Whether it's games, controllers, yo-yos or espresso, your hobbies define you and propel you forward. Make yourself a cup of coffee and let's talk about why it's more than a hobby, it's your desire to go beyond the surface and discover.

I agree 100%. On the condition that the hobbyist does not gatekeep it from outsiders. It is great to hear other people's passions, but some people (regardless of hobby) judge and gatekeep others, maybe others in the hobby and maybe others who aren't. Just don't be those people. I can enjoy my craft beer from a local brewery without looking at other people with disgust and calling their light beer piss. I can know every bolt in my miata without judging someone else for having a car as an appliance. I can have my choice of grinders and filters etc., without criticising someone who grabs the cheapest instant coffee and drinks it just out of a need for caffeine instead of for enjoyment. Etc etc etc. I am not into beers or cars or coffee, they were just examples.

People seem to think lately that if they enjoy a hobby instead of being an entrepreneur they are somehow wasting their life. Especially if that hobby is video games. It’s the only hobby that is unanimously considered to be a waste of time especially by people who never miss their sports team play, or have no problem binge watching a Netflix series. Somehow passive viewing is considered normal, but active playing and involvement is for kids and it’s time to grow up. Strange phenomenon.

I went through my whole teenage years repressing my hobbies or stuff I enjoyed just to fit in with my peers, in the end, when I just went out and accepted who I was and what I was into I had a blast, and people around me didn't even care that much, being free to wear what I want, nerd out about what I enjoy and having a physical representation of what I love, be that an album, poster or shirt makes me extremely happy with myself.

When you talked about hobbies, time, and mastery, there was a comment I saw a long time ago that explained how this person tried out many different things but never truly mastered any of them but an older person told them "I think it's interesting how you got to try out so many things. You may not be a master of any of them but you have amassed a wealth of experience in multiple things thing over just one or two." As for hobbies defining you, bear with me, this might sound cringe as the younger crowd puts it but hobbies to me are probably the worlds oldest form of that isekai genre that's gotten so big over the past few years as what hobbies essentially do is introduce you to a whole new world to explore and understand. Recently the rabbit hole I've been getting into is tea. A big favorite that's come out from my exploration was one called blue people which is pretty sweet on its own amazingly with nothing added. The shop I got it from told me supposedly the name 'blue people' was a translation error no one bothered to correct for thousands of years. Can't wait to see the new machine you teased near the end!

My sister decided to get into golf. Her husband got her a tee time at Pebble Beach through some connections. She ended up having such a meltdown on Hole 18 that she took a $1,200 set of clubs and threw them into the ocean. She went back to fighting games after that. I miss my sister.

I'm the same with hobbies. Gaming, specific techniques, control types etc. Lockpicking, using different pics, learning how locks really work. It could be a field of psychology or science, I'll read a couple dozen books about one topic. Martial arts or simply running. How do I run properly, what is the difference in running styles, what shoes work best for different terrains and why? I wish I could live forever, I would never be satisfied

Games were definitely an escape thing for me as a kid. Instead of doing math at school I prefered making new maps for friends in JJ2TSF :v I had them heavily limited to weekends only, so when I grew up it kinda became "why not" thing. But as I was also heavily into writing and reading, I started looking into games as another narrative nature. So if someone asked me, I would say my hobbies are creative writing, narration, animation (but only theory :v ), and games, with fighting games being a huge part of that. Glad to see those coffee vids are still a thing! It's how I found this channel and love them :D

I personally love hobbies that are less about collecting. I love mechanical keyboards, I love headphones, I love arcade controllers, but all of them have on thing in common: collecting masses and ending up using just one thing in each category.. have 5 keyboards? Awesome! Which of those 4 are collecting dust? Still super fun to nerd and talk about these things.. but the magic ends sooner or later. I gotta admit I still fall into the trap of sometimes making a purchase that gives me short term and sometimes even long term satisfaction, but not always. Now hobbies that just keep on giving, that's something else. Listening to music, making music (I love my piano so much, my God), art, sports, all of these examples differentiate themselves from the things I've mentioned first. You don't collect, you just do things and you often learn much more, meaningful skills too! That said. All hobbies are great, but I wanted to share my thoughts and preferences, because on the internet you often get pressured to buy so much stuff. There are hobbies that are almost free or just require one thing!

Learning about how things work and getting invested in a hobby is probably the most enjoyment we can have. Now of course you don't always have to dive in but be open and especially if people like what they do allow them to gush about it. My buddy is really into aquariums and aquascaping. To me personally I'm not super interested but I love hearing the ins and outs and to share some enjoyment even if it passes. It lifts up your friends and you learn something new.

This video spoke directly to me 😂 Currently rocking a Comandante X25 grinder, and just got a Handpresso to make espresso on the go. Absolutely love the process of hand-crafting coffee. At one point I really got into making Ocha, and got a nice quality Tetsubin and Kyusu. And this because I enjoyed the process more than the tea itself (still more of a coffee guy.) Fighting game gear, racing sim gear, flight sim gear, Go (weiqi) game stuff. I seem to rotate my "main" interest around every few weeks, but they all get some love eventually.

One of the 'simple' hobbies i picked up in 2018 was tetris, its just fitting 7 types of blocks into each other, so when watching Classic Tetris videos on youtube i thought it's something i could do too, but it was endlessly fascinating how each piece can be used to solve counter-intuitive problems to set up for the next several pieces, or in the case of modern multiplayer tetris, how players optimize their damage output while balancing survivability during as they clear out the garbage layers.

Thank you for sharing about your hobbies from the beginning. I hope we can learn more about coffee. Speaking of myself, I really like hardware/computers/arcade stuff. Hobbies make us happier people in this squared and boring world of ours.

I really enjoyed this video and hearing your point of view on hobbies. I wish that I could be someone that took a more active interest in hobbies as most of mine throughout my lifetime have been pretty passive. Because of this I am pretty weak at dealing with adversity in general, the first bit of resistance usually causes me to quit or slow down. This was fine for a long time but has actually started causing me quite a lot of mental anguish. It seems like hobbies for a lot of people that take an active or curious role in approaching them turn out to be a safe place to build up that adversity and willpower to push through to get to the deeper and more rewarding parts of the hobby. Hopefully I can try my best to develop this willpower and curiosity before it becomes too late in my life to do so.

I have a handful of hobbies that I put in rotation as I don't have the mental bandwidth, time available, or funding to have all of them active. I'm into photography, computers/video games, mechanical keyboards, and camping. All of the above are paused at the moment except for video games as I'm still playing/able to play after work (recently got back into Pokemon Go too). On the other hand, a childhood hobby I really liked but somehow gave up was drawing - always used to doodle on school documents, draw on my spare time, etc. As I grew up I found the last time I really was into it was college. I think with the advent of adult life I've found myself daydreaming and visiting my fantasy worlds, really using my imagination less and less... I've tried multiple times during the years to get back into it but it just never stuck.

Interesting perspective on why you enjoy hobbies. I'm not sure the REASON I try things is the complexity of a seemingly simple thing. I would argue that music does not seem simple at all. For me, it's the ability to express myself creatively. I find the things with endless combinations tend to pull me in the most. If there was only classical music, I would imagine I would get bored of music and move on pretty quickly, but the reason I started playing music is simply I enjoyed the creativity and could improvise and make something unique every single time. The same thing goes for chess, dance, gymnastics, and video games. They are all mediums with almost endless combinations that I can use to express myself creatively. Whether it seems simple or not, as long as I can be creative with it, I'll probably chase that rabbit hole.

I really like drip coffee and when I first started out back in 2020, it was exciting. I have 2 different grinders (my own cheap grinder and then an antique one my grandma had in the back) and 2 different methods of heating up milk for it (kettle and the cylinder machine). But now I'm finding it difficult to figure out how make coffee without tasting too bitter nowadays since I've gotten into a routine without thinking. It's a bit tough. But something I like to do is scout out coffee shops to see what it is about their coffee that makes it taste the way it does (besides the sugar syrup) and what kind of unique flavors i could add to it. Sometimes i like putting vanilla and cinnamon or crushed up fruit juice. Or even better, putting hot chocolate into the milk and then pouring into coffee. But if the dripped part of the brew is bad, then it falls apart. I still drink it, but I can't help but want it to taste better because of potential. I like that I was able to continue coffee making even if I struggle to have consistently good. As for another hobby I picked up that I haven't had much success with but still feel passionate about: I'm vocaloid fan that found that singing along and playing rhythm is not enough, so i picked up bass a couple years ago and did classes so I can start with foundation, but I have been very spotty about practicing due to time and motivation and life hitting me left and right. It's for sure a hobby you have to be more actively disciplined to even get around to playing what you want to play. I've never played an instrument before that but I always wanted to. So my first thought was "Bass will probably be easy enough to pick up and then i can go into guitar" and then that changed quickly once I learned its role in music playing. After that, I found myself listening to more of the bass parts of music and enjoying it more and began to search for more music that prominently features it or just find more music in general. To kind of alleviate my lack of playing though, I'm trying to learn how to read music sheets to songs I like to translate the notes into actual letters to be a bit more legible. It's pretty fun. It's still hard tho lol. but let me tell you, on top of hobbies, having a car you love and want to keep alive and then finding out about Initial D really fuels that desire to go down the rabbit hole of wanting to learn more about cars and learning what you like and how you want to maintain what you have. And i can never shut up about my car when it gets brought up

@@NihongoGamer Here's something that'll be a nice option for when you make coffee! Nanaimo Bars (I'm Canadian and these are a staple in most Canadian households as they're SUPER easy to make and if you have basically just a kitchenette and not a lot of space, you can still bake them), as for watches, they aren't as expensive a hobby as you'd think. For example on the cheap side of things you could build a collection of just Casio watches. Both from the non G-Shock line and the G-Shock lines. It would also cover everything you might need. On the middle end of the spectrum you could focus on micro brands and Seiko's in the $200 - $800 range. Which if you're in that price bracket also opens you up to entry level Swiss stuff like Hamilton, Tissot, Frederique Constant.

but i think we can all agree that the thing stopping us from exploring a hobby further is money Gear is expensive You can explore it with videos but it does not really give the same experience as when you actually do it yourself

The best way to grind coffee is to do it manually, because the grinder can be tuned manually in a way that every grain will grind the same way. Machines have the risk of grinding the coffee evenly and even burn the grains. There a channel called Flat & White that explains this in full details and so many more things that people tend to do the "wrong" way. The only problem is that is in Spanish hehe, but maybe they'll have Eglish subs.

I have the exact same espresso machine and I've been wondering if there would be a notable difference if I upgraded for a very long time. Looking forward to your next video, will the upgrades be worth it?

I recently got into the coffee rabbit hole myself and it actually started with turkish coffee SO I bought myself a cezve, [actually i bought three of them, one I gave to the staff room at my school, the other one is for bigger cups of turkish coffee and one for smaller doses] turkish coffee, I bought three kinds of turkish coffee, pre ground because I didn't have a grinder at the time. Then recently I went to the store and found that they have a coffee grinder there, the staff showed me how to use it and I grounded my first bag of turkish coffee there [they have turkish coffee grind size] it tasted good Then I was looking into getting myself a moka pot because in the staff office, I used to make coffee on different coffee machines, electric drip coffee machine and a moka pot and I liked it. Then I bought myself a cheap 12 euro coffee hand grinder and whole beans so I can enjoy fresh coffee with it [it can make turkish coffee too but the resulting cup seems to be too light for my tastes, it's probably because of the light roast cofffee I use, I am not sure, I will experiment some more once I get more money for different roasts] and then yesterday I put my coffee bean bag in the freezer because I heard if you freeze coffee beans then you can preserve the freshness better. Hopefully my next step will be to buy freshly roasted coffee because I saw in a James Hoffman video that the coffee in the store is not fresh and that you have better luck at getting freshly roasted coffee at coffee shops Now it's looking into specialty coffee and coffee taste testing and pour overs and aeropress and a french press [I used one at the school office there too, I tried to follow the instructions of a youtube video on making a tastier cup of french press with less grit but I got interrupted by my teacher] I don't have the funds to buy all that stuff right now but hopefully as time goes on, I will be able to own some more coffee stuff and make different types of cups with these tools and gear. [One thing that excites me the most is that my teacher says he may have an old moka pot that he doesnt use anymore that he can give me, that would be cool] Now all my low knowledge of coffee comes from youtube videos and youtube videos of James Hoffman explaining coffee. Let's not forget those youtube shorts with all the fancy cool coffee bar that I like to watch just because.

Sorry if someone else already asked this, but have you ever tried making coffee with a Moka or a Neapolitan? Here in Italy practically everyone has one. Have a nice day :)
