It's relatable for me because in college I joked that I liked a little coffee with my chocolate (meaning the cup was a little coffee and a LOT of chocolate). It was also relatable for me because ColdStone's coffee ice cream mixed with Heath bars was EPIC--tho Dairy Queen's cappuccino and health blizzard may have occurred beforehand... can't recall anymore. Both were yummy, both can classify as sugar with coffee and cream. Lol.

Back in the day punk and hip hop had A LOT in common. They absolutely were not making fun of hip hop. That's a myth that stems from them making fun of Chad types in Fight for Your Right which was a satire song.

They started as a punk band but they were just a cookie cutter clone of bands like minor threat but they did a goofy rap version of their song cookie puss and it got more love than anything they'd done at that point so they decided to switch over. In the early 80s rap was as underground as punk rock and you'd see them in shows together

The New York punk scene and hip hop scene worked well together. Hell, the first song to have a rap in it to hit number one on the pop singles chart was done by the punk group, Blondie. Debbie Harry's last line in that song was, And you don't stop, To the punk rock. A lot of MCs used that line before Debbie Harry said it.

This song was about bringing the old hip hop feel back. This was 98 when Jay Z was blowing up as well as the Bad Boy movement with Puff and Mase. Beastie Boys wasn't about that content. They were over 10 years in the game at this point. This album sold 681,000 copies the first week, won a couple Grammys and was #1 on the Billboard album sales chart.

Boys from Brooklyn used to head down to DC to watch their favorite band Bad Brains. They had a punk band of their own, but during this time on the streets of NYC Hip-Hop was making a huge surge which caught their attention. Beatie Boys were born, nodding to their heroes Bad Brains by having 2 B's in their name as well. They didn't rap as a joke, but had playful songs, eventually becoming masters of their craft as well as sampling and mixing kings.

I consider their punk years like my guitar playing beginnings(without claiming to be like the Beasties). I switched to bass because the band I was in couldn't find a player. A month in and realised the low end is where I lived. I'm also glad it took several records to start incorporating live pa in their music. All these years later... Gahd they were so good the whole time.

The beasties did start in music as a punk rock/ skater kind of band. Then went to rap after. They're super talented in all they do.

They were a punk rock band making fun of frat boys with "You Gotta Fight". They never made fun of rap- they fell in love with rap the moment they heard it. It changed their very genre!

Ad-Rock grew up in NYC..BUT his father, famous playwright Israel Horovitz (a friend of me and my father), spent part of the year in my hometown of Gloucester, MA. running The Gloucester Stage Company. One evening in the 80's, at a showing of Basketball Diaries that Israel was directing, a young teen was brought on stage for a tiny pre-show act. The kid's name was Adam Horowitz, and he wanted to rap for all of us in the audience. That night a young man spit out a rehearsed little routine that was pure passion emulating his favorite music genera from back at his main home in NYC...greeted with a polite golf clap and dismissive smiles from Aerosmith loving white suburban Bostonians. As legend has it, this was the first public performance of the MC known as Ad-Rock. To imply that he was MOCKING hip-hop as a rocker...what a farce...he was actually pretending to be a hard rocking punk character as a true child of hip-hop and NYC's urban music revolution. Anyway...glad you found the Beasties, Van! Real hip-hop is black music...but a few whiteboys are certainly part of it's history.

First time I saw my son dance he was maybe 3 years old. I was playing this song on the old school rack home system with 15" woofers. I looked up and he was dancing in front of one of the speakers with his arms in the air. His next favorite was LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out".

The first dance Van did was the Troop. The second dance Van did was the Reebok. The hands go up with the Wop and your head kind of goes side to side and not like the Snake. (The Snake is the dance Chris Tucker does in every movie)

The Beastie Boys are stone cold legends with Paul's Boutique. Their blend of rap, hip hop, samples and tongue in cheek humor were off the chain freaking amazing. They really were able to mock the culture which stank (government, corporates, advertising( and raise up the culture that was cool. Totally infused with NYC/Brooklyn/Queens credentials too.

Bro, every video of yours I watch I got mad respect for you. I grew up in the 80’s-90’s and our parties WERE fkn sweaty hahah, no smart phones or selfies. Your recognition of how their style bled into todays styles is very proper. They did start as a rock band but were entertainers no matter what they did.

I like the interpretation of having fun and being able to party and in today's day and age the phone and social media has ruined that... it's so true, we were out with a friend and they were taking pictures and showing they were having a great time, but later we found out they were totally miserable... showing people your having fun when you actually aren't, it doesn't make any sense. I just came across your "LFR Family" videos today and you a good attitude on listening to music, keep it going!
