In this video I share the discussion I had with my local Toyota Dealer… they are already slapping $10K markups on the 2024 Land Cruiser. Let me be clear, they are already trying to take advantage of people on inventory they don’t even have yet. Smh…
Greedy dealership tactics need to stop. With high interest rates and supply back to normal, they need to quit the games. I’m personally fed up with this, something has got to give. Toyota needs to hold their dealers accountable and ensure they are conducting fair business practices. I shouldn’t have to call 40 dealers and fly to North Dakota to buy my new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser. MSRP should be their cap. Am I wrong to think this?

Dealerships arent going to go away...them having 5 acres of new car inventory is. You will buy directly from Toyota, they in turn will deliver it to your closest Toyota "dealership" where you pick it up and get introduced to your "service advisor". Service dept is how they stay in business

This is exactly why I won’t get myself excited about any of Toyotas new offerings. The dealers have completely ruined the experience and I’m not playing their games. I truly hope they go under.

@@youtubecarspottersguide1 absolutely. i was originally going to buy the new sequoia but it was too big of a vehicle for my families needs. my local dealer was selling at MSRP but had to wait over a year. contacted a different toyota dealer 2hrs away and said $10k increase for customers not living in the zip code. made no sense to me. glad we waited since we're now in the market for the land cruiser....hoping to pay no more than MSRP.

You should name the dealership. You and everyone should boycott any dealership who charges over MRSP. Let these dealerships know you will never buy a vehicle from them and you will tell all of your friends and family to do the same. Make it disadvantageous for any dealership to treat customers this way. They should be lucky to have your business. These greedy dealerships only think of the here and now and not customer satisfaction or their long term reputation.

Angela Kraus Ford, Alpharetta GA. Dealer added markups on a Bronco Raptor reservation only after the vehicle was delivered. Basically stole my reservation, claimed they had the right to refuse selling the vehicle. Dealer cared more about making more money with other customer than honoring the agreement. Didnt even try to fix the issue or offer a deal in other product. I step out and didnt look back, rather use my time helping build the reputation they truly deserve.

Bought my 2022 lime rush trd pro for msrp ($53k) back in february of 2022 from Firelands Toyota in Sandusky, Ohio. Great to deal with after dealing with $10K to $15K mark up attempts from other dealerships.

Despite being a Toyota enthusiast, the excessive dealer markups are the main reason why I am unlikely to own another Toyota unless they start selling directly to consumers. I believe this behavior epitomizes greed, and it saddens me that they persist in doing so. I reside in California, and it appears that this practice is widespread here, with markups ranging from $7,500 to $10,000 being quite common

Not sure how things work in the states. I heard that in Canada, Toyota/Lexus will threatened to sever ties with dealerships for repeatedly mistreating customers. I had an incident with a Lexus dealership that I could not resolve and almost gave up. My last hope was to reach out to Toyota Canada to ask for advice. They didn’t say much to me, but to my surprise the dealership reached out to me the next and offered to resolve things on my terms. So my experience along with anecdotes from other people makes me think that Toyota actually cares about dealership issues and brand image, and we should bring our complaints with dealerships straight to Toyota. See if that works.

I really believe they should just convert all dealership locations to mechanic shops for warranty work/ repairs and oil changes, and maybe have one of each model on the lot for test drives. Then switch to direct to consumer from online like Tesla. I’m not a Tesla fan, and obviously that model isn’t perfect, but at this point it’s way too out of control with dealer greed. And they have no shortage of BS excuses for why they do it.

It's beyond sad we're "excited" over the fact we can buy a Toyota at MSRP. Toyota really needs to do something about these absurd dealer markups. Why they allow they to do this is beyond me as it ultimately taints the brand.

Thanks for making this video! It’s a shame that so many car dealerships just conduct themselves like crooks. They do not give a shit about people. Even if you avoid markup, be careful not to pay for dealer add ons, that can quickly add up to a few thousand dollars. Even more sad, that Toyota corporate also does not care about this practice, whatsoever. The more people speak up about this, the better. Here in the LA area, dealers to avoid for sure: Toyota North Hollywood, and Toyota Pasadena

I am glad that you took the time to make first hand experience video which is very useful. This kind of situation are hurting brend the most by killing enthusiasm and excitement for their product! Car dealers are not punished for this behaviour but for instance expensive watch brands such as Rolex would strip franchise off their dealers.

That’s happened to me too first the salesman said to me we probably going to get 500$ as a deposit but then he went and talked to his supervisor to ask him about the new vehicle details and when he came back he said I’m sorry but my supervisor told that due to rarity of the vehicle so we need to hold 5 to 10 k$ as deposit and we have to add 15k mark up and then I said this is crazy just insane and I didn’t even discuss the issue with him any farther and left and the reason I’m telling my story is for Toyota company to take note that I felt so sad after that happened to me because I was so excited and happy that I’m the near future I’m getting a land cruiser but these guys kill the dream and pull the smile out of our hearts and I hope Toyota will be very strong on demanding MSRP forced on dealer not to mark them up especially for a legendary vehicle like the Land Cruiser!!

People, do not forget to do one thing: leave a one-star comment on the dealer's google and yelp review page if they charge markups. let others see. That's your rights. I always left reviews for dealers on matter good or bad experiences I got to help others.

Great points! I’m bracing for the markup if we decide on LC…still bummed about tow rating not being a bit higher though. We bought a 2020 4Runner from local dealer (Bills Toyota) in Ontario, Canada and my wife’s work colleague bought same year and trim and Buffalo, NY dealer for a few thousand more and that was without doing currency exchange. We don’t often buy new so didn’t even clue in to dealer markup being a thing but now understand why someone just a few km’s across the border ended up paying way more- they found a greedy dealer.

In central Ohio I have dealt with McDaniel Toyota and Byers Toyota since the pandemic started. Neither charge more than MSRP and no goofy required paint protection, poly shield, blah blah blah….I highly recommend them.

My wife and I love to buy cars and trucks from distant places -we make a mini vacation out of it-some dealers in past bought our plane tickets and had their runner pick us up at airport-saved 1000’s-got the one we wanted-we buy at best price and sell or trade At private party pricing which is between wholesale and retail-usually keep vehicles less 3 years which means really no dealer service beyond oil changes-always worked out

Good for you in showing that sales rep what’s up. As for Toyota dealerships selling for MSRP, that depends on the area of the country. Here in northern Virginia you will not find any dealerships selling for MSRP. Another reason I’m buying American and not Toyota anymore. I was able to get a 2024 Suburban and 2024 Escalade ESV UNDER MSRP! Meanwhile Toyota dealerships are marking up their Sequoias $20,000 plus. No thanks. Goodbye Toyota.

I put a down payment yesterday on the Land Cruiser in TN. My dealership verbally promised to go by Toyota's suggest sales price. This particular dealership did point to a competitor in a town nearby and said they do exactly what you said here.

As long as you have people that are willing to pay any price, this will continue. I can't believe how they can charge over MSRP and essentially name their price with impunity. Manufacturers are also responsible for this situation given how little inventory they release to keep a delicate balance in favor of demand so it outpaces the supply.

Did the same on my hybrid rav4 and there was an insane amount of additional stuff and games like its “unobtainium”. I Told them, you know what at 7% interest and additional mark-up, i’m going to keep my current toyota and get a hybrid velar. Never regretted it.

I usually just let the sales person know what price I’m willing to pay, currently that’s MSRP for hard to get vehicles. I have a different view on mark-ups. While I don’t like them (and won’t pay them), I don’t blame the dealerships for trying to get a higher price. Lots of people would just game the system, just look at cars and bids, they have 3 rivians a week, all sold over MSRP with under 500 miles.

I’ve never worked at a dealership, but I did order a 2021 4Runner TRD Pro from Pauly Toyota (IL.), during the plandemic, and they were great. I paid MSRP for mine. I would buy from them again. I’ve called other dealerships in the Chicagoland area recently, and they’re tacking on ceramic coatings or other things that the customer doesn’t have a choice on. That’s not right, imo.

Beginning of 2020 bought new Tacoma TRD from Cherokee County Toyota, Canton, Ga. got it below MSRP and it was loaded to the max. 2022 came around and bought a 4runner limited loaded for MSRP and couldn't believe it. Great staff to deal with plan on going back when new 4runner comes out.

Bought a 2006 Tacoma new. I was hit by a semi in March and was a total loss. Went to two different dealers here in Metro Atlanta to look at buying a 2023 Tacoma. Both dealerships told me that the distributor in Jacksonville wanted to add packages that I didn't want and refused to let me order what I wanted. So, I'm done with Toyota

A few years ago when I was in the market for a Land Cruiser ..EVERYONE.. was marking up but I found a gray Heritage in Denver for MSRP.. I had to ask several times.. yes, MSRP.. I lost it though when we decided to buy the house we were renting. Makes me wonder if it was the same dealership.

Toyota of Cleveland (TN) offered me Grand highlander hybrid max at MSRP plus doc fee. No market adjustment or dealer installed options. Even though I ended up not buying it, had a great experience with them. Called a couple other dealerships and Toyota Direct in Columbus OH seemed not to have market adjustment, but Brunswick Toyota (Cleveland OH) had 3.5k adjustment

McDonald Toyota in Greeley for me as well. Worked with Nekoda Jacobs… definitely one of my better car buying experiences. At the time (Feb ‘22) Tacoma TRD OR’s were $5k average markup in Denver area. MSRP at the time of purchase and no funny business in finance.

I walked into a Toyota dealership in Chesapeake Va and was looking to purchase a new Tundra. When I sat down to talk price they gave me a price 20K over MSRP. My jaw dropped. I told the salesperson I have never in my life paid a market adjustment on a vehicle and it wasn't starting today. I have to also wonder because I pulled up in a 22 Escalade that they figured I had money to burn and was stupid enough to do it. Horrible, horrible people trying to take advantage of the public like that.

Sad to hear orders will/may be marked up, I am picking up a Bronco today, Ford is giving me a discount that mounts to the price increase for 2023 because I was on list in 2022! That’s customer respect….so I am 2500 under MSRP!

My salesperson at Fred Anderson Toyota in Raleigh, NC would not sell a vehicle for more than MSRP.

We took our Camry to McDonald Toyota in Greeley for service. In addition to the top dollar pricing for some basic maintenance service they charged us a 17% dealership fee. They did do a great job. I looked at the stickers of various new models during our lengthy wait. ALL of the cars had dealer markups on them.

Their used inventory seemed overpriced but the new models were all at sticker when I’ve bought from them a couple times now.

This LC will be produced in a different plant with higher capacity so yes there will be more of them. I’ve been looking for a GR Corolla for months and the whole car buying process today makes me sick.

All the Murdock dealerships in Utah (Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Hyundai, Genesis) refuse to charge ADM. They only charge MSRP - they consider it immoral to do otherwise.

I am fortunate that the dealership I've used for my Toyota products (Crown Toyota Lawrence, KS) did not participate in ADM's for the 4Runner TRD PRO I bought this year, unlike the other dealerships in my city to the west and in the Kansas City area that I checked. I went back to them after having a great experience with a Tundra I bought from them back in 2020. Very easy dealership to work with.

I stopped in at a dealer in Traverse City, MI (Serra Toyota) last year during a trip across the US, and asked the sales dude what their pricing approach was, did they charge an ADM over MSRP, and he indicated that they price only at MSRP with no upcharge. FWIW.

The markups aren’t because of bills…it’s pure greed! Consumers need to walk away, but they won’t.

Firelands Toyota in Sandusky OH sold me a new Camry SE for Invoice. I had a Toyota employee certificate and they honored it.

Servco Motors (Toyota, Lexus & Subaru) on O’ahu (3 locations, Honolulu, Waipahu & Kaneohe), Big Island & Kaua’i has always sold at MSRP or little bit under.

I got the same answer , I called a local Lexus dealer asking about the new GX550 , he said they are taking orders but the will be a 5K$ mark up . I told where to go .

I had a similar encounter in a SOCAL dealership. Advised they Heritage would be about $30-50k above asking. Salesman told me "gotta pay to play"

While dealerships sell less and make more doing this, there has to be an overall loss in the volume of sales for the company. At these markups, you could get into luxury car territory. Many of those cars don't have markups because they may be mid cycle or just don't sell well enough to pull it off. I'm surprised with that in mind, that Toyota, and others, haven't gotten a handle on this. Or maybe I'm just wrong and everything is fine for both the dealership and the dealer.

I think we’re seeing the end to the shortage problems. My theory is that dealers are using this “better get it now or else you won’t get it for months” line because it’s another pressure pitch to sell cars. I picked up a Lexus iS 350 f sport recently with no markup and they actually came off sticker $3k. They want to move the vehicles. Maybe Toyota is different since more people want them. But I’m not convinced there’s still a true shortage in the sense we’ve been used to and led to believe. I looked at a platinum tundra last week. It was set to arrive this week. No markup. They wanted quite a bit more than the Lexus I got, but no markup. And lots of tundras were set to arrive.

Just checked my locals. All three charge market adjustment and or overpriced additions. Laughed it off and left. Supply and demand, not much we can do about it except hope FED raises interest rates faster.

These ADMs seem to be mainly a US practice. Here in UK it’s not a thing in my experience. Dealers ripping people off on the back of the Pandemic. According to @AutomotivePress the production numbers should relatively high, based on the Toyota Japan & Hino factory’s being used for production. As you say just avoid the dealers adding ADMs and good luck 👍

Edmark Toyota just outside Boise Idaho is charging me MSRP for one of their first allocated Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited. Highly recommend Nate as a rep. He contacted me at every single allocation and found exactly what we wanted on a dealer swap.

I got my deposit and was lucky enough at my local dealer to be the 1st and they said they will get allotted for sure 1 1st edition and I have got it reserved when they do get it. They hope they get a couple but expect just 1 of those. I did have to agree and have it in writing that I will pay 1500 over msrp for this unit being the only specialty one they will get. If I choose to take 1st land cruiser other than the 1st edition it will be msrp. I also put another deposit at a dealer about half hr away and I am third on list for 1st addition and I will get it at msrp no Mark up but they only expect 1 maybe 2 of them being only 5000 total. But list gives us 1st choice on any land cruiser. I feel very lucky because this will be my last vehicle and being lucky to be 1st at local dealer they said I will get the one they will receive

Sounds like many dealerships are still under the assumption that they are in the driver's seat and customers are desperate for vehicles. Shout out to my local dealership, Vancouver Toyota, in WA state who sold me my '22 4Runner TRD Pro at MSRP during peak pandemic madness. Thanks, Untamed.

Just got our 2nd Toyota in the span of around three years from the same guys here in Helena MT. A Prius for 29k. I’ve never dealt with a better dealership in my life. Not even, in the good ol’ days of 2004-05.

Well, there is a very simple remedy for these insane ADMs; Just don’t buy the vehicle! At least wait until prices come down. It isn’t the real Land Cruiser anyway..
