He was showing racism. He doesn't have a fully informed understanding of this topic so his ignorance showed up a bit as racism. He could just asked why are all of these people bleaching their skin? He was trying to show that it's not just white people so he should have led the conversation with that. It's not a topic that black Americans can give consistent information on. I have never heard or met a black American who bleaches their skin except MJ, and we clown him without mercy. That's where the conversation could have taken a bite.

The issue with society is that we try to shy away from everything, skin, cultures, race and beliefs... instead what we need to do is start doing is opening up to one another about how they feel and making others understand that we're all human and should respect one another and be willing to accept each other.

Cause in China, darker skin = more time outside (in rice paddy) working = lower social class (Generally speaking)
@mysterious2007damn
@mysterious2007damn 5 жыл бұрын
@veryverygentle Majority of people in society were from the lower class though so how logical is that? Even today the wealthiest in our society are the 1%, and how much darker could a person of the same race get? The max would be a few shades difference, not enough to cause such a disdain for "dark skin" Do you really think the only factor separating lower class from upper class was just skin colour? Most lower class farmers wouldn't even interact with upper class people and vice versa. If a person working in the field just stayed indoors and got "lighter" would that allow them to fit in with the upper classes? This "dark people worked in the fields" excuse seems like bullshit. I feel that the real reason is that there are several different ethnic groups in China and the darker ones were seen as inferior to the lighter ones.

Also, racism and colourism are not the same thing. Rather, colourism is an offshot of racism based on preferences and advantages given to lighter ( closer to white) skin tones among communities of colour. Depends on where you live in Egypt. I'm Syrian not Egyptian, but from what I know about Egypt, the south is where you find the dark folks who are mostly indigenous Nubians, but in the north near the Mediterranean sea, most people are somewhere between middle eastern (i.e. medium brown) to "southern European" white (kinda like Ramy Malek), and in rare cases really white, almost Nordic skin tone (most likely descendants of Circassians, Albanians, Chechens and various other white Muslims who immigrated or fled to Egypt when it was part of the Ottoman empire). I think she's not from the south so that explains what she said. Modern Egyptians are a mixture of different ethnicities and races, esp in the big cities like Cairo and Alexandria, so the majority of people there are not very dark. Hope this explains it.

This is a really touchy subject for most people. The plain truth is the darker the skin tone, the less desirable it is world over. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m simply stating how things are. Wish it weren’t this way, but there is a lot a hate thrown toward those with darker skins. Very unfortunate coz they can’t do anything to change it. Almost all of Asia prefers light or white skin, dark people are completely undesirable. Most brown people from Middle East & South Asia strongly prefer light skin, but not white. Although they do prefer white skin to dark but between white & a super light brown they’ll prefer the latter! Even among most black people theres a clear preference for the lighter skinned black people. This is just how things are. This is why skin lightening/skin bleaching products are so common among black & brown people. Hopefully as we all continue to get more enlightened on the issue the biases will be minimized!

Angie Doe I completely agree with you and am a dark skinned person from India, people would say its coz of colonialism and media , nop its not, light skinned people are a rarity if you consider the world as a whole and so people tend to revere them more ( rare, out of this world looking people) . End of it. How much (people) want to look down on dark skinned people and what measures they adopt to do that is upto individuals personality. As you said hope people can find a grey area in this matter but let me say as a dark skinned person , an olive skinned person is what I find attractive. And no please don't tell to me its because of media or the aftermath of colonialism. Your comment is fantastic BTW.

Why won’t those people talk? None of the students knew anything. This is still a huge taboo for those people, that they don’t know how to act? In Brazil (where I am from, but I live here in the US), and there is an actual name for every shade of tan to very dark skin which sucks because we shouldn’t call people or separate them by “color”. People just avoid talking when they should so we could put all these prejudices behind.

This professor is trying to convey that racism or colorism isn't just prevelant in the Western world, you see it in various degrees throughout different cultures. Although that may be true today, he doesn't explain why. Western Colonialism used racism and forced colorism in many of the societies that were colonized by Europeans hence why to this day there is a preference for lighter skin tones. We now live in a legally equal society, where your skin color or your race no longer determines your rights or status. However, socially speaking, color does matter. Hollywood and the Western Mainstream media reaches audiences the world over perpetuating the myth of white superiority with white or light skinned actors. Dark skinned peoples are vilified while light skinned people are depicted as saviors. Hollywood even even Whitewashes ancient cultures and civilizations that were made up of dark people. Is it any wonder why the people of these same cultures have a preference for lighter skin tones? The difference between the European Colonialism of the past centuries and today is that you no longer have to colonize countries, you can colonize their minds through mass media.
@TVwriter23

ancient times were Europeans dark skinned. It's actually pretty recently that they became lighter. Even then it was diverse. I still remember folks upset that Gwen was a woman of color in Merlin. Some had to write a paper explaining that there were people of various races in Britain during that time. Hollywood is just not good to go by when it comes to history. The John Wayne movie Tomahawk just google Tomahawk 1951 and James Beckwourth www.google.com/amp/s/www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1993-07-25-9307250172-story,amp.html Yup in cultures where dark skin is preferred (and there are some) you see lighter people trying to tan. Also if you have say a white person for example living in an all black, all Asian etc. community that person is going to want to look like the people there. Especially if they are kids. This despite the beauty standards of the media. We don't hang around Brad Pit, Bey, Saif Khan eyc. We hang out with everyday folks. Look at the white man who had cosmetic surgery to look Korean. Dude had 10 surgeries

In the Black culture usually light skinned females/males are looked upon and glorified because of their skin color or their so called “good hair” Being a darker skinned female I’ve witnessed conversations about boys (Most of the boys were dark skinned) personal feelings/opinions about light skinned females. They would always talk about how they wanted a light skinned girl because they’re not “ghetto” or because they’re just overall “prettier” than dark skinned girls they would also say that dark skinned females are overall just “ugly” and are dark “in the wrong spots” (Private Area). This situation is also somewhat vice versa because, I personally know females who think the same way about light skinned boys with the “good” curly hair that u can braid and etc and shame the dark skinned boys as well. Just overall dark skinned men/women won’t marry a person who are of the same complexion like them because of the simple fact that they are scared of the outcome....that outcome contributing in a baby that simply looks like them. Throughout my whole life all I’ve heard is “I want a light skinned baby, because they gone have that good good hair and Imma marry some one out side of my race to achieve this goal of mine” from both genders and it not only makes me but other women/men of a darker skin tone feel UNWANTED!! Most of the time this situation is within an household...but that’s a whole nother story.

I will give you my two cents after watching this. I graduated with a LA/S degree from a nationally - slightly - above average rated college in a major metropolitan city.....quite some time ago, though not really that far back. Imagine a time when the turmoil in this country was nowhere near what it is now and has been on the decline every since (and I am speaking from a Fiscal standpoint). Keep in mind, there was a "Golden Era" in between it, which I don't believe will ever come back. Ask yourself, I am and/or my parents are helping pay tuition until graduation. Now some, albeit very few, get a full ride, but remember (all of the not so fortunate) that the big day will arrive, you will hopefully graduate with excellent grades, get that piece of paper, land yourself a fantastic job that is going to offer you a position of your dreams, along with a paycheck that will allow you to rent a decent apartment (a studio or efficiency, unless you want to live with a minimum of 2 + people). I can guarantee you that if you have debt from any Collegiate Institution, the bill + interest will be in your folks sweaty hands before you get home for payment. College is great and a necessity, but it comes with a hefty price tag now and the job arena really sucks. I will leave everyone with this, the "real" life version of when you graduate and oh, if you are jumping right away to graduate school thereafter, without any VERY crystal plan of THE job you will get as well as the pay, brace yourself, because you will be working for countless years thereafter to pay off "The University of Bank" think of it as one entity that is overly lucrative, but just enough to open accounts in places such as Switzerland, Gibraltar, Greenland, etc where enough cash is coming in and there are perks for being accepted through those doors and the entrance fee is very large. Long story short, I eventually got a job in Finance and have been in this role ever since because at the end of the day, "it pays". If your plan is to become a Shrink, Librarian, Human Resources, Actor, and even a Lawyer, you had better be an undiscovered Einstein, because the world is oversaturated with said people. If I went back to school to advance my undergrad and signed up for a class with a professor who would conduct an Introductory course as seen here, I would quietly bolt for the exit either half or three quarters out, walk down to admissions, drop the class right away, and sign up for a tangible one. It is 2019, not 1980, nor even 1990. I see nothing of any value presented here that would justify spending any green on.

I went into the KZfaq black hole and found these videos. Honestly, this video made me cringe. It makes no sense that everyone is acting shy as if someone is speaking another language to them. This class seems to be trying to open up the conversation of ethnic relations and how we experience trials and tribulations within them. I bet if you went on each of their social media accounts, there would be more interaction then face to face. If i was in this class, I would be participating in every activity, opening up a wider conversation and not regretting it. I'm surprised how in 2019, the conversation is feeling so forced.

This lecturer is basically saying that all races can be racist? Damn, actually racism is a white thing and their thoughts and opinions are superior in this world to the point that even the victims start to form their opinions after them. I am South Asian and I agree with the fact that lighter skin is a preference there without a doubt. But as August said, black is black, the darkness of the skin tone does'nt matter to a certain point. If there is a white person and a hispanic person and the white person just is naturally darker than the hispanic, the average white parent would still want their child to coose the white person. This shows that racism is not based solely on skin colour. It is based on white supremacy.

I am a 30 year old indian man from the northern parts. And I can openly say that men and women alike are more liked when they have paler skin tone. Of course the preference for paler skin has got weaker and weaker. It was a lot more discriminating two decades ago. Also India has a lot of cultures in it. Every culture has its own preference passed down from generation to generation. I even think that increasing cross cultural interaction would let this bias dissolve faster.

Darker skin meant u are out in the sun working. Lighter skin meant you are rich enough to be inside your house and keep your skin pale. The USA story was different and thats why Americans fail to see why other cultures prefer lighter skin.

I wish more participation from the students was offered. Some key points were touched on, but the ultimate message was not reflected . I also felt like the professor was somehow misleading in his statement about " its only racism if imposed by a white person , but termed as colourism , which is implied by him as less harmful , if a person of colour discriminates. I strongly disagree with this point .Being considered a dark skinned Indian woman myself, I have faced discrimination from not only white people but also people from my own race. You don't really "fit" in anywhere so to speak as you're constantly resenting yourself for not being or reaching the "standard " you're supposed to be. As a child you don't necessarily notice something so small as skin colour , but during my teenage years it really affected the way I look at not only myself but other people. I became hyper aware of my skin colour on a daily basis. Being a woman in the Indian culture , you're supposed to have extremely fair skin as it is considered beautiful due to the fact that it emulates the ideal Bollywood actresses we're exposed to . In light of this , many of us with dark skin look to bleaching creams to solve our problems , cause of not only what we see in media , but in real life. The lighter skinned girls seem to get more attention from the guys, which seems to be a main source of validation. All in all , colorism is not a term of less impact just because brown people excercise it. Its people from your own race inflicting more discrimination upon you with racism already in play. Colourim stems from colonialism . The European standard of beauty is deemed the ideal.

Joanne Cummings I know that it looks healthy and beautiful , but the truth is is that colorism sways people to think otherwise. I know of plenty black girls including myself who’ve been told to” stay out of the sun or you’ll get too dark” kind of comments. Most people don’t see it as a beneficial or beautiful thing, but see it as “getting burnt”. The people in the video were acting clueless as to what the reality is, when this affects all dark skin people in some way, whether that be through peers or family, most black people will experience something like this.
