1st time viewer. Great review! As a software developer that does occasional gaming the extra vertical pixels are nearly essential for efficient work. There's a reason the MBP is 16:10 and the Pixel notebooks were 4:3; 16:9 isn't good for development. Thanks for the technical details about refresh rate limitation because this panel doesn't have the bandwidth it really requires that exists in >= Display Port 2.0 (which this doesn't have).

Thanks for the review! Just pulled the trigger on this monitor. I was originally holding out for the Samsung G9 but the extreme curvature, lack of 1600p, and tacky white design are enough of a turn-off for me I think. I'm replacing my Dell U3818DW with this monitor and I don't think I could downgrade from 38"/1600p after using it for so long.

Thanks Stan. I am agonizing over the the height issue too. I have a 34" ultrawide and it is not tall enough especially ever since excel added those really wide menu ribbons. I often need to compare vertically as well as horizontally. I just pulled the trigger for a 32" 4k 16:9. Can't wait to hear how you feel about the 38" ultrawide and losing that 1-2" of vertical after a while.

Great monitor. Bought mine a few days ago. Much better than 34” dell which I had to return a few months ago. Hopefully, one day they will make ultrawide with 32’s vertical height

Excellent review. totally with you regarding the G9. I had one and at first looked amazing but it lacked height and ended up with an amazon basics tv bracket to wall mount it. Mine had an issue anyway and i got a refund but now looking at this LG's.

Great review, thanks. I have a new PC on order with an nVidia card, but evem so I much prefer the non G-SYNC LG for the extra HDMI. I wasn't sure whether I should change my PC order to a FreeSync based GPU instead, but looks like the G-Sync emulation will be good enough for my needs.

I'm owning a 3440x1440 60hz model, thinking about switching to the GL or GN one for more vertical space and higher refresh rate. Leaning more towards the GL, but the fan noise problem is the only thing that keeps me concerned a little. I'm also curious what the 3080 or 3090 gpus could do in terms of fps on 3800x1600 with high/ultra settings, as this is even more pixels than my current 3440x1440

After watching your 3 vids about lg38's I'm going for the 38GL950G-B. For 2 reasons: the GL its now 300$ cheaper than the GN, second thing G-sync incl. not G-sync comp. with an intel 10900k/ rtx2080ti its going to be just fine , nice vids u get one more sub! (me) ;-)

Late to the party but great review. My 34GK950G-B broke yesterday and bought LG 38GN950 few hours later. Already knew the specs as i was looking at the GSYNC version for the last 4-5 months (missed some great 800 EUR second hand 2 year warranty offers on amazon thinking i don`t need to change my monitor ...). Was looking for a Free Sync review (still had time to cancel the purchase in case i change my mind) and now i`m 100% sure i made the right decision. The only bad thing is the price. Paid 1300 EUR.

Great video. I was hoping to ask you some advice. I have been using the Acer Predator x34 for a few years. I just purchased (still waiting) a new max loaded Alienware R11 with the 3080 card, intel i9-10900kf, 128gb ram etc. etc. I was looking to get a newer gaming monitor and was looking at one of these LG 38" or possibly the Samsung 49". My question is with my set up (NVidia card) which would you recommend and which model? The LG seems to have several versions of that monitor and I am not 100% of all the differences and which would be the right one for my set up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Imagine if they allowed you to invert the local dimming values between blacks and whites. You'd get a more uniform display for those that do web programming for example with a dark editor and a white web page preview, making the editor text sort of match the overwhelming bright web page so you hopefully don't get so much eye strain when looking back and forth between the editor and the preview.

I've been following your videos on the recent LG 38 line-up. Good stuff, thank you. I've noticed the image is noticeably darker when overclock mode is enabled my 38GN950. Have you experienced this at all?

Thoughts on this vs. the LG CX 48 as a monitor? I'm really second guessing if I want the TV. I've had it for a month and it's really not as bad as I thought it would be. However, there are some issues with chroma subsampling at 4k 120hz. The 38" resolution should be quite a bit easier and realistic to run. I really like ultrawide ratio too, but I'll be able to scale that and run it on the CX with black bars. I'm also wondering if it's too future proofed because it seems like the 4k experience on anything but console is kind of bad right now. I plan on getting new consoles, but mostly PC game. WFH as well. I wish the CX had a little curve. That said, the contrast and OLED is just amazzzzing. Another note, the fiance will only let me get 1 of monitor or TV for now, so the CX checks both boxes. However, I could get the 38" and theoretically get a 4k TV to play console down the line. Not super rushed with that.

I had a 38GL950 and though the fan was quiet it had enough noise to bother me when my room was silent. Like I had a case of tinitus. I then went with a 38GN950 and found a single stuck pixel. Currently waiting on a replacement and hopefully it won't have any issues.

Have they announced a new replacement for this panel yet with CES going on I never know when is a good time to buy ! Although they have a long track record of announcing a panel in January and finally shipping it in late December lol

Very good and thorough review of this two monitors and it made my choice easy, it will be the LG 38GN950-B for me :). Why? Because of the fan inside the LG 38GL950G that can go bad after a while with unwanted noice and i don´t want that possibility to be there as i am going to have this monitor for a long long time. Can you comment on the picture-by-picture capabilities? I was trying to decide between a G9 and this and ended up buying the G9 for 2x full 16:9 PBP, but after experiencing motion sickness with 32:9 gaming i'm planning to return the G9 and pick up some 3840x1600, but a priority is being able to display my PC and a game console side by side without black bars - is that possible? Hoping for a full 16:9 HDMI input with whatever resolution is left for my PC on DP.

Stan, I just ordered a 38GL950 and after watching this am questioning if I should have gone with teh GN version? I currently have a 1080Ti and 6700K looking to upgrade to a 10900K and a 3080Ti if that helps with helping me and my decision. I have def read a lot about the Fan noise issue and sure hope I have a unit that does not suffer from a high pitched loud fan. Figure I can return if its is immediately apparent but seems like quite a few users say it develops over time so maybe the extended no hassle warranty would be worth? I also was interested in more info about how the GN is a backlit panel vs the GL being and edge lit, am I correct in this statement? HDR400 vs 600 isnt really to important to me especially since peak brightness is the same on both of these panels. Any guidance on which to go with would be much appreciate, lol overly concerned with my choice considering you got rid of the GL for the GN (and I like you don't want to wait for the x38 not to mention that's gonna be $2500 instead of the 1800/1600 of the GL/GN.)

How are you connecting your desktop and laptop to the monitor? When I use DP with desktop, I get the full 144hz (and 75hz from laptop). However, with HDMI I get 60hz from desktop, 30hz from laptop. I'm having to switch my DP cable back and forth from laptop to desktop and I'd like to find a setup to set and forget.

Does the amazon basics monitor arm work for this size? The description says up to 32 inches.

So it seems there is a new GL version of this monitor, the 38GL950G-B? Does the "-B" mean it's the newest revision? According to LG's website it appears to be newer than this GN version, and appears to have a slimmer bezel than the previous GL, or so I'm guessing.

Question .. i just got RTX 3080 ti .. here i am , should i go with the LG 38GN950-B or with the LG 48" CX Oled Tv 4K @ 120 hz ??? of course the wide screen is very cool , also Oled can have burned spot eventualy on the screen .. i am mostly gaming .. what your advice to get the best out of the 3080 ti for visual candy eyes , mostly playing DCS simulator and Red dead redemption 2 ( right now i struggle between those 2 choice ) thx you for your time ! sorry for my bad spelling english haha . best regards !!

Interesting to compare the perspectives of you coming from a 32" 4K panel, because 32" 4K is about the only other one I would consider away from my 34" 1440p ultrawide. Thanks for checking out both versions as well. However you say around the 9:40 mark that these are the first 1600p panels, and that's off the mark. Dell and Apple did 1600p panels as far back as 2006, and LG has had a 1600p ultrawide since 2016.

I just paid 895 dollars (£744) brand new from UK LG store. This makes the older version £600 cheaper than this one and a no brainer really. Thanks for the review because now I know the local dimming and the HDR600 on this is about as useful as the older version so it’s made me even more happy I got that older version and saved a massive amount of money too.

Do you have any idea what this monitor is going to settle for in price in a few months? Availability seems low so it's jumping around a lot.

Great review. BTW I too have always wondered about the height of the display with regards to using spreadsheets or reading PDF documents. What difference does it make with pixels rather than size (height). Wouldn’t a bigger monitor like the Samsung’s 49 inch have taller height? Hence more page to see than than a 38 inch one?

Being fully G-sync compatible but not having an active fan is a huge boon. I ordered the AW3420DW from Dell a few days ago and now I'm considering to cancel the order and get this instead.

Here in Europe we have the Acer Predator X38. This seems to have the edge over the LG monitors for gaming. Shame you couldn't get your hands on one.

I just received this monitor vs a Samsung 4K UHD $400 Monitor and it took me some time to warm up to it! With that kind of price difference I would've thought it would have been a no brainer but it did take me some time to like it. Still looking at videos Im not able to 4K game on this monitor apparently.

Hey, I am considering these three Lg's, LG 38GL950-B vs LG 38WN95C-W vs LG 38GN950-B? I was also considering either a Samsung Odyssey G9 and/or a Dell Alienware AW3821DW but I think I like G9 the most (at least for now) but let's see. I hardly do any games any more but like G9's size and curvature and looks and want a right one mainly for productive and creative work like editing and websites etc and for a little bit of game time. Watched videos of content creators and developers loving their G9 though but lot's of G9's had issues earlier on and now it seems to have been fixed but you never know. Hello. I have had the same screen for over 3 months now. Today I noticed that at the bottom of the right side of the screen there are several bubbles lying in the screen. Do you have any idea what it could be?

Hey Stan, thanks for this video. I just got set up my 38GN950-B monitor and I hadn't even played a game yet and I'm already loving all of the real estate. In your video, you are showing what looks like a screensaver of a pendulum. Where did you get this? When I went to the LG site and tried to download the On Screen control software, there was nothing available. What exactly are you using for that pendulum & how can I get it? Again, thanks for this video - it was very helpful while I was figuring out what monitor to purchase.

I have new lg monitor with HDR support. I enabled HDR in windows 10 settings and it works. I tried sotor for example. But: 1. When I disable HDR in windows 10 settings I'm not able to enable it in games. This is normal? 2. When I play any game, even with no HDR support, like tomb Raider from 2013 I see HDR white bubble in the right upper corner from monitor osd. So I have fake HDR or this is error? 3. When I enable HDR in rdr2 game settings picture is Grey and washed out. When I disable HDR picture is OK again and I have HDR white bubble pop up in right corner. I don't understand what's going on.

How are the fonts on this monitor using Mac vs Windows?

I just purchased this monitor and it is not allowing me to go past 75hz? I have wen't through every setting and tried multiple DP cables. i'm running on a 3090 so I don't see why I would be having this problem. any suggestions?
