I don't know. I still think they were set out making a serious movie, and went overboard with all the self-jokes and meta points. Besides the above is "just a theory". Another strong theory is that the Wichowski's have lost the plot themselves. Anyone changing their gender identity must be undergoing big mental changes, and there is a certainty that it affects your thinking (ie Creativity, Decision Making, Consistency, etc etc).

So, the studio wants to remake your hit movie from the 90s with or without you. What do you do? A) Turn down the job and let someone else ruin your legacy. B) Accept the job and ruin your own legacy to spite the studio and the audience. C) Accept the job and make a great movie, if you still have the chops. They didn't choose Option C because they didn't have the talent anymore. The Waschowski brothers were a one-hit-wonder. They made one great movie, two lukewarm sequels, chopped their dicks off and then disappeared into the sad world of Hollywood has-beens.

The theory makes perfect sense. In fact when Steven Spielberg made ET he immediately wrote a sequel. It was so awful that it was scrapped right away. It eventually came out that this was done on purpose because Spielbergs contract called for a sequel idea. He did not want this movie to be made so he purposely wrote such a bad story that no producer would green light the idea.

I think the conflicting view comes from the conflict of what the movie really is. Those expecting a serious sequel to the series are gonna be massively disappointed. But when you realize it's a giant FU to the studio who wanted them to bring back all the characters for a cash grab it's brilliant, as it's just enough to make stupid studio executives think it will be good because it checks off all the boxes and they have no sense of taste so they green light it.

I feel like they'd be better off remaking the first one, except cleaning up the parts that are extremely lazily written. Y'know, making like 100 matrix movies doesn't actually make up for lazy writing. As an actual fully hashed out culture, the first movie is just piggybacking off New York City from the year it was filmed. Even the most basic motivation for the machine AI overlord villains doesn't make any real sense. It's almost like the machines were supposed to want people for their souls, but then they realized that trying to make sense of that would require far too much depth into the actual nature of the actual relationship between man and AI, so they just dumbed it down for autistic psychotic egomaniacs. Apparently, people in VR gaming comas produce more electricity than the most advanced power plants, and we're just supposed to accept that like it doesn't deserve some kind of clarification. Is it a metaphor for transcendental infinity? Suuure; who cares? That's the attitude these writers had when designing this story. It's just lazy; meant for lazy audiences. It's like if you're trying to jerk off to Brave New World and The Terminator simultaneously. You feel smart for contemplating the themes, but no thinking takes place.
@SalohcinQE
@SalohcinQE 15 сағат бұрын
You're actually harping on another point of stuff that was not the writer's fault. The original idea was for humans to be used for their processing power, not their power generation. The studio thought that was too confusing and made them change it. It's literally an example of how the studio has been fucking with this franchise from the very first movie. Which is probably why this time they finally had enough and just decided to troll them and make something that they couldn't continue to make a franchise out of. You literally cited the most famous example I've ever heard of of studio interference making a movie dumber.

It was a dogshit movie that I could write essays on. For starters it's fucking criminal that it didn't get a Premium Large Format release, nevermind the fact that matrix 4 wasn't in 4d. The budget? Omfg where did it go??? Last I checked it had double the budget of Titanic. The core principles and ideology? Completely abandoned. There was one singular cool moment in the movie and it was the reveal of Io/new Zion. Apart from that it legit felt like a made for TV remake in the same vein as the Rush Hour TV show. I believe it was bad on purpose, but not to stick it to the studio. It was bad on purpose to shit on all the people who loved the movie, to spite the fans - because the creators hate the fact that their best work was something they stole. Its crazy the movie was so bad it made me question everything, which lead me to find out the wachowskis were sued and lost in court over IP theft. The Matrix was heaaaavily lifted from The Invisibles.

We're getting to the point where creators are being forced to continue their beloved franchises against their will either from the producers or the fans. The whole story of Dark Soul 3 was Miyazaki saying "this franchise is 100% out of ideas, we need to move on!" and so was Phantom Pain for Hideo Kojima. Marvel keeps pumping out bullshit and the main actors are sick of it. Don't even get me started on starwars.

Thinking on it, it's amusing to think that Hideo purposely put the game into production hell just to mess with Konami's funds. To the point where the game wasn't fully complete however, he was still considerate enough to make it a playable game even if the state of the narrative felt incomplete.

I don't know about that, Kojima definitely put his A game on after 2 was poorly recieved with 3, and I think the same thing happened with 4. They basically gave him a blank check and after he used up so many funds with chapter 3 cut and expensive actors who he ended up underutilizing even with unused lines, the tank not being used, and camp omega dissapearing, its plausible he initially would've wanted to get out of Konami by self sabotage so he could move on to new projects. I'd believe it, until death stranding made the same missteps with a more mixed reception at launch. I have heard its got a lot of love but I think Kojima just wants to be surrounded by hollywood star power, since he's mistreated David Hayter throughout the MGS franchise.

You have to know Bhuddishm, Numerology and the basics of Zoroastrian dualism to say you even watched matrix Resurrections. A genius level event so alienating to its audience it won’t be seen as a masterpiece that it is for years to come. Absolutely loved matrix resurrections. I got no qualms with it whatsoever. As the worlds biggest matrix fan I have watched the original 78 times (yes I counted) it changed my life, it forced me to question my own reality and it made me love movies as my favourite personal interest. This movie is so sincere and exquisite in writing, subtext, allegories, performances etc. I love it for what it is. Any matrix film requires the viewer to upgrade their mindset and to watch it with clarity and vigilance. This film is no different. Like the original it gave me that feeling of reawakening. Rediscovering something for the first time like love or reuniting with an old friend. The film is a beautiful experience and one of the best sci-fi love stories ever committed to film. The visual storytelling on display here is excellent. The biggest irony for me is that the original changed the game, it’s influence on technology, media, culture, etc,it was a critical and commercial success. The pedigree of the original is unparalleled. What’s interesting is that over twenty years later the next instalment is ridiculed, panned, dismissed as nothing more then a sleazy cheap cash grab right? Everyone who didn’t like the film are all saying the exact same thing. Financially the film flopped too. If there’s one thing I know about this franchise is that every film was made with precision, meticulously crafted, it’s no accident or mistake that resurrections is considered a flop. That was the whole point! However if you take the red pill, adjust your mindset and rewatch this film again, you’ll see how deep rabbit

I agree, as far as the corporate greed part goes, it's an interesting "meta" take on it. How many movies are poking fun at the very studio that's responsible for its creation? Plus, although I'm a huge Matrix fan, I felt like the series started jumping the shark midway through Reloaded. The series was already getting bogged down in commercial appeal, actiony "rule of cool" more than intrigue. The Animatrix had fresher ideas than anything in the last half of the trilogy. The Wachowskis were clearly running out of steam by the end. The franchise was already getting "milked" by that point. And Matrix 4 came out at a time when we'd already had so many half-hearted reboots and remakes.

The real 5D chess move would have been to start Thomas Anderson in the same place, but never give the revelation that the matrix is real. The film is a psychodrama about a mentally ill artist, and his friends, family and doctors trying desperately to keep him sane, while the vultures at Warner Bros push him further and further into madness, not just with deadline pressure, but actively gaslighting him, precisely because they think he'll make more interesting work if he's unhinged and if he winds up unaliving himself, they can make big money on a re-release as a "tribute".

I absolutely hate it when brands these days try that whole "We're self aware and able to poke fun at ourselves too just like you guys do! Aren't we super relatable and hilarious now!? Who would have expected us, WB, to make a film where we totally make fun of ourselves! Aren't we so hip and 2024 now?"... No... When it comes to brands that whole self aware / self deprecating style of humor is never funny nor relatable, and it simply doesn't work for consumer brands like it works for comedians and individuals making fun of themselves. I literally want my time back and thank God I didn't end up having to pay a dime to watch this dumpster fire. If you must make a 5th Matrix film... and we all pray that you don't... We'd rather the franchise end finally and age like a fine wine and not like milk... But if you must make a 5th entry, please at least do a more serious prequel that follows the story of one of the 5 previous "ones" who came before Neo like the architect mentioned. Either try that or maybe a prequel that shows the beginning of the human/machine war as it's just breaking out with mankind using nukes and scorching the skies etc. Don't use Keanu any longer at this point, please just make a prequel (NOT a reboot!) which follows the storyline of one of the previous "anomalies" or "Neos".

It makes much more sense when you realise that studio execs do not care at all if their movies are good. I recall an anecdote about Alien 3, where David Fincher was at his wits end trying to convince the studio execs that the changes that they were insisting on would hurt the film, and they responded that they didn't care. They didn't give a shit that they were hurting the fim, because a good film is never their goal, only a profitable one. Great films bomb all the time, and terrible ones routinely make bank. I imagine Warner Bros thought that the brand recognition and attached talent would be enough for this film.

During the first 20 to 30 minutes of this movie I was mesmerized completely convinced it was a *prequel* to the original trilogy. I imagined the matrix was unintentionally created by Neo as a consequence of the AI he created for the games. I imagined Neo uploaded his consciousness to the matrix and that he, as the creator, had admin / world building privileges. I imagined he created the allies and the villains in this world taking people from his own life (including Trinity). I imagined the matrix had to stop Neo for some reason but it couldn't take any of his privileges, so it made him forget everything instead. And I imagined Morpheus was the first consciousness to emerge from this AI and that he would start a friendship with Neo that would lead to the never ending loop that eventually brought us to the original trilogy. It was an amazing movie in my head for a little while. Until it wasn't.

Don't think they even changed the layout of the aerobic machines, just made sure we were in exercise clothes, covered my arm tattoo with a crappy hoodie from wardrobe, and shot a bunch of takes. One whole scenario we did clearly hit the cutting room floor, and it was the later stuff that made it in. ANYWAY, you totally reminded me of that with your Lana and Hugo call bit.

Bugs indeed sports a tattoo that serves as a visual homage to Bugs Bunny, the iconic cartoon character. This choice is deeply intentional, reflecting both her namesake and the spirit of her character. Bugs Bunny is known for his cleverness, wit, and ability to outsmart his adversaries, traits that Bugs in the film embodies as she navigates the complex realities of the Matrix. Additionally, the reference to Bugs Bunny plays into the larger tradition within the Matrix franchise of using names and symbols that carry deeper meanings and connections to cultural touchstones. Her character, much like her animated counterpart, is resourceful, rebellious, and plays a critical role in challenging the status quo within the Matrix, making the tattoo a fitting symbol of her identity and role within the narrative

I've stayed far away from 4 ever since it came out; waiting to hear what other people say about it, what the reviews say, etc. All the while, I've been under the impression that it was just not a great fourth installment in the series. I then come across this video, and immediately skip any "spoilers" and start watching from 19:30.... imagine by disbelief when I learn what this actually is, and what I've been avoiding for the last three years.

I came away from the theater immediately thinking the same thing that you did, that wachowski deliberately killed this movie. The only thing I don't understand is why Keanu was willing to be a part of it

I was thinking that before I even reached the theater. I knew that both Wachowski's hated the idea of a new sequel as the story is complete, and the "Warner Bros is making this with or without you" line was in the trailer, so it was obvious that this movie was made out of spite. This theory is barely a theory, it had might as well be a fact

There is an interview with the wachowskis where they talk about Picasso revealing the Guernica painting and how the people chased him away with pitch forks the Wachowskis go on to explain that sometimes great art isn’t accepted in fact it’s generally rejected viscerally everybody hated reloaded because it assaults your perceptions and wakes people out of their comfort pods great art shakes you up don’t forget they were chased out of town for making speed racer and now years later it’s considered revolutionary along with their other work I believe this movie is ahead of it’s time and ten years from now people will actually start to understand what Lana was doing here. In my personal opinion, I think the movie is over the top bad in fact if you listen to Keanu’s dialogue with your eyes closed, you can hear he’s doing it bad intentionally One of the quotes from the teaser trailer is (we all find ourselves in these strange and repeating loops) I think that line is referencing how Hollywood just keeps remaking the same old story over and over and over again in fact, the movie came out the same time as Spider-Man no way home and that movie is about three other Spider-Man movies being combined into one repeating another cycle , The matrix will never another senseless cash grab and this was the only way to make another one the matrix has always been a middle finger to authority and I think this film is not a fourth matrix film. Like Lana says in one of her interviews. It is a construction that encompasses the ideology of the pre existing films through a completely different lens my only critique I would say to most people Who think this film is simply Lana pouring gasoline on her franchise would be incorrect. I think under all the intentionally bad aspects of the Film underneath all of the blatant and repulsive metanarratives hanging in front of your face, there is a beautiful story that I haven’t quite figured out, yet to be honest about the power of love, Art, the discovery of identity, and the rejection of authority all of which are present in this film while still being a shitty sequel You could hires the best writers in the world to sit down in the room and figure out how to make another entertaining matrix movie that has Laurence Fishburne, and all the stuff that everybody wanted and he would get Spider-Man no way home it’s like candy and broccoli you can get everything you think you want to feel bad when it’s over or you can eat broccoli and it taste terrible going down but you actually get some nutrition from it and I think The Matrix Ressurections is a much better Artistic achievement than Spider-Man no way home And if you think I’m wrong, see if you still feel the same way ten years from now

On a meta level this movie is a riot, it gets better the less you think of it as a matrix movie You have to question if the Wachowskis really are such good directors when only their first film is considered good. Their ideas are fantastic, but it seems like they need a good team to flesh out the ideas into a complete 'cinema experience'.

Having a prison cell with a balcony reminds me of the prison cells in The Eerie from Game of Thrones, the sky cells. Just giving you the option. Except the sky cells had an entire wall missing instead of a balcony. And i think they also had angled floors, so you couldn't even sleep without the fear of rolling off

The whole thing about the original Matrix being a video game was to deceive the characters themselves. Wiping their memories completely would have only set off a whole another Rebellion inevitably. But whipping some memories and leaving False memories of around the truth along with a different identity helps keep them where the Matrix wants them. Still being drained any used by robots in the real world

They are doing a Matrix 5 actually, Drew Goddard is directing. Lana is just an "executive producer" so she can have very little if any involvement. Keanu said he wouldn't do a movie without Lana so it's looking like a straight reboot (or at least continuing on without Keanu or Carrie-Anne).
