dont really care. on the other hand, theres things like showing bruce wayne's parents get killed or uncle ben getting killed for the millionth time. the main argument against the latter is that "we've seen it a bunch so we can skip it". however, in this case i've also seen x-men enough as a very casual fan to know that if jean turns on scott or charles then its still a huge deal. its very hard for me to decide when it works and when it doesnt to skip around like this.
@MrWhiteVzla
@MrWhiteVzla 5 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing when they were talking about wanting to see everything that happened between now a then. I am done with watching Uncle Ben die, Superman land on a pod as a baby, Martha and Thomas Wayne die every single time a reboot comes out. That said, I think that you kind of have to have those scenes because otherwise most audiences don't get what is happening. Take BvS and the outrage behind "Batman doesn't kill" outrage. The movie showed in a couple of clips that this version of the Batman was AFTER Joker killed Jason Todd. Well-versed Batman fans will have an idea that Bruce is closer in behaviour to The Dark Night Returns (the comic) than young and idealistic Bruce from the Nolan Trilogy. However, 90% of the movie goers and reviewers didn't know this detail or decided to skip it altogether and outraged ensued. For BvS Batman to have worked with a large majority of audiences, a Batman movie explaining how Bruce Wayne goes from hopeful to screw Superman, would had solved that outrage. The rest of of problems behind BvS could had been solved with a better movie scrip, but I digress. I'm guessing this movie will create the same problem. People who are familiar with the X-Men will know what happened between now and then, but most people will simply omit the clues or don't understand what happened.

Have we seen that, though? In the last X-Men trilogy, we saw only an adult Jean Grey for the most part and her jump to Phoenix was never really earned other than the fact they had killed her and wanted to bring her back. This time around, we've barely seen Jean Grey at all. The trailer did intrigue me, but my bigger issue with Phoenix is that they keep wanting to jump to it. Imagine a world where the X-Men was a shared MCU-style universe where we had had a lot of adventures/small movies with random character groups and then *bam* we get hit with the epic team up that is Dark Phoenix.
@MrWhiteVzla
@MrWhiteVzla 5 жыл бұрын
Lindsay M.H. I'm not sure if you are replying to my comment. But if you are, I agree with your argument. That is I why I used BvS as an example of not enough exposition alienating audiences. That said with Disney buying Fox, it is possible the MCU will add the X-Men to their lineup. Although, I would enjoy it more if they add it to their Marvel Netflix Universe. I find the X-Men more in line with the complex realities of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Punisher, and Luke Cage than with the black-and-white plots of the MCU

MrWhiteVzla I wasn't replying to you. I was replying to the original poster who mentioned showing things for the millionth time. With the X-Men, we have not actually seen these things fleshed out well a million times.
@mhawang8204
@mhawang8204 5 жыл бұрын
Lindsay M.H. "her jump to Phoenix was never really earned other than the fact they had killed her and wanted to bring her back." I respectfully disagree. They were clearly setting up for the Phoenix in X-2. This is the build-up Joe wants. We got to know her and like Logan, grew to love her in the original trilogy. And we see her losing control of her power and her noble sacrifice at the end of X-2 to save everyone else. The Last Stand failed critically but earned the most at the box office because the fans actually cared. In the new trilogy, though, the focus has always been on the main trio and we didn't really spend enough time with the new kids. I want this movie to be good as a long-time X-Men fan, but with a rookie director at a helm to tell a complex saga and a bad set-up, I'm not optimistic at all.

Although I adore X-Men and did enjoy the first few movies I feel movies are not going to be a saving grace for these characters anymore. Once they join the MCU they'll be Disney-fied and family friendly. The best idea, which is obvious the more you think about it, is that Disney via ABC do an adult X-Men TV show. Not Gifted, not Legion, X-Men! The Walking Dead is going to end and leave a big ABC void, Game of Thrones is going to leave a giant adult drama/fantasy in our lives. We could have a show that gives time to the characters, a good slow burn, builds them up, like the 90's animated show. We could give Magneto a rest and have Sinister, Cassandra Nova, Hellfire club over each seasons, coming back years later. Imagine the budget, not some CW Flash budget, but Disney money, like the new Star Wars series they've commissioned. We could watch Teenagers struggling with their powers slowly become the heroes we've come to love and admire. Watch Jean go from a shy girl to a powerful woman, with subtle hints of that power of the years, then BAM she's super powerful Phoenix, then BAM she's evil and we can't believe it (even though we knew it was coming) then shes' the villain of a season. We need Years not hours. Sorry I went on another Ramble, it just frustrates me lol

The most dmage this Dark Phoenix movie got from is the higher upps from Disney/Fox cos of the damn character rights! The original plan was to make it a 2 part movie so Jean become the phoenix in the first one and then the Dark Phoenix trial in the second one with the Shi'ar and stuff. But then the big Disney buy happened and all went to the shitter... Btw the fight in the suburbs was in the comic aswell!

(I think) unpopular opinion: I don't like any of these new X-men movies from First Class on. I was excited for First Class because they seemed to promise to reset the timeline and take a mulligan after that Last Stand shit show. But then they made it directly connect to the first 3 movies and then rushed through some super interesting story arcs and we've come full circle and are literally right where we started with Phoenix again.

The Dark Phoenix movie is... probably doomed. I don't like being pessimistic after just one trailer, but the problem here is: They've already jumped Jean's arc in Apocalypse. It's either the first or second time we see her in the film where she's literally shaking the mansion, having a nightmare about something dark inside her - and telling Charles Xavier that he doesn't know what it's like to be trapped in your own head. A. Xavier is someone who knows exactly what that's like, and B. he's just literally been inside your head helping calm you down. It's worth mentioning that that's our introduction to this version of Jean Grey. So, all this stuff with her childhood/teenage years, that's all back-fill. She didn't appear in the first two films of this new chronology, so that's where we're starting: She's ALREADY having the nightmares. And then, by the end of the film, she goes Phoenix to take out Apocalypse. I'd say spoiler alert, but Apocalypse isn't a good movie, so I just saved you a few hours of wasted time. So, the plot is going to center around a character in whom we have... no investment. We know what her powers are, they showed those off, but we haven't gotten into her personality at all; and she's been in like... two, maybe three scenes with Scott/Cyclops, so... They're just assuming we already know about that, too. It's exactly like y'all said in the vid: they'll point at the thing, and talk about it, and assume we already knew... rather than ... I don't know... letting us meet Jean sometime BEFORE she's already got this rising darkness? I'm not even all that bothered about it looking to share SO many story beats with X-Men 3... because that movie was sort of a dumpster fire where some very good ideas went to die.

j w - I wasn't aware of that, thanks for cluing me in. Most of my comics collecting was Spider-Man, with only occasional X-men books. Shining Night - I get that; and most movies are... y'know... one movie, where we invest in one character, and they go through an arc, etc. I might've phrased it wrong, but the problem with this iteration of Jean is: there's no character there. Because she debuted in a film with SUCH a large cast and SUCH a disjointed plot... all we know about her are these bad dreams, and she's apparently powerful enough to defeat Apocalypse. These films spend a lot of time on Charles and Erik and Mystique, and very little on anyone else. Even Hank took a major backseat in Apocalypse.

Jean actually had as much screentime as Mystique in Apocalypse.

Comic book storylines tend to be better adapted for TV, since there's more time to establish characters and relationships, as well as adapting the storylines to be as long or as short as they need to be.

As an X-Men fan, to me these films are inconsistent and overtly go out of their way to be the antitheisis of the comics they're adapted from in terms of the uniqueness and weirdness that the X-Men comics are known for, as well as the family aspect. The xmen arw family. They have picnics, they play sports, they're educators and parental figures. These films ignore all of that. The decade hopping is a stupid gimmick too. First Class is the MOST XMEN these films have ever been. DOFP is a good movie, as is Logan. But overall the franchise is bland. It lacks the distinctive identity the comics have.

First Class was OKish...but Mathew Vaghn was responsable for turning Mystique into a silly teenage girl. Teenagers and cosmic and galactic stakes don't really mingle together.

We're not even going to get a tie-in comic for Dark Phoenix like the MCU movies get (which usually end up being a comic adaptation of the highlights reel of the previous movie for the characters).

It is pretty hilarious that none of those characters (other than mystique) have aged a day and it has been about 30 years. I guess Fox is hoping that no one will remember when X-men first class took place lol

Sadly, the quicksilver moment is one of the highlghts of this latest x-men movies. But i have a HOT TAKE: Is the movie going to be interrupted, plot wise, for 15 min, as in X-Men Apocalypse? YES!! Last time was to force a Wolverine scene but in this case a narrative deviation to find what happened to Havok. He survived but was brainwashed and is working with Mr. Sinister. An interesting and fantastic villain, killed immediately by Psylocke as a way to subvert our expectations. She had Apocalypse's blood on her sword and the plan was to resuscitate him But the growing pod with him as a child is destroyed by Cyclops, creating a paradox with Cable but it doesn't matter (Deadpool 2 didn't tackle Cable's convoluted backstory and Disney will snap everything soon) Finally, Jean Grey restores Havok and erases Psylocke's memory, both go away and the movie returns to the Dark Phoenix narrative

Can you really properly do a Phoenix storyline without the rest of the Marvel Universe? Its such a major thing in space and with all the superheroes that you need a little more than just one movie and just the X-Men for this?

I said when the film franchise was going to do the Dark Phoenix Saga; “have they earned the emotional weight to pull off that story?” And I have to say, absolutely not! Making Wolverine the central character in the first trilogy and focusing on Charles’ and Erik’s relationship after First Class, do we really care that this iteration of Jean Grey becomes Dark Phoenix?

Thank you D-Rad for breaking down WHY Jean is so beloved and WHY the Phoenix is important. I'm a huge X-men fan but this trailer was a recasting of X3 and I hate X3. The Phoenix isn't a 'split personality' disorder. Stop hating the source material. I'm not interested and I'm not seeing this film in theaters. Please Marvel, when you get this franchise, don't be embarrassed by the source material.
