We need more people like the Carters. President and Mrs. Carter returned to their hometown after his term in office was complete, to live in the same modest home they lived in previously (the last previous president to do so was Harry Truman). They’ve spent their golden years giving back to the community. Their kids seemingly have not tried to capitalize on dad’s fame in order to line their pockets, and they’ve stayed out of the spotlight. They have set a fine example for others to follow.

RIP to one of the most intelligent, kind and loving first ladies ever in Rosalynn Carter, champion of mental health issues and who worked side by side with Pres. These dozen minutes with Amy Carter and four with her mom show how genuinely wonderful Rosalynn Carter was both as a public figure and as a parent. That combination was just as hard back then as it is today. It's also clear why Amy is there from the smile on her face when looking at Dave and from the timing of her laughter at his jokes and the joy in Rosalynn's voice when she says Amy is Letterman's number-one-fan.

@@KathleenPriem-xl7lp You're correct, it was all part of the "October Surprise" that Bu$h 41 (as the G0P VP nominee in the fall of '80) helped engineer. Carter was close to negotiating the hostages' release by unfreezing Iranian assets held in US banks. Bu$h, representing the Reagan team, took it a step further by promising Iran weapons (to be used in their war against Iraq) that would be secretly funneled through Israel, in exchange for Iran delaying the hostages' release until after Reagan was sworn in. This not only ensured that Carter wouldn't be able to get the hostages freed before the November election - essentially guaranteeing Reagan's victory - but it set the stage for the Iran-Contra affair a number of years later. It's so f**king bizarre that David Letterman's KZfaq channel has become the #1 source for me finding out about celebrity deaths. Like 90% of the time this is how I discover someone's died.

Not so bizarre- podcasts replay celebrity interviews on their passing. Check your source of current events regularly-

You know I was just looking for this interview after seeing Dave and Al meet the former president and couldn’t find it. It’s a shame I’ve now found it under these circumstances

I can’t believe how much she looks like her dad. That was funny about the windowsill. Girl had to leave her mark.

I was 19 when this aired. I was in college, we were in the Great Recession, and times were simpler.
