A Dirt Cheap Life in Paraguay

Ай бұрын

Recently we were ravaged, roasted & toasted by a disgruntled creator who took issue with the fact that we had an opinion about why we chose to move to Paraguay from Central America.
To protect his identity we will call him Mr Potato Head.
MPH was upset about numerous things; he chuffed that we had not travelled to some of the places we claimed and even moved to Paraguay to be with those 'certain people' 🤔
So, we thought we should set part of the record straight and highlight two big reasons why Paraguay is Numero Uno in our view.
Regardless, thanks Mr Potato Head for bringing people to our channel and helping spread the word about Paraguay. Muchos gracias amigo and best of luck with your residency application in your chosen country. It's about time!
If you are granted residency hopefully you will tense down a bit. Life is too short to be that stressed! 😬

Ive lived 6 years in south east asia and Ive just stumbled upon your channel and have been binge watching. Love the content. I also found Mr Potato Head's video you are responding to here. It is great that he may have more experience than you on Nicaragua and can maybe shed more light on certain topics. Word of mouth between expats/immigrants is the best way we get news in a new country. But attributing malice, with such certainty, to your intent is unhinged, suggesting you have some agenda 😂. Classy response sir.

Thanks for the comments. MPH may have been there for a prolonged period but we also lived there for several months and thoroughly assessed it as an option. I can say with 100% confidence that a lot of what he puts out is factually incorrect BS. It worries me that real people will act on his advice because I know for certain that key aspects of it are BS. His entire, deliberate, fictitious attack on us demonstrates he has no hesitation in lying to serve his interests. That makes for a dangerous, unreliable source.

Hey dizzypringles, you are a hero in the Dirt Cheap House! I thought you'd be on the Potato Head Live Feed tonight? We have appreciated your tireless efforts to bring the potato to his senses. Alas, all our collective efforts seem to be in vain. That guy's ego and tendency to bend reality to suit his agenda is epic. There is no way potato is what he purports to be. Our concern is that he's luring too many people and they are in for a rude shock. Thanks again, and please feel free to email us as we are fans of your work! Potato's should stay in the ground! The Southeast Asian countries that actually have reasonable residency permits both have large English speaking populations. One has better infrastructure than the other, but you need money to live in that country. You don't need a lot of money to live on there, but you need a lot of savings. You need a low 5 figures in savings for the other country, but they make exiting rhe country more troublesome. Theree is a third country with relatively easy residence visas in Southeast Asia, but there are not a lot of English speakers there. Spanish is easier to learn than the language that country speaks, but for Americans that country's money is easy to understand because they use USD. The first two countries are very tax favorsble. The theid country is jot as tax favorable, but it is fairly cheap to live there. There are two other countries in Southeast Asia which have the issues yoy discussed, and one of them has a couple of routes to get solid residency, but you still need to report to immigration with some regularity as I understand it. There is another much larger Southeast Asian country which has made it easier to live there in terms of residency, but the taxes are bad, and they have some draconian rules in regards to interpersonal relationships and freedom of association. The one country that has some residency permits that makes it tough with reporting requirements just made it worse for taxes, so, at the end of the day the 10% corporate rate in Paraguay, with an 8% dividend rate on local corporate disbursals and no CFC rules with no taxes on foreign income and an 8% capital gains rate that won't apply to foreign dividends from your holding company, Paraguay's easy residence and 120 day presence test for tax residence couple with Spanish being an easy language to learn makes it very attractive. Being landlocked and not quite as well developed as Argentina, Uruguay, or Chile means its neighbors are great places fo visit. I mean 4 months in Paragua, and a few months each year without becoming a tax resident in Chile, or Argentina, or Uruguay makes it very attractive.

So much valuable information in your post. Thank you. In addition to the positive observations you make about Paraguay there's also the benefit of its location. The geopolitical situation as it is today makes Paraguay a relatively good place to be. Of course, all things are subject to change, but I'd rather be here than Sth East Asia for that reason alone. Thanks again.

I totally agree about Nicaraguan residency. I tried to get it when we were there a couple years ago but was foiled by the birth certificate requirement. I couldn't get the right kind of document to satisfy the govt official, and had to give up. The requirement to renew your cedula every six months is also incredibly restrictive. I don't think I would try again so long as that rule stays in place. (I know who you mean by Mr. Potato Head. His video about you was incredibly unfair!)

Cheers. Yes, we have heard many stories of all kinds of delays, hold ups & complications. Likewise with the border run process. Despite what MPH says that does not always go to plan. Beautiful holiday location but with those uncertainties not a place I'd want to establish myself in.

Thanks or the information sir. May I asked if you were HIV tested for the temporary residence? I read somewhere that Paraguay tests and refuses either the temp or permanent residency to folk who are HIV positive.

I can answer that from my experience. For the residency a health screening is requiered - on paper. There was no meeting with a doctor and no-one asked anything re health issues.

No. In Paraguay, school attendance is compulsory. Our children were admitted without up-to-date vaccinations. In Paraguay, a lot of things are done informally and through contacts. You need money and/or contacts. Then (almost) everything is possible.

I don't know the rules, but one guy recently said that he just walked his dog in and they didn't stop him to look at anything - it was that easy going in Paraguay. When we brought our 3 dogs to Mexico from Australia - we had to give them a rabies shot (which is supposed to be one of the least invasive shots) about a month ahead of time; I got varying reports on if anything else was required. I did not want to give our dogs any extra shots so I took the chance and they were accepted into Mexico with just the rabies shot. A vet did examine them though when we arrived in Mexico.

My high school Spanish was almost non-existent after 20 years of no time in a classroom. 3 months of doing DuoLingo daily for about 20 minutes has me even a year later comfortable enough to know how to say Habla mas despacio, por favor, porque no te entiendo, with reasonable confidence that people will understand I need them to speak slowly so I can pick up what they are putting down and maybe use the simplest words or gestures to help me understand them. But it also has me confident enough to know how to tell people a lot of things I might need or want and ask for help learning what to say politely. I found that having at the back of your mind that you might want to actually use the language is a great motivator to learn and retain it or as my sister who is a foreign language teacher says, acquire the language.
@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay
@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay Ай бұрын
Good insights, thanks. The language acquisition path is a long and winding road, at least for me. The path to learning a language, more than anything else I can think of, is so subjective. My daughter is incredibly skilled at learning Spanish, and she came a long way just with Duolingo. For me, comprehensible input is best. We have recently found the youtube channel 'Organic Spanish' and I find this really helpful. I think it''s just about consistency.
