What you said about Stormlight is interesting. I am a physicist and I often have a terrible time reading scifi because my brain is screaming, “Authors! Google is your friend!” I always, however, feel “safe” reading Sanderson. He doesn’t forget little things like gravity and friction. As a side note, Tress is fun because fluid dynamics can be so counterintuitive and Sanderson plays with that. Re Kristoff - I really do not understand the women who like that book. I actually need someone to explain it to me because ick!

That's actually nice to hear. I'm not a physicist but a biologist and I often want to cry a bit hearing people talk or write about anything from evolution, to genetics and immunology. It's great if an author makes the effort and can represent science well. I've never actually read Sanderson 😅.... His books seem rather long so not sure what's a good one to start is.
@arlissbunny

@@exomake_mehorololo The Sanderson books look long but the prose aren’t dense so the books all read fast. I started with The Final Empire, the first book in the Mistborn series, and I feel like starting there gave me a solid footing. Almost all of Sanderson’s books are set in the same universe, though not necessarily on the same planet. The Final Empire makes sense as a place to start without getting in too deep. What’s interesting about Mistborn is that you can read on from the first Mistborn era (trilogy) into the second. Mistborn era two is set on the same planet many hundreds of years later following a major geologic and climate event. It’s fascinating to see how the society has changed as a result. Mistborn era two isn’t for everyone. Sanderson has a silly sense of humor and one of two major POV characters is written to be funny. For me, Mistborn era two is my favorite because I am both interested by the science and I love these characters in particular.

I liked EotV overall too, but I really enjoy seeing other readers rip apart for some reason. My guess is it ultimately has no thematic value other than returning vampires to supernatural monsters instead of bad boy love interests and psuedo scientific plague zombies.

Not everyone can like everything and that's ok! I used to be a HUGE Sanderson fan until I committed myself to reading his entire bibliography I realized that he is one of the most inoffensive mid authors out there today. Books with Brittany compared his books to vanilla ice cream because they can appeal to just about anyone, but it's rare they will ever do anything truly mind-blowing and I think that description sums it up perfectly. Still love stormlight, warbreaker, and the bands of mourning, but other than that no thank you

yeah, I think one of the reasons he is so popular is because his writing and his books are very accessible and that, in itself, is not a bad thing, it just so happens that while i'm easily digesting his work I'm also frustrated by what I regard as immense flaws, but one person's bug is another person's feature, to each their own

The Way of Kings was the book that finally made me realize that the cosmere franchise wasn't my jam. I don't hate it(the prologue and the climax were awesome), it's just that at the end of the day I don't think it did anything to justify it's ridiculous length. I've read books with half the page count that had just as good if not better character development, plot structure, prose and worldbuilding.

Hi Liene, Way of Kings has a really cool final act but it's a very slow trudge. Also, the physical description in Way of Kings was so absent. Words of Radiance is significantly better. Way of Kings has a lot of stuff set up that doesn't get answered until even the fourth book.

I’m halfway through Way of Kings right now, and I like it enough, but I’m definitely feeling some of these points. Mostly that it feels like there’s large swaths of text that don’t really contribute much of anything, and feel like they could’ve simply been cut out and we’d have a much better pace. I’m also just not getting that “masterpiece” feeling yet. I’m interested enough to keep going, but I feel like I’m waiting to see what everyone else sees. I wanna add, I actually found this channel through your Air Awakens review, which I heavily agreed with. THAT was an overhyped book for me, thanks to tiktok. What's with all the Sanderson hate on here? I like that Sanderson writes simple so that he can bridge the gap between YA and adult fantasy. His ability to write characters like they came from a Saturday morning cartoon and create magic systems that mimic video games are also great for getting kids to read. People shouldn't be so hard on him. We all have different reading levels and he is a great next step for those moving past Dr. Seuss to something a little more sophisticated.

Sanderson is immensely popular in just about every major sff community on the internet. For sff readers who don't like his works or don't like him because of his religious affiliations, this can be grating as you can't go more than a week without encountering a video/article/post about how his books are the greatest thing since sliced bread. So every once in a while, they come to places like this and vent their frustrations which is understandable IMO. Personally I'm rather lukewarm on his works. Read a handful of them, enjoyed some of those and decided they weren't really my thing.

Okay, I am sad that I missed the rant video for TWOK, that is definitely overhyped. And yes the fandom keeps saying it’s the best thing and yet can’t give a cohesive summary. Does Allen approve your view of L&L? I remember him coming back after a break wondering what happened in his absence with that book. I have no interest in reading despite the hype. I am attempting Babel again, I had issues with characters and the way it was written. I’ve chalked it up to me not being the correct audience. I hardly see anyone talk about Dawn of Wonder. I haven't read most of these. Way of Kings was an interesting one for me. I feel like I am a little bit of a Sanderfan, but I struggled with certain aspects. It was my first true epic fantasy read so I wasn't sure if that was part of it for me, but if I wasn't already a big fan of Sanderson, I definitely would have DNFed it after the consecutive false starts. The audio was probably what made it work for me because I would just listen to it while walking or going to visit my parents on the weekends, so it became kind of a chill episodic drama that lasted two months. I hear you on the characters though, Kalladin frustrates me more than anything and I didn't know what to make of Shallan until Words of Radiance. World building didn't bother me, but it didn't majorly impress me either. Funnily enough, a lot of his fans tend to bash Elantris, but I think that might be my favorite thing that he's written.

I can't believe I'm only just finding out now about your rant review of The Way of Kings??... Liene just keeps going up and up in my estimation. The best analogy I've heard to Sanderson fans becoming infuriated that others don't consider him a God amongst writers is that it's like someone showing up to a wine sommelier with a bottle of Welch's Grape Juice and being shocked that nobody's taking them seriously.

I agree with you most of these books are overhyped. Mistborn just had a cult following prior to Sanderson's involvement with WoT. I wonder where he would be in the fantasy pecking order if he didn't get handed the keys by Tor to the most popular adult fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings

I don't really understand the criticism of From Blood and Ash. I'm not really a fan of that book (I tried reading it a year ago and only got halfway through lol) but why does it matter if it feels like an urban fantasy but it's not? Way of Kings- I haven't read it but I've read several of Sanderson's other books and thought they were ok but people still always say I'll love Way of Kings. I find that highly doubtful. Forgetting Moon- DNF Traitor's Blade- I quite enjoyed the premise and the brotherhood, fun action, but there was some definite cringe and the later books have some of the worst deus ex machina I've ever encountered. Empire of the Vampire- DNF Shadow of What Was Lost- fine. boring interchangeable characters. I forget everything. Malice- The rest of the books makes it one of my favourite series of all time. I guess I'm also on the dark side because I cannot stand Stormlight Archive. The world building makes no sense, it's just dumb. So dumb. Sanderson doesn't understand how humans work socially or historically. The characters do nothing for me. His romantic relationship are honeslty so cringe, they come from no development, they just are. And his prose is very straight to the point and has no depth. (And of course, it could have been much shorter.) And let me tell you, I am in stem and I got NOTHING related to physics out of this book. If anything, Sanderson's works are very religious imo. I did like Mistborn, though now that I look back I didn't really love the third book. I don't know what it is that people fall head over heels over with his books. Some are good. I will probably read Skyward and Warbreaker but that's all. It feels almost heretical to talk bad about Sanderson books haha

I really enjoyed the first two mistborn books, but I felt the religious tone of the conclusion was really heavy handed and totally put me off. I read Warbreaker last year and I'm honestly shocked that people are okay with that book because the twist is, errrrrr, not okay imo

I mean, you're free to be wrong. 😂 Or conversely, I'm wrong. If so, I'm fine with that too. I never saw your Way of Kings review, but from what you've said I pretty much disagree with you on all points. Sanderson isn't an amazing author and isn't perfect, but he is really good at the things I love to see in fiction, so he's typically a good fit for me. On the otherhand Abercrombie is really good at doing things I don't tend to enjoy, so he doesn't fit for me (from what I've read). As for Legends and Lattes (the only other one I've read in this list), I can see how you'd not like it. I thought it was fun. Not genre changing, but it was a fun read. You're wrong about Way of Kings ;p Well you're right about the pacing, that was my issue with it, but I still loved the book despite that. But I'm just of the opinion that no book or series is for everyone, even ones with astronomical ratings on Goodreads. I for the life of my do not get the love for The Six of Crows duology. To me it's very average, but it's beloved by so many people. Also, now having read The Dandelion Dynasty, I think that series handled the theme of colonialism so much better than Babel. Ken Liu deserves much more love (and imo a way better writer than RF Kuang). Apart from Way of Kings, I agree with all your hot takes on the books that I read even if I liked the book.
