Def Jam Records was the very best of the best in my opinion. 💯 You can't make an album like this anymore! So many samples being used on the album created a beast that couldn't be attained or tamed ever again. The marriage of multiple genres brought many people together to celebrate the birth of a unique collective consciousness. My personal taste in music was defined during this era in music. I was ten years old when this album came out. I was hooked for life! The Beastie Boys, Run DMC and Public Enemy became the cornerstone in my foundation of a new style of an eclectic masterpiece of musical perfection. Most people tell me, "Hey man...you can't listen to this and that". Well my heart says otherwise so call the music police. I am so glad to have grown up in that era of music! 🙏💌💯

@@DavidHands that was the start of Def Jam. Major labels took a bit to catch on. After fan base was seen. I miss the 80s rap scene. Imo it was so much better. It wasnt all about killing and crap.

The Beastie Boys were the ones that played LL Cool J's demo for Rick Rubin and helped him get started. They also had Public Enemy as openers on one of their tours.

The musical and fan base crossover factor with The Beastie Boyz can never be understated. How they were able to influence so many different styles of music and be accepted as artists from the top of so many different musical genres is purely amazing. They just had something that EVERYONE liked. Didn't matter where you were from, color of your skin, financial status (Rich or Poor)...they just had fun and made it so ANYONE can have a good time right along with them. Diversity at its finest when you stop and think about it. Sublime was a band that had that similar feel. Definitely a great band to check out in the future

I love reaction vids because they demonstrate how much we all have in common and how small our differences are. You grew up listening to one kind of music and thought "this is my thing and that is all there is for me". Then you grew up, grew up some more, and then a little bit more. You were then like "WTF? There is so much more out here." I went through that from the perspective of a suburban white kid in the 80s. 2 Live Crew and NWA were scary, I did not think I was supposed to be listening to it. Now I look at that stuff as harmless and nostalgic. Anthrax! Back in the day, they did a cover of Bring the Noise. People riding that division train thought they were making fun of rap. Anthrax was like "hell nah", got together with Public Enemy, and jammed it out together as one unified group. Music brings down the divisions.

I still remember the first time I heard the Beasties. I was about 13 or so, camping with my family. My dad always took up to campsites without bathrooms so he could have peace and quiet (ha, with 4 kids). Not too far away, a ton of teenagers were straight up partying next to us. Drinking beer and blasting Licensed to Ill. My dad said, "What is that crap? It's awful." I didn't know what it was but I loved it. Later I recognized Fight for your right played on the radio so I knew who they were.

You need to watch videos of them live. AdRock plays the guitar, MCA plays the bass and Mike D plays the drums. Hearing and watching them before MCA passed was even better. They just got better with age. Check out the DVD “Awesome, I Fuckin’ Shot That” live at MSG from 04’. It’s so amazing.

They sound like Run DMC cuz they were all the front runners for the hip hop movement from the beginning. They were thought to have been a 'punk' band simply because of their look in those early 80's. They all play instruments so tons of original content from these guys. New tons of moguls back in the day, so they had lots of guest stars on their albums. I always thought it was awesome that Biz Markie hung with these guys, you here his voice every so many songs. I would absolutely jive to see/hear your take on their song 'Pass Da Mic'. Keep doing great. You be on FIRE bro👍

theres a lot of stuff on their first album that they distanced themselves from later (although they kept this in the set by changing the lyrics live to 'MCA's in back with the Mah-Jong board). Which is why MCA's verse in sure shot 'The disrespect to women has got to be through , To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends, I want to offer my love and respect to the end' is so profound

The Slayer guitarist was drafted to play on this Beastie Boys song by Rick Rubin, who was recording both Reign in Blood and License to Ill at the same time, in adjacent studios. According to King, he was offered a couple hundred bucks to play the riffs and solo.

"Raising Hell" and "Tougher Than Leather" were the only Run-D.M.C. albums Rick co-produced on. "Raising Hell' and "Licensed To Ill" sound similar, because they were being worked on in the same time frame...also both released in 1986. You can toss L.L. Cool J.'s "Radio" in that similar sound convo, as well.

They are one of a kind and brought so much to the music world that it’s unbelievable! Paul’s Boutique is an awesome album that was their second one produced… it was a flop back then but I can tell you that it was because it was so ahead of it’s time that blows my mind still.. today💕 RIP MCA💔
