4 years ago, I made a video with Chris Meckley of ACI Aquaculture on the topic of Zoas and Palys. Little did I know at that time, that this video would become second most watched video of the channel.
On the hindsight, all though it was informational and great video overall, my equipment at the time wasn't up to par as that was when I was first starting to work with Chris and was JUST getting used to dealing with so much ambient noise in his warehouse. Many of you guys have told me this and I have been thinking of re-doing it for a while.
Fast forward 4 years, I have finally gotten around to making a revised version of the video with Chris in hopes to
1.) Create more accurate, informational video.
2.) Content with better audio and video quality.
3.) Relevant with all the latest findings.
I hope you guys find the video educational, fun and enjoyable.
Happy new years everyone and here is to amazing 2022!
Richard

Great tips as always! I use hydrogen peroxide and Lugol's solution for dips only, for infections. 8 to 10 oz of tap water (it doesn't need to be RO!), with 5 to 8 drops of hydrogen peroxide OR 5 to 8 drops of Lugol's for like 2 minutes or so. The less time you dip the better for the zoas. They hate dipping! Too much food isn't good. It deteriorates the water quality and bacterial infections start to happen. Same with vitamins and amino acids... great, but in the right amount! Always accordingly to the number of zoas per tank (percentage of coverage). Those are the mistakes that people do all the time: the excess of anything, specially food! Target feeding with food that will actually fit in their mouths!! Powdered dry foods are the best in my experience, 3 times a week max!!!!! Clean water! Kalkwasser, iodine and strontium indeed! I use SeaCheam for iodine and strontium! Great indirect water movement! Great lights are the T5s! They do amazingly under T5s! Under halides they will develop pigments that they won't under any other light, though! I like the combination of halides and T5s the very best. That is the optimal lighting to any reef tank IMHO! Avoid the use of activated carbon or any phosphate removal medias and specially lanthanum chloride!!!! You don not need them at all to run a reef tank, specially with zoas! Water changes will do the job keeping the water clean and fresh, exporting organics and anything from the system. Get a great skimmer and use it 24/7 without any fear! Clean water! Shark bag in the sump! Make sure you have fishes that won't eat the polyps! Yes, be very careful with Palytoxin!!!!! Gloves, goggles and a shut mouth! No pets around! Clean surfaces with diluted clorox after and then tap water! Make sure to clean your fragging tools well with running water an dry them. Do not leave them sitting after you finishing fragging and make sure you clean the area well!! Make sure the adults in the house know about palytoxin and keep kids and pets away from the area during the time you are fragging! Signs of palytoxin are: taste of metal, dizziness, weakness, fever, and headaches! Go to the ER, if you feel any of those symptoms and if you connect them to the possibility of palyoxin poisoning!!! Can't go wrong with Chris' tips. Healthy reef organisms is ACI's signature! Just one more thing... zoanthids aren't corals, they are zoanthids. Ha! ;p Love you guys!

Really pleased it was myself who started posting around the forums like reef2reef etc about using Chemiclean for Zoas just to bring it to people's attention it mostly got totally ignored or raised eyebrows from people but looks like it's catching on now...a few of us in the UK started doing it back around 15 or so years ago but it mostly got forgotten about over the years 😎

Thank you for making this video. i am a huge zoa fan, and am lucky to grow them very easily. i have a huge rock which is now nearly covered, my question is can i take off polyps from this rock to frag whilst it is still in the tank ? i know this is not ideal but the rock is too big to move safely. thank you
@Reefscom
@Reefscom 2 жыл бұрын
If it's on a huge rock, best you can do is to razor the parts that you want to frag. You can also place frag plugs or discs near the zoanthids and let it grow over it so you can easily frag off of it in future.
