Full conversation with Magnus Carlsen: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZsB_ZZt_2dHbp4U.html Quick note from Lex: The camera on Magnus died 20 minutes in. Most folks still just listen to audio-only version, but here on KZfaq we did our best to still make it interesting to watch & listen by adding image overlays. I mess things up sometimes, like in this case, and it hits me hard when I do. I'm sorry for this. I'm always working hard to improve. I hope you understand. Thank you for your patience and support along the way. I love you all.

I'm sure Garry, at the time, would've felt better knowing Magnus would go onto becoming one of the greatest chess players over all time.

Well, Garry did give Magnus a leg up to become the greatest one, right people? Maybe he would become the greatest on his own, but you never know.

Garry was better so no need to feel better drawing against someone you’re better than. Even now at peak Magnus strength Garry can claim to be better

It reminds me of how Vitalik Buterin, when telling Lex about crypto scams, casually mentioned the exact second in a youtube video when the bitconnect guy yells "BITCONEEEEECT!!!"

There might be an interesting piece of context here: Whatever the actual games were like back then - there was a rather sensationalist news story on it, that you can still easily find on KZfaq (including knowledgeable comments on how it is wrong). It depicts what happened as if Kasparov struggled badly against this chess child prodigy. Which, of course, makes an entertaining story (just as they say at the end of this video).

I find it more interesting to watch with that short video clips showing what they are talking about. I know its because of the camera died. But its just more fun.

Reading The Black Swan by Nassim Taleb, as he explains how we are terrible at predictions, and then we're magnificent at lying to ourselves once randomness happens. Video struck a cord.

I think that's too much of a generalization though. A lot of prodigies turn out great. Of course there are a lot of misses as well, but I disagree with Magnus on this. It's pretty clear when someone has a chance to be very special. It doesn't always pan out, but it does more often than people assume in the very special cases like Magnus. If you go to the wiki page of the youngest grandmasters in history at various points, that list is filled with top 20 players, world champions, world championship challengers and world championship candidates. And a couple in this generation are on their way there too.

I'm a bit confused listening to this. Lex seems to be positioning this as Kasparov lost to Magnus, when Kasparov won two of the three and the third was a draw. Carlsen didn't win any of the three games. Is it simply that drawing to a 13-year-old is that embarrassing, and is therefore viewed as a loss?
@benjaminrice9551
@benjaminrice9551 Жыл бұрын
More-or-less, yes. Kasparov is considered to be one of the best players ever, if not the greatest player ever, to draw to a child (in chess) would be considered a loss.

Don't listen to the people who clearly know nothing about chess. You can obviously not compare it to Basketball 1v1 because it was a rapid match, which means that the time control is shorter and so there is less time for finding the best possible moves. It's impressive nonetheless but Kasparov would have mopped the floor with Carlsen at this age every time in a classical match, in a rapid match the skill difference is usually smaller
