Okay so as someone who does care about historical accuracy I have a few things to say about this. I am all for having female leads in games. Aloy is one of my favorite characters in games. Love me some Lara Croft too, Jill Valentine, Samas Aran, Mrs. Pacman. All great female leads. BUT when we are talking about a real life event, one that changed the course of human history, we need to keep it as real as possible. Having female characters in Battlefield V is a fine thing, but this representation of a female in WWII is NOT only inaccurate, it is insulting. People who argue that the whole game is fiction and therefore it is okay to have a woman with a fake arm running around on the front line can go sit down. You have an argument so weak I have had roadside lemonade that is stronger. That argument is completely invalid since we are talking about a game that is based on a REAL historical event and the fiction is supposed to be grounded in reality. There is a very BIG reason that this is pissing off people who care about history. The bottom line is this: They ignored the VERY real and VERY awesome women who really did fight in WWII. If you think that the women who were real figures were maybe not exciting or interesting enough I give you Mariya Vasilyevna Oktyabrskaya. Her husband was killed in 1941 so she sold off her possessions and bought a tank and then DROVE IT IN COMBAT against the Nazis. Susan Travers was an ambulance driver who refused to abandon Bir Hakehim, a french fort in Libya. She fought for 15 day alongside the men in the fort and then lead an escape when the fort was over run. How about another Russian? Nadezhda Popova was a bomber pilot, but not a big badass bomber like the one that popped into your head, she had a Bi-plane. She flew more than 800 missions and was shot down more than a few times but kept kicking ass and coming back for more. There are a ton of other example too. Spies who had some awesome stories (perfect for interesting mechanics in a stealth mission) and plenty of stories from the resistance in Poland and France in particular. These women were REAL and had REAL stories to tell. They did incredible and HEROIC things to help fight back the darkness that threatened to swallow Europe whole. EA skipped over them and replaced them with a disabled woman, not because they wanted representation, but because they thought it was a marketable move.

To fix this EA would only need to say this: "We're sorry to disappoint people who expected the level of historical accuracy to be as usual. We changed the game setting to alternative history without warning you ahead, which is a communication failure on our part. In Battlefield V you can expect sci-fi and historical fiction elements on top of a world war 2 looking setting. We also apologize for dispicable behaviour on the part of our spokesmen. They don't work here anymore. The developer team put a treamendous amount of effort into making this game as good as possible, not to propagandise, so w hope this controversy didn't sour your experience with our company so much so to not enjoy a perfectly good alternative history FPS that we promise to deliver." And then campaign on the theme of alternative history until the release.

I think one of the big issues with this whole thing is people shouldn't be saying "historically accurate" when explaining why disabled females fighting on the front lines is weird. I think a better term would be "setting authenticity". It takes away form the believably of you fighting in WWII. It's like if you were shooting at a guy and he starting firing back with a laser rifle. Would it effect the gameplay? No, but it would definitely seem out of place and make you raise an eyebrow.

If she was the infamous Liudmyla Mykhailivna Pavlychenko (Russian sniper chick credited with a staggering 309 confirmed kills), I'd have no problem, because some of the best sharpshooters in history were women, and many fought on the Russian front. However, lady bionic Braveheart here is crossing the line.

Irony is Battlefield was considered more historically accurate and a reason past games, however, it would seem game companies and game journalists are oblivious to this.

Battlefield 1 was so dedicated to immersion that the radio operators, the games announcer of you will was a female voice speaking very proper english. The "hello girls" of ww1 operated american telecommunication systems and were composed entirely of highly educated women from wealthy upper class American families. The United states did not want to risk the communication problems of the other powers at the start of the war but desperately needed operators who could speak French to coordinate with French authorities and infrastructure. French language skills in the us were rare at the time but it happened that learning French was considered part of a proper lady's college education so the call went out for volunteers and they showed up, the elite women of society volunteering to help. Many of the women earned medals (posthumously) for their heroic actions, just as continuing to operate the equipment even as command stations threatened to burn down on top of them. That's how you include the stories of women in the war. Not by putting a woman in with a cyborg arm.

If they wanted diversity they could have easily been historically accurate. If the woman was a French Resistance fighter I don't think people would of questioned it. If they wanted people of color they could have used the legendary British Gurkhas or Soldiers from the US Army's all Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which is the most decorated Army unit to date. But no, they had to acquiesce to the liberals.

Honestly a more recent set game would be great, one of the reasons I loved MGSV was the setting in 80's Afghanistan, which despite several issues with the game, it was very enjoyable to be learning the history of Soviet occupied Kabul. Let us learn history, so cover the Spanish American war, and when you max out a heroism meter, you can hero class as Teddy Roosevelt, and nuke the Spaniards with your laser vision, historical accuracy is important people. That's the main problem with SJW's isn't it...they assume that because you dislike something, it must be for the most ridiculous reason THEY come up with. The problem the trailer had personally, was that it took quite a while for me to understand it's a supposed depiction of WW2... At the start it felt like a "modern pirates meets revolutionaries meets soldiers" fantasy realm...one realm invading the other feel...while such would actually be cool, story and gameplay wise, but that's not what it is.

My big problem is its like... not just multiplayer? They full on DENY the valor and service of some soldiers. Like, that one mission with the teen and her mom? That was a REAL OPERATION. Not done by one angsty teen, but by Norwegian soldiers. Real people. The last member of which died on the 21st of October, 2018. He was ALIVE when this controversy happened. He DIED seeing people discredit his service and the deaths of his friends. This is what the agendas become.

Well, let's just keep rewriting history. Did you know that women single-handedly built the pyramids? Also, Nell Armstrong was the first woman on the Moon. Why, I remember when Georgina Washington sailed across the Delaware fighting the British to become the First female President of America. Black people built Stonehenge and lived in Atlantis. 16th Century Poland was well travelled by Mexicans. And who can forget Jesse and her 12 apostles? The Great Wall of China was engineered by transgender Eskimo lesbians.

Imagine this trailer I just came up with in my head: The camera pans over Stalingrad, until swooping in to show a Soviet sniper completely covered in self made urban camouflage. You see them adjust their scope, then it pans into a first person view. The sniper is sighting in a group of 5 Wehrmacht soldiers and an officer traversing the ruins. Then they fire at the officer, but instead of you seeing him go down, the trailer quickly cuts to the D-Day landing. You see a US Ranger run up to a bunker, throw a grenade in (and letting it detonate), then the camera goes first person while the marine runs in and shoots the one soldier that wasn't injured by the blast. At his shot, the trailer then jumps to a Churchill tank during the Second Battle of El Alamein. You see the tank take a glancing hit, then the camera zooms into the gunners sights until turning around to become the first person view of the tank gunner. The tank commander yells something incredibly British, and the loader yells that the gun is loaded. You see the sight center on a Panzer III, and again as the shot is fired, It transitions to the Battle of Monte Cassino. The scene shows a ragged and bleeding Polish rifleman reaching the top of Monte Cassino under heavy artillery fire. As he runs onto monastary hill, he spots a german soldier, and with his pistol, shoots him, and the trailer goes goes into the skies above Berlin. A Red Tailed P-51 suddenly rises into view. The camera sweeps into the cockpit, and becomes a first person view. You see the plane chasing a Luftwaffe Me 262. The pilot centers his sights, and opens fire. After the flash, you see the location has changed to the jungles of Okinawa. You see an US Army squad patrolling the dense jungle, when they are attacked by a banzai charge. The camera pans to the view of a soldier with a BAR, who sights a charging enemy, and fires. The trailer then cuts to its last scene. The trailer finally returns to Stalingrad. All five of the Wehrmacht are dead. The sniper stands up and removes their hood, revealing a female sniper. The camera then pans out until its covering the globe. Then the Battlefield 5 logo appears with a full orchestral of the the theme song. And a subtitle appears: A World at War. _______ What do you think? Edited to fix some historical inaccuracies and to include the Pacific theater, and a lesser known military force.

I played battlefield 42. It was great. Great immersion. First game you could play both sides. The weapons of WW2 makes for great gameplay. Battlefield V is the first game I will not buy. This is not WW2. This is an alternative history set in a steampunk universe.

The wamens arent the issue for me. The katana's and claw arm are my problem.

This best Example of a Diverse Game that no one cared about the diversity because it was done right was Call of Duty Finest Hour. You played as a Russin Female sniper in Stalingrad and a Black Tanker in the Black Panther Divison. If your going to put in diversity do it right.

I remember play Medal of Honor: European Assault (2005 if I remember) when I was younger. There were women in that game, but the two times I remember were, one: a Soviet/Russian partisan that helps you in the mission to take out the Stalingrad railgun. Two: a French partisan that you have to rescue in the second to last mission where you attack a farm house at night. The reason I bring this up is multi-fold. One: I didn't really take notice of them, they were just other NPCs. I only sort of liked the Russian one because of her line "This is for mother Russia. Burn in Hell!" while she manned a machine gun. This is important for two: because they weren't brought forward as anything special, they were just part of the game. EA, at that time at least, didn't appear to be forcing anything down my throat, just trying to make a game. Finally, three: these roles fit. The Red Army did have female soldiers, and partisan groups in both Russia and France did incorporate women. This was an accurate, and therefore acceptable way to include women which was neither forced, nor preachy. If Dice had done this, I don't think anyone would be complaining. Instead they decided to virtual signal to a massive degree and alienate their audience. So, well done Dice, can't wait to see the sale figures for this game.

The way I see it, I don't want a one-armed woman on the frontlines of World War 2 video game for the same reason I don't want a Messerschmitt (a fighter jet used by Germany in WW2) in Star Wars Battlefront. I buy a WW2 game for what can best be described as "the flavor" of World War 2 just like I buy Star Wars Battlefront for a Star Wars flavor.

The thing is, the people who made 1942 to BF3 (I guess), the ones who cared about authenticity, probably all left already.

I'm now convinced that this is actually a prequel for the Metal Gear series and the woman in question is actually the Boss. The other ethnically diverse people in her squad? That's her unit. They probably have interesting and unique backstories, fighting styles and powers. I mean, it fits perfectly. The Boss was explicitly said to have served in WWII. Mister Kojima, you're a genius!

This just screams immersion to me.

I love it when people who don't know anything about guns think that a person has to have a bunch of extensive training in each and every separate gun, in order to use the variety of guns used in an FPS game. Very few firearms actually have unique functionality, especially in WWII. It takes less than an hour to get used to minute variations like a gun's action, recoil, or accuracy,(Hell, in most cases you are able to adapt to those changes by the third or forth shot you fire) and in basic military training, you are exposed to and taught to fire a variety of weapons anyway. That is part of the process of determining where you will place, or how you will outfit, a new fresh faced, green behind the ears, soldier in real life. If you know how to fire a bolt-action rifle, then you know how to fire all bolt action rifles. You need to know practically nothing to be able to use a semi-automatic rifle, because they all work the same; pull the trigger, and a bullet comes out. Same with handguns. If you can fire a Colt 1911 handgun, you can fire a Magnum Research Desert Eagle, or a 9mm Glock. If you can operate a revolver, you can operate almost all other pistols of the period. It doesn't take years of training to figure out how to use a new "alien" weapon, if you have any previous experience with a weapon. Safety training is basically universal for all firearms, big and small, with few exceptions. Military training gives you plenty of knowledge to use in a situation where you need to replace your weapon with one dropped by a fallen enemy. Hell, in WW2, if an american soldier picked up and MP-40 because he was low on ammo, he would then be guaranteed to have a constantly replenishing source of ammunition from then on out, until the battle was over. It wasn't encouraged, except in cases where absolutely necessary, and sometimes the weapon could be confiscated by your CO, when the fighting is over. This did absolutely happen though, that is one of the reasons that, here in the US, we have so many WW2 museums filled to the brim with Nazi, Italian, and Japanese weapons; because soldiers regularly took weapons off of fallen enemies in combat. Sometimes with the intention to use them, sometimes only as a trophy/souvenir. The argument that "It's unrealistic and unbelievable that a trained soldier would be able to use such a variety of weapons" is utter fucking garbage.

If you want to show women, show the bloody French resistance. Or some of the all women battalions in (I think) the Soviet army. There weren't any mixed gender outfits in the war except for resistance/Guerilla groups. And if you want MP as the focus, don't pretend to show a campaign scene. And the action.. My god.. It was so cliched and stupid. The trailer actually sucks, but not because "hurr durr is a gurl on der" but because this is history, not fantasy. FFS.

No one will probably see this but I see people saying that people didn't buy the game "cause woman" and that it was a good game and that it doesn't have to be historically accurate. 1. it wasn't just "cause woman" it was because they made the prosthetic of the woman the center of attention for example where she appears multiple times throughout the trailer and even zoomed into it instead of showing the chaos of war and showing many different locations or maybe they should have not made such a shitty trailer 2. The campaign is fine but what people buy battlefield for is the multiplayer and it was bad due to bad game mechanics, many bugs and the dead servers. 3. if you are going to make a game about WW2 then it has to be historically accurate otherwise don't make it about WW2 if you are not gonna make it historically accurate. Its not just ww2 because if you are gonna make it about a time period or an event in history make it accurate.

My grandmother served in WW2. I've seen photographs. I've interviewed her for a school project on WW2. Nobody is denying that she did this. But she never saw frontline combat. She was a courier. She delivered messages. Nobody is denying that that is an *incredibly* important role. Intelligence wins wars. She did NOT however, beat someone to death with a club on the beaches of Normandy. The blowback from, I am guessing, 99% of the people on this issue is because of the obvious rework of history to push a flawed and toxic agenda. Maybe 1% are genuinely racist or sexist, idk. If devs really want to make a diverse and inclusive game, I believe they should create their own world. Or set it in the future. There's infinite possibilities that way, right? If I'm playing an RPG like Mass Effect or Dragon Age then I frankly don't care about the race or gender of my crew. I pick them on personality and class.

If your gonna make a WW2 or WW1 game then at least make it historically accurate and respectful.
