For this video, we got together with one of our good friend Chris Meckley of ACI Aquaculture to talk about his latest obsession on corals, Goniopora sp.
He shares his experience with the coral, his recommendations, all the dos and don'ts while giving you an realistic expectations and definite different results from a coral that was once called 6 month coral.

In my experiences high light will "allow more nutrients" (read less necessity of worry in controlling/ exporting nutrients) because it is processed faster in the loop by the zooxanthellae. The less light the less will be the consumption of dissolved nutrients because it isn't processed as fast in that loop, so nutrient control is more important. Now... the term "high light" and "low light" is as just as relative as "high nutrients" and "low nutrients". That said... high light/ low light involves PAR/intensity as well as energy emitted/ spectrum (which is a very wide thought!), and the distribution/ delivery of photons. Not to mention the type of light (metal halides/ T5s/ LEDs) and the many differences within each of those applications. Just as high nutrients/ low nutrients need to be specified in terms of quantity and types (dissolved or particulate, for example). The type of organisms, quantity of those organisms per amount of water, and processing of those nutrients, besides exporting them by water changes and by skimmer, etc... will be different in many cases. That's why we see so many different results in regards to the relationship between light and nutrients. It's the particular balance/control (including by some bacteria) of light/nutrient in each different system with different lights and nutrient balance. That process matures as the system matures. It changes with time and addition/ growth of corals. Gotta love Goniopora!!!!! Great video!!! Thanks for the tips, Chris!!!!! Suppressed pH boost indeed!!!!! Ha! Aloha!

Great information. I'm a believer, have never been able to keep gonis long term but adding trace elements they seem to be thriving now. There was one thing I will question, Chris stated that High light w/ low nutrients, and low light with high nutrients. For acros I felt it's the other way around. With higher light and metabolism I can have higher nutrients in the water. I'm not sure why in detail but if I run a higher alk system for growth according to Red Sea and my nutrients drop my acros will RTN/STN. Just wondering if this relationship coincides...

The great thing about reefing is that it can be done following different methods. I always say, pick one and if your animals are thriving you know you’re on the right track. With that said, I’m sharing my experience and what works for us here at ACI and what I believe would work best in any size Aquarium. We specifically target a stable and consistent PH 24/7 of 8.3. This is what dictates all other parameters and the incredible growth rates we are observing. We also use primarily one manufacturer of salt, additives, etc. Based on our observations and what we specifically target, corals in a tank with a higher intensity of lighting thrive in a lower nutrient environment. Corals in the same environment with lower intensity lighting tend to be happier in a higher nutrient environment based on our observations: Hope that helped clarify.

We have goni’s that are so finicky, I’m learning what is lacking in the water if no pests or predation is happening. If the goni you are talking about doesn’t respond to spot feeding, then try a Chemi clean bath for 30 min in a small container with an airstone or other means of gentle agitation. 2 1/2 scoops (that come with the Chemi clean) per quart of system water. This is assuming your water is in the range prior to the goni not extending and nothing drastically changed.

All of the suggestions Chris makes are based on his massive coral farm. Most people have tanks under 125 gallons so they don’t really apply. A lot of the info he gives is anecdotal to his reef farm. For example he says add trace elements, but offers no examples in smaller systems how this works. He feeds his corals but, that can be risky in a smaller system. I do agree light and a systems nutrient level play a role along with leaving gonis in the same spot undisturbed, but most of the info he gives is too vague for most reefers to apply. It seems true that some gonis are more finicky however there’s no mention on which ones he feels are easier to keep. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to farming corals but I’d like to see what his results would be on a smaller hobbyist type system.

Hi Ray, thank you for watching the video and for the comment. I respectfully disagree with your above statement. Keeping water is same regardless the amount. The fact that corals that are fed grows significantly faster, that corals need good and stable water condition (including correct parameters) corals needing good lighting and ample amount of water movement is fundamental to reef keeping. It does not change regardless of the volume of water. He tells you to check and dose trace but doesn't tell you how much to add exact ml because every system is different. Meaning uptake of those elements are different depending on the filtration that you have, salt that you use to base and to replenish, rate of replenishment by frequency and amount of water changes and the basic estimate intake that biomes, microfauna and animals that uptakes those traces that you have in the aquarium. Also like you said, dosing anything can be risky if you do it blindly without measuring or knowing what you need to do. He can't give blanket statement because many of the traces are metal and if you dose incorrectly and overdose, can cause your tank to crash. I appreciate your feedback. However, I would have to kindly disagree. The methods we use in our farm systems would most certainly work and are currently working in smaller systems. In regards to trace elements, dosing trace elements is strictly based on the instructions from the manufacturer. I dose based on my water volume and you dose based on yours. You can choose to dose or not. In my experience, these particular animals thrive under certain conditions and that is what Richard and I want to share. It’s all about the animals. 👍

Your right of course and glad you clarified some of the things you said.l have kept gonis for awhile and the last couple of years have had great success mainly due to better salt mixes with the proper balance of trace elements like Accurasea by two little fishies. I agree that feeding would be beneficial, but for me it’s too easy to overfeed in a smaller simpler system. The one species of goniI l have had trouble with is the green glitter type Goni. They grow well but can easily go south in all but the most stable of systems. Thanks again!

Can Goni be kept at 72 degrees or lower. I was think about adding a Scoly and running lower temperature.

Hi! If you watch, that's the pH of the kalkwasser vat. He keeps it around 8.3 to 8.4.

Hi I've wanted to dose manganese but I can't find any information on how much to dose per gallon

Every manufacturer is different because of the concentration levels but this is what I got from triton. They're recommending 3.5ml/daily for 2 days, and then a . 5ml/daily maintenance dose. The 100ml bottle of Triton Manganese is about $35.

yah for sure. Also, when a few are struggling, it sometimes helps to add a new one to the system. If the new one opens up and does well, but the previously added ones are still struggling, it may be an issue with those particular corals--not with the water anymore. In that case, just leave the parameters alone and wait. I've had gonies down to a couple polyps come back fully :)
