How do you like them apples? Don't worry, we're staying on this side of the Atlantic this evening, for a walk around the original town of Boston - which is steeped in riveting history at every turn. Enjoy this walk around the town centre of Boston (Lincolnshire)!

What an immense joy it was, for me to come across this video. Thank you so very much. My 10th Great Grandfather John Cheney, was buried there March 16, 1623. His son John is my 9th Great Grandfather, who came to America in 1635 and helped establish the town of Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was one of the Puritans you mentioned, that came to the New World. Once this Pandemic is over, it is my hearts desire to visit Boston, England and walk the paths of my ancestors, and possibly locate his grave.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and found it an interesting link to your fascinating family history! I can imagine many people in North America can trace their heritage back to Boston in Lincolnshire, and I hope you have a great time when you visit to find his grave in future :)

I have watched your walkabout time and time again, and so many of the shops now there weren't around when i was a kid. So many of what i remember has gone (Oldrids, Woolworths, Morely Sports, Freeman, Hardy and Willis, Salters newsagent, Clarks shoe shop, The Golden Dragon etc) to name but a few, but WH Smith, Dawson the butchers, Boots, Tates the fish and chip shop are still there. I just cannot remember what was there in many cases before the present incumbents. I also remember Burnetts a little blue model shop jist across the railway line on the left, i checked streetview and wasn't surprised it was gone. Sad and happy memories, i really wish i had a tardis if only to visit for an hour. Cheers, thanks again for taking the effort to do a great vid.

your video is great because not only boston, lincolnshire itself is often underwritten by journalists, self called commentators and the likes, and then when one travels to that distinct portion of england discovers a lot of history, world class architecture, immense skies and plenty of relevant, awesome towns scattered all around. Stamford is awesome as are Woodhall Spa, Brant Broughton or Lincoln itself. THX

Absolutely! I'd never been to Boston before visiting to film this video - but I must say I was fascinated by all the history dotted around the town, and as you say towns further afield and the wider region in general is all full of riveting heritage :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

It certainly does! I lived here very briefly in 2019 into very little of 2020 and am kicking myself that I didn't explore more of this history saturated town. An interesting fact about the Pescod Hall is that, it was moved a few metres back from its original position. I can't remember when but my friend who lived in Boston for quite some time told me the fact and she also purchases a table from the Pescod Hall when it was a furniture shop.

Boston is currently undergoing some restoration and heritage projects and certain shops within the market place and down dolphin lane, and later on within the year or so there will be even more shops going under restoration to transform them back to their former glory from years ago. Oldrids is also said to be occupied soon. I’m not sure when you will visit Boston again but hopefully there will be lots of great changes for when you next do👍👍 nice video

Thank you so much - that's very interesting to hear! As you mention Boston certainly had quite a former glory back in the day, and I'm glad to hear more restoration and heritage projects are going on, there's so much to discover in Boston, and not too many people know about it :) I look forward to returning in the future! Thank you so much for watching and for your informative comment - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

@@LetsWalkUK Yes definitely, i often find it sad how Boston has lost a lot of its glory. But at the same time... around 4 buildings are currently under going restoration to give them a 1930s kind of look. After this there will be more to do soon do I hope the the majority of shops around the market place will be completely transformed🤞 I hear there are a lot more plans for more shops to be transformed. I also can’t wait to find out which business opens in oldrids considering oldrids was a very big and great shop and it’s sad that it closed before you came here. Hopefully that huge building will become occupied this summer or autumn. Someone has also just bought the old abandoned post office near the park so let’s this spectacular building returns to how it was before. It will be great if you come back one day and can see a real difference. Thank you again for the great video and kind reply! 😁

@@Thomas-ok9ot That's all fantastic to hear - I often visit towns with their heritage fully on display but I don't know the story of how that itself came to be! Boston seems to be doing an excellent job at it from what you say, and it's so good to know, because there really is so much to the town :) I'm definitely looking forward to returning and seeing all the changes when they come!

Nice to see that Boston looks like it's doing well commercially. Obviously this was filmed 🎥 on a Sunday am when shops are closed but the majority look like they're still in business, unlike many English Town centres which are shuttered ghost towns. There look like a couple here and there are closed, but that's probably normal turnover. Other Lincolnshire towns and Lincoln itself seem to be doing well. I'm pleased about that. It looks like Lincolnshire is slowly 🐌 beginning to get the recognition and tourism it deserves. It is a beautiful and very historic county. The medieval Bishop of Lincoln was the richest in England 🇬🇧 bar Canterbury itself. During the 15th century Boston was England's second wealthiest port after London and it was a member of the Hanseatic League. Unfortunately a Boston merchant got into dispute and fight with a German trader in one of the German ports. Swords were drawn and the German was killed. Monetary compensation was demanded but the Boston merchants' Council refused to pay. Boston was ejected from the League and subsequently its Port declined and never regained its previous wealth and importance. This story I read on one of the town centre tourist information boards.

Just outside Boston on the banks of the river Witham is a grassy area with information boards and as I remember picnic benches etc I was there in winter on an icy cold day. It is significant because it was an embarkation point for a group of Pilgrims prior to 1620 who sailed to Holland. James I had made it illegal to leave the country without a royal permit. The Pilgrims made arrangements with a Dutch sea captain who sailed up the Witham and collected them secretly. They then sailed to Holland where they set up a puritan community in the Dutch Republic which was more tolerant than Jacobean England. They didn't manage to settle very well there and finally moved, joining the groups going to Massachussets. Again, I read the story on the Riverside information board. Well worth a visit if in Boston. An important and relevant site in terms of American history.
