I love when he says something like "if your opponent plays a move you didn't expect, you know it's probably not a great move" haha. If my opponents plays a move I didn't expect, I am toast.

@@oziomaogbe8665 No, games before engines were oftentimes played over two days or more Edit: it's an oversimplification and the time spent may be somewhat equal sometimes to the Magnus game but it's not the longest ever classical chess game in terms of moves nor length.

@@NeaEmrys No, you’re mistaken. The longest tournament chess game (in terms of moves) is 269 moves (Nikolic-Arsovic, Belgrade 1989). The game ended in a draw after over 20 hours of play.

Just to clear things up. It was not the longest classical chess game ever but the longest World Chess Championship game. The longest classical game was Ivan Nikolic vs Goran Arsovic, Belgrade, 1989. 269 moves and it took over 20 hours

So because his opponents have become so computer-focused, he takes them on a crazy human ride to shake off every computerbased countermove that they have planed or thought off. In my mind, that ability is what makes humans more intelligent than computers.
@TheAluvisify

Not quite. Every top player is still very "human." They know how to evaluate human positions vs. computer positions, and they know what a "human move" vs a "computer move" looks like. It just happens that Magnus is better at it.

magnus is great at soundbites, but when lex asks "Is evaluation at every step the key to winning?", Magnus responds "To some extent", but doesn't reveal what the secret is. That is part of the "loneliness" at being at the top. You cannot reveal your secrets.

The MCAT is about 8 hours. Step exams are about the same length. Studying in medical school is about 7-10 hours a day everyday Monday through Sunday on regular semesters. Physicians work 100+ hours a week sometimes. Next time you go to the doctor just think how hard he or she has worked to get there. They have had extremely long days so that you can be taken care of that day.
