Idc if people say that Charlie girl is innocent in this. The fact that she let herself be credited for the dance and took opportunities away from the black girl is telling. So to me she’s just as bad. Colonizer behavior so I’m not shocked🤷🏾‍♀️

Personally I don’t have an issue with Charli (She's a fifteen year old having fun on an app), but the fact of the matter is: she does the same moves in every dance. She does the same dance over and over. Jalaiah's dances are much more complex as seen in the comparison between their videos. The underlying issue is that Jalaiah ASKED to be credited and was ignored.

The thing with the renegade, there’s three people who people think invented it first. There’s the video of the couple who did it, there’s the video of the girl with her mom at the airport who is believed to be the first and now this one. No one really knows who did it first

same thing happened to keondra.k who is a black cosplayer on tiktok, she created this whole insanely huge fnaf trend and popularized two or three video formats and fnaf audios which was a trend that lasted a couple months if I remember right. bigger white creators would follow the trend, and when she politely asked for credit and she was relentlessly bullied and gaslighted for asking for credit. a white creator made up a dance to a doja cat song and no one even though twice about her asking for credit.

@@itsnotthatdeepluv it's literally called lying by omission aka leaving out relevant information such as "I didn't make this dance". She may not have been directly questioned about it but she knows she didn't make it at the beginning and end of the day and could easily say "hey I saw it here first. go give them some love" or something to that extent. It's not hard especially with the number of hashtags people of that status use to get their tiktoks to be found more.

helpmeiminpain I think what the point is is that credit should’ve been given to Jalaiah. Charli got on a SUPER BOWL AD while dancing the dance and nobody knew the actual creator (or where it all originated from because some people might argue that it was changed but that’s where it came from regardless) Although we don’t know what charli’s intent was, she profited off of the dance while everyone had no idea who actually made the dance. Imagine you made a kind of shirt and all of a sudden that shirt was being worn by HUGE celebs and influencers, these people got ads, shows and promos while wearing this shirt, while some might argue ‘it’s just a shirt’ you spent thought, time and effort to make that shirt and the least you could do was get credit. Now i don’t think that just charli should get hate for it, nor do i think it was only her responsibility to credit the creator (although the reason why the attention is on her is because she’s famous and she profited from the dance) i believe everyone should have given credit and jalaiah apparently asked for credit and was ignored. so it doesn’t take away from the topic at hand, which is PLEASE GIVE CREDIT WHEN IT IS DUE.

This situation with the "Renegade" dance is a direct reflection of how the "majority" feels entitled to things that belong to other people. Over and over again we had conversations about cultural appropriation which in my opinion stems from the feeling that some White people have that they have a right to everything. This didn't start recently and its not just limited to taking things from Black culture. Many things that we deem "American" today came from specific minority cultures, i.e. rock music, pasta, hip hop, jazz, folk music, fried chicken, bbq, dread locks, corn rows, etc, etc, etc

i learned that Jalaiah created the dance towards the end of 2019. Whenever I posted about how she created the dance and how TikTok literally whitewashed her dance, everyone told me “oh she’s probably lying” “well that version is too long and boring anyways” and i was just shocked... now that the article has come out and she’s been getting the credit that she should’ve gotten to begin with, those same people want to think they’re so progressive and that they knew all along... 😬

Also choreography does count as intellectual property but once the work has been transformed enough its considered a new thing. Im not sure about alll tiktok dances being dubsmash dances because from what i know they are two different dance styles used on the app. Tiktok uses the literal same 5 moves. That why they're branded tiktok dances. Cause its literally formulaic at this point. Also charli has actually made a tiktok dance herself (the little portugese"love i know" one) and made it apparent that its actually her dance as opposed to any other dance on her page that she just.. does.

Imagine some of these black content creators logged off the internet for a good 6 months to a year. How dry would the internet be? Some of the bigger content “creators” would be ruined.

Charli ended up dancing for Jlo and is getting her own reality TV show. All because of Jaliah.

ppl might not see it as a big deal bc “it’s just a dance” BUT she choreographed a dance to lottery. if anyone is a dancer yk you cannot just steal a part of a dance you saw and make it seem like it’s your own. she knows she didn’t create it bc on her twitter she refers to herself as the “renegade girl” and constantly tweets about the dance. charli has gained 26 mil followers in just a few months, got to dance with jlo, even a super bowl commercial, and so many more opportunities by making it seem like she created THE biggest dance on the app. i have so many problems with this UGH
