I met Mark in Pismo Beach, CA in 1989 when I was 18 years old. I was driving through town on a motorcycle road trip and stumbled upon him filming a movie there. It was super late at night after they had finished shooting and there wasn't a single person around except him and me just chatting on the side of the road by my bike for a few moments. It was the most pleasant exchange you could hope for considering I knew every line and sound effect from Star Wars, word for word since I was a little kid. He thought it was way cool I was driving my 1978 Honda Goldwing down the coast staying in KOAs and having the time of my life. He asked me where I was from and I proudly told him "Walla Walla, Washington." He shot right back with: "There's a lot of alliteration in that!" One of my favorite memories.

I've listened to Hamill speak before, but not when he was younger. I get the feeling that of the big three (Hamill, Harrison, and Fisher), Hamill was developed beyond his years, so self-assured, well-spoken, and insightful. Love watching these old interviews.

He was just 32 years old at the time and it´s clear that Star Wars had been both a blessing and a curse in his life. As Carrie Fisher used to say, "I have to pay George Lucas 5 bucks every time I look at the mirror".

A curse? Mark’s got to play two of the most popular characters of our time - Luke and Joker. Not ever actor is so lucky in their life to be so loved and to have their name engraved forever in pop culture.

@mishynaofficial That kind of accolade doesn’t even sustain the most virulent narcissist indefinitely. Can you imagine going through your life being solely identified for something that occurred in your youth, and that truly isn’t representative of your identity at all, independent of your vocation? It’s not as if he truly have something to humanity that was valuable, like a novel, scientific advancement, etc. He portrayed a fictional character in a movie. That sort of legacy is completely useless.

It's really interesting to hear Mark Hamill be so brutally honest about how his success with Star Wars was a double-edged sword, and how much of the industry still looked down on special effects-driven blockbusters in 1983, even with all the success that films like Jaws, ET, Raiders and Star Wars had attained by that point. You would never hear an actor talk like that these days, as everyone now has a small army of corporate-approved PR minders and is told exactly what to say in interviews ("such an honor to be part of Star Wars", "I've been a Marvel fan since I was a little kid!").

Lucas had it all planned out from the get-go. I had a friend back then that was a super Star Wars nerd -- not a simple thing in 1977-78 -- and I can remember him telling me all about it and how the original movie was actually Ep 4 ... and then after Empire comes out, lo and behold, Star Wars re-releases start to show "EPISODE IV" at the beginning of the scroll.

I am pretty sure Lucas had a better idea for a sequel trilogy than whatever Disney did. Lucas the kind of guy to always go forward, which is why the Prequels are so different visually from the Original Trilogy, then you have Disney doing nothing but nostalgia pandering with the visuals from the OG. Pure ridiculous.

The talk of people never seeing Star Wars reminds me of a cartoon that came out when the first film became a huge hit. It has an old couple facing each other in chairs. The wife says "You know, I think we're only two people in the world who haven't seen Star Wars". Then the husband takes out a gun and shoots his wife and says "Now, I'm the only one".

@@johnschlaefflin2100 It's a fun, entertaining picture, to be sure. He was also in a good WWII epic called The Big Red One. I remember him talking about it on, I think, the Merv Griffin Show, when it came out. It was like the first thing he did after The Empire Strikes Back, and I remember he said the movie was "as far from Star Wars as you can get", meaning that it was a "serious film about WWII" as opposed to being a "popcorn movie" (as he describes Star Wars here).
