Oh boy here's a topic that nobody has strong opinions on: Toxic fans.
While it's important to note that most of my experience in this subject comes from my time in the emo music community and some Tumblr blogging here and there, I think I still have a few things to say about this subject. Whether or not these things are worth your time or attention is for you to decide, I don't make the rules.
Here's a link to that song at the end of the video. I'd tell ya what it is, but Warner Bros would hunt me down and copyright claim the video if I included it in the video metadata. Ask one of the kids in the comments who has a Twenty One Pilots profile icon lol. • Video
Here's a playlist of all the videos I featured in this: • Stan References

I don't think I'm a toxic stan. I really hope I'm not at least. I get really into the things I like though, and just pour over them again and again. I talk at length about them with friends and family and often think about the characters and plot in my spare time. I don't do it for a sense of identity, but because it makes me happy. I love becoming devoted to each new fandom because it fills me with happiness to be a part of. I try my best to avoid toxicity and I can get pretty annoying, but it consistently makes me haply

100% this is what I do too. I get into and have done this with AJR, Twenty One Pilots, and a few other bands that aren't very well known (The Front Bottoms and Raccoon Therapy, still known by some but not a lot of the people I talk to know them) or like with Harry Potter, I get a little obsessed but I'm not going to go after new fans for not knowing what AJR stands for or what style The Front Bottoms really have. Most of these communities were really nice to me when I first started listening or reading, Im going to show the same respect back.

As a Kpop fan I can admit that yes there are Kpop stans and yes they can be jerks or just flat-out creepy, but I also think Kpop gets a bad rep and people assume everyone in the fandom acts that way. That’s just a part of the fandom that makes itself more well-known.

Ugh you really hit the nail on the head with this one. I discovered BTS when they debuted and for years it was an incredibly small community. When they started gaining popularity it made me INCREDIBLY happy because it meant they were getting recognized for their talent and I could finally talk about them without being seen as weird. But it also became immediately toxic. And because they were massive, their first concert around my area wasn't as intimate or kind as I have experienced with previous bands. (A Day to Remember & MCR concert goers were much nicer) I never made anyone feel bad, but it did rub me the wrong way when the same people who bullied me for my music taste were claiming to "not be like other girls". I haven't really followed BTS for over a year now, but I still wish them growth and success.

There are many people that claim TØP and BTS saved their lives. They touched them in a way that made them realise life is worth living and inspired them. Staning is bad, no not having an interest or finding a band or group really really cool, I mean like stalking and constantly trying to get noticed by the group, it can lead down a bad path and never seems to end well, you can still be a huge fan but it’s important not to cross the line, though drawing fan art and writing seems pretty cool
@Cmuse55

@@Toad-eaterofbug The word stan has kinda lost it's meaning of stalker fan, some regular K-pop fans call ourselves stans just because we regularly enjoy the music and stuff like that. The ones that stalk the artist and do shady things shouldn't even be called stans, just simply stalkers.

It sucks for me as a neurodivergent person who tends to become stan-like for at least one thing at a time because that's just how my brain works. I'm self-aware enough to not be toxic, thank god, but it can be really socially isolating to be interested in something so much that it kind of scares others away from you and hinders your ability to relate to others. So in my case, my stan-like behavior isn't a result of social isolation, but rather the other way around.

I honestly hardly even realized that I was unhealthily obsessed with some “emo” bands in middle school because I had such a hard time trying to fit in back then and I felt like constantly listening to these bands and attaching myself to the members kind of made up for that in a way. I was always so lonely and didn’t feel like I could possibly fit in anywhere (which I still feel like today, honestly), but loving these bands so much made me feel like I had a sense of purpose that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I definitely regret being an annoying “fangirl” back then, but thankfully I mellowed out before high school and I’m still able to appreciate those bands for getting me into music and just the fact that I still like them today. Whenever I see these obsessive stans on the internet, I just kind of feel bad for them because it’s definitely possible that they feel like I did back then, with most of their happiness coming from listening to their favorite band’s entire discography in one day or watching interviews with the members for three hours straight, and the reason these kids get into heated arguments with so many people online is probably because of the various internal struggles they’re facing in real life. I don’t wish those feelings on anyone, but they’re unfortunately all too common for 11-17 year-old kids who don’t have much else going on for them, resulting in part of the reason they love bands or other fandoms so much being that they act as a coping mechanism or a distraction from everything else.

I'm honestly so glad I didn't start getting into music fandoms until I was 16/17. I had matured/calm down a lot since Middle School. And boy if I had discovered MCR, FOB, P!ATD, etc. during Middle School, I would have for sure cringe to death right now. (P. S. 7 months late but it’s something I’ve struggled with for a god awful long time, having bounced from fandom to fandom since 9. The last time I ever considered myself a stan had to be at age 12 but just the mere simple act of being enveloped in such fanbases, you become morphed with the crowd. Public figures refer to you as a collective and that is how you learn to identify. A fan of [blank] or a [blank] stan. You ultimately adopt that label until you become just like everyone else. Same social media layouts, same jokes, same quotes, same feedback, same beliefs. A hivemind, if you will. Ultimately, yeah. You really aren’t your own person anymore.

Glad to hear someone talk about this. Especially someone who's been through it themselves. I came across a toxic super fan over a year ago for a marvel character. But they are in their 40s. And used their love of the character ("from 10 years of age" - but it's not a competition if someone else has known the character longer), mixed with their past traumas, as a form of manipulation and excuse to bully. Trying to disguise it as just being "passionate". I tried to support their love of the character, while also trying to reason with them and help them be a bit more kind to others. But they weren't having it. Slowly, they started accusing me of gaslighting, chastising, admonishing, and censoring them. They even felt they got to decide if they were upsetting other fans or not (spoiler: they decided no fan was ever upset by them). I did my best, but I could see things would only get worse as they showed they felt they could do no wrong, they were always the victim, and others were to blame. So I had to end the friendship.

I think fandoms are really important for children (especially for neurodivergent ones) They also create a great start for arts (writing, art, animation, and editing) but it is important to seperate reality and fiction

the reason that i love my fandoms so much is that they give me comfort and joy. yeah, i know a lot about the members of my group, but i'm not gonna bully people if they don't know as much as me. if you like the music and it helps you, that's all you need

I relate to this a lot I really like the mcyt fandom and I was never a toxic stans trust me but I finally am setting up my own accounts and aiming to do stuff like that myself. I’m taking it slow and think that at the age I am that’s what is best but this video is very reassuring with what I just said and am glad to have seen it

Hit close to home for me. I would consider me from 8 months ago a fanboy of sorts, but I've been doing my best to make something for myself that I can enjoy. I find that one issue that comes with this is that the internet can easily make you feel as if your work isn't adequate or you'll never succeed because it makes you compare yourself to others, but I suppose that's a whole different topic itself. I can honestly confirm that your video is great advice for anyone stuck in the Stan loop. While I think it's great to enjoy the work of others, I am 100% behind the idea of making something yourself. Thanks for the video Nate.

I really REALLY wish that stans weren't so prickly towards other people, and other people were able to recognize that there's so much more that hides behind the stan barrier... Also, the ads were placed in the perfect spots... I'm not sure if you did that because I don't know how youtube creator stuff works, but for me the ad placement just built on the comedy.

You are helping me, I watched your Freashman guide so many times in eighth grade that I had a an expectation for it and BOY DID IT DELIVER, Now I'm a sophomore and am probably gonna watch the jr year one when I'm a senior... Thanks so much and you really do connect with alot of us, I'm not special but I did have a toxic stand phase and I'm not anymore I grew out of it and most of what you said is pretty true, it's hard to fit in or feel confident when you grades and friends say you're not as good as us and I'm an aspiring artist that fucking sucks at playing music and drawing compared to my friends and that's okay because at the end of the day, I KNOW HOW TO ALL STAR ON MY GUITAR AND MOST PEOPLE DON'T

Same with me, i had a late 21 pilots phase in 2018-2019. I see my snapchat memories of how fucking cringe i was (i probably still am). But that doesnt really matter to me. My first instrument was also a ukulele, then i went to play guitar. Ive been playing since like 2019 and now im kinda quitting but it was nice while it lasted.

It’s really pleasant and refreshing to see a video where someone’s actually being cool towards these kids and treating them like humans while gently pointing them in the right direction rather than a video where just some dude sits there and bullies children for 10 minutes lol

It also will likely have more effect, because it's far easier for the subjects of this video to dismiss someone who's hostile to them, and allow them to dismiss the entire thing. If someone makes an argument that makes them seem understood and sort of forces them to listen to a valid perspective, it's more likely to actually resonate with someone

I can understand the whole stan thing. I mean its an outlet and stuff and it's good to have those things. Heck because of my autism, if I didn't have obsessive interests, I don't think I would be happy or have any way for me to cope with my problems that normal people don't have. I would be truly alone, more than I already am. But sometimes obsessive interests and stan culture goes too far. Like cmon I get it, you find something that is mostly unknown and unique, you fall in love with it, eventually the thing gains popularity and you end up feeling like the more popular it gets, the more you lose it. You get upset and start resenting the new fans because you feel like they are taking one of the only things you have that makes you happy. But at the same time you have to realize that its part of the job. A musical artist can't make money if no one listens to their songs. You never mean to hurt the artist in any way, but by having that mindset, you are only thinking about yourself and how that creator is only there for you and no one else.
