I was a massive Kanye West fan for years and I have some complicated feelings about the man. In this video I explore parasocial relationships and separating the person from the artist while going through my entire history as a Kanye fan. While I do still enjoy the music I would not call myself a Kanye West fan anymore.
I do not condone hate of any kind and any do not support any hateful comments made by Kanye in this video.

Its always sad to see how people laugh at Kanye doing crazy stuff and then write it off as mentally ill, but then the moment it becomes offensive they call him hateful and a bigot rather than mentally ill. He is mentally ill, and instead of acknowledging it, people only laugh until it became offensive.

I do agree that people should care more before bigotry but mental illness does not cause or excuse bigotry

no matter what he does or how he acts out, kanye is and always will be my favorite music artist, bar none. i separate the art from the artist and kanyes music won't be topped, not anytime soon

His post-Pablo tendency to tweak and change songs after release has gone haywire. Vultures 1 and 2 is full of mediocre, half-baked songs.

Thanks for the personal video, hope it was a bit therapeutic for you. I hope it's okay if i share my own version of your path. I was a fan of Kanyé, although i had a much more conventional Hip Hop path compared to yours, previously idolizing Dr. Dre, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Eminem and the likes. Kanyé struck me as a breath of fresh air in a music genre that became more standardized and corporatized, and less artistic (it felt). He was different, and could not be put in a box as you explained. His persona was so big, for me as a listener it could not be separated from his music. I can listen to an R.Kelly song, and not think of R.Kelly. I can see a Harvey Weinstein movie and not even know he was involved. Can't really do that with Kanyés songs. Before the disappointment of having to "let go" of Kanyé (as you phrase it), i already had a similar experience with Micheal Jackson as a little kid, although that was much less intense, because of the possible deniability. There is no denying Kanyé lost the plot, he is self absorbed, ignorant and doesn't use his intellect and talent for good, hence he is not a good human in most senses of the word. He is a victim too, but he is not free from responsibility. Such a damn shame. Though for me it started earlier. My father bought me "Graduation" as a gift when it released, and i learned of Kanyés "controversial" public outbursts when he accused president George Bush of not caring about black people. I would maybe not phrased it the same way, but since the administrations Katrina response was a disgrace, i was not bothered by this comment at all, for all i cared, George junior had it coming. After that though, it went downhill. Confidence is good and all, but Kanyé was always a bit much, and since it became worse slowly, i was somewhat prepared. As silly as it sounds, when Kanyé came onto the stage at Taylor Swift award announcement to praise Beyoncé, i immediately felt there is something wrong with him, it wasn't just bluster and self importance, this felt like a peak under the surface of a deeply unwell person. It was too odd to be a premeditated publicity stunt, and even though it seemed like the media hype was overblown, my alarm bells were going off, and i braced myself for future disappointments, and decided then and there, i did not like him anymore. So the more recent controversies of his were blunted, and the disappointment did not hit so hard, as it maybe did for you. Still listen to his music though, i can't help it.

I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharing your own story. I really appreciate you sharing all that here in your comment. I think part of me knew Kanye was always going to get bad but I never imagined it would go so far. I guess I learned my lesson.

Graduation came out at the beginning of my senior year of high school. I loved and love that album (except Barry Bonds). Def has a different feeling now, but his music can be broken into thirds, withe the first third being College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation. I love these first three.

That doc was partialy showing the reality. The part where he was taken advantage of, of the heads of the industry, shows the reality. And th3 fact that he created a grudge against them is understandable, he is far from the only one.

I'm shocked that this channel has less than 1000 subscribers. Wish you the best on KZfaq. It's incredible how you described your parasocial relationship in a way, I could totally relate to you. I agree that It is very hard to admit ignorance of someone you admire, but sometimes it's important to split the human from its ideas e.t.c. I also tried to prove, that Kanye is innocent and all the words his said are just ripped from the context, but I think its time to stop. I can enjoy his music without agreeing with him. Thank you for this video.

My friend called me ignorant for criticizing Kanye for his unhinged views and choice to spew racism and pro-Hitler stuff. According to my misguided friend, it's all for show so I shouldn't take him seriously, and he's a genius, and he's also being taken advantage of all at the same time. I lost a friend in 2020 over a dumb argument we had about him wanting to vote for Kanye, and now I'm losing another friend because he's defending Kanye's nazi arc and it makes me uncomfortable.

I get this feeling, my brother and I are huge Kanye fans since around 2015/16, but I have always been of the opinion his genius only encompassed music and branding (hence his business success until the backlash for the Defcon3 tweets). I do still often listen to his music despite knowledge of his actions, first because his music brings out the best in me and also reflected his better side.
