One of the most iconic visual elements of the Second World War are German panzers blitzing their way across enemy territory, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake.
During the First World War, German tanks had a less than auspicious start. Their first attempt at a tank design was the A7V, a clunky metal box on tracks, a far cry from the formidable vehicles of a quarter century later.

I found out Mephisto, the sole surviving A7V is on display about 5 minutes from where I live (in Brisbane, Australia of all places). After watching, I went and visited it. So cool seeing it in person after such an in-depth analysis. Thank you Simple History!

we only have it cause we took it off the battlefield in the war, brought it back here, then forgot about it for years. good for history else it would have been turned to metal for weapons in later wars

I cannot and I highly doubt there were any imperial Russian made mashine guns in a German WW1 tank. I don't know who made this video but it's highly inacurate. It's so dumb the speaker even confuse WW1 and WW2 at 00:05 seconds. To break it down: One of the crappiest videos I've seen in a while

i know the reference and meme but should you be interested in the actual meaning: many armies used the skull (and crossbones) symbol (even before ww1 and ww2) and mostly in a sense like "death or glory" or "give no pardon, take no pardon" etc.

There is a A7V called “Mephisto” in Brisbane, Australia. It was recovered by the Australian Army, not the British.

Did you really not even watch the video? They talk about it extensively. And it was a combination of British and Australian forces that captured it, not solely the Australian army either.

Mesphito was captured by the Queensland regiment after 3 or 4 days in no man's land and transported to there regimental depot as a war prize , if the British captured it it would have gone there instead . This was done when general Monash had finally used the Australian regiments together with an Australian commander for the first time .

Who here remembers that one WW1 flash game where you would periodically send out troops with cooldowns and could launch artillery and gas aswell as move troops between trenches and it was a side scroller battler? This tank being one that the enemy could send out if you play british or one you could send out as german later on during the campaign?

Even in WW1 the German Army couldn't help fiddling with things and changing the tank. It's not even surprising that the same thing happened in WW2, 2 completely different governments and eras and yet they make the exact same mistake

What you have to remember about the A7V is, it's basically just a sample serie of prototypes compared to the Mk's which have fixed some of the more immediate issues by the end of the war. The A7V is rather innovative for the era in it's own ways compared to the FT-17, these are best explained by Military History Visualized when he visits a replica in a museum. The chasse of the A7V would also see other uses as a trench excavator, munitions carrier and SPAAG. A minor error however. A7V - is powered by a 4cyl engine Simple History - Draws it as a 6cyl engine from a british tank.

I Think Mephisto the German A7V is what we of Australians had captured during WWI In April 1918, during a German attack at Villers-Bretonneux on the Western Front, A7V Mephisto became stuck in a shell-hole and was abandoned by its crew. It was recovered by Allied troops about three months later and, after the war, taken to Australia as a trophy.

You forgot to mention about one time the A7V captured a British trench and even the Brits gave the thing the nickname the "Moving Fortress". Don't believe me look it up with the Great war KZfaq channel talking about the German Panzer and the tank museum in Germany.

Great History video about the A7V. I've seen Mephisto. At the time it was on loan to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia in around 2013. I saw it while I was there as a parent helper on my daughters grade 6 school camp to Canberra. An impressive piece of equipment indeed.

The A7V was a heavy tank introduced by Germany in 1918 during World War I. One hundred chassis were ordered in early 1917, ten to be finished as fighting vehicles with armoured bodies, and the remainder as Überlandwagen cargo carriers. The number to be armoured was later increased to 20. They were used in action from March to October 1918 and were the only tanks produced by Germany in World War I to be used in combat.

Excellent British humor. The Germans painted a red demon carrying a British tank away, so in return; the British painted an even bigger royal Lion with a paw on an A7V.

The "female" version was not a modification of a "male" version (please note the German did not use these British terms). The only A7V which was briefly a "female" was tank 501 "Gretchen", which took part in first two A7V battles (21st March and 24th April 1918) armed with 8 MG08s. In May 1918 however, it was given a 57 mm gun instead of two MGs on the front and became a standard A7V. "Gretchen" was a "female" at the beginning because originally the Germans wanted to produce both "males" and "females", but later they decided to produce "males" only. Also, in reality the Germans used in battle A7V and captured British Mark IV tanks - only these two types. Although they did capture other types of British and French tanks, they were only tested, not used operationally. Mark IV tanks were used, because around 180 were captured during the war, many of them during the battle of Cambrai in 1917.

you contradicted yourself: it was very much a modified A7V, otherwise it wouldn’t have had a separate armament layout and convert so easily it was a failed variation, they chose firepower over useless extra machine guns

I live in Brisbane Queensland which is where the only surviving A7V in the world is. I’ve visited it and let me tell you it is MASSIVE but it is definitely worth having a look. 🙂

A giant breadbox of death! A nightmare to face in BF1, but great when you get your hands on it. A badass tank, if a bit overengineered. A literal rolling fortress tank and I love it! Gotta respect those crazy Aussies for saving the last A7V in existence. Bless those unknowing heroes of tank history.

Two British WWI Mark V tanks were found at the Lustgarten in Berlin, June 1945. The tanks were captured by the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. After the German Army occupied Smolensk following the first battle of Smolensk the Mark V tanks were transported back to Berlin as war trophies where the badly damaged tanks were later found by allied troops in 1945.

I live in Brisbane Australia & for years the Mephisto sat out in the weather in front of the old museum, I've climed on it, it is now in some warehouse being restored, I did not know it's history until recently.

Mephisto was stored outside, down the road from where we lived at the local museum. We used to climb all over it. It was basically a box with tracks under it.

I still love how the first ever tank on tank battle involved both sides shooting each other until the ammo ran out, then everyone went home with nobody even seriously injured. They literally lacked the punch to hurt each other.

@@thurin84 After a quick google search, it looks like some later war stainless steel canteens with horizontal seams were soldered together using lead, but were not completely made of lead. A guy actually tested several WW2 canteens for lead in the water and found all of them to be safe. The article is actually kind of cool, you can find it at the website called “thesmileygi” Article titled “Is it Safe to Drink From WWII Canteens?” Don’t want to put the URL as KZfaq will probably filter it out.

The A7V wasn't the only tank Germany produced during WWI, they also produced at least one K-wagon tank though it didn't see any combat action.

I used to mow baseball field outfields and whenever someone hit a home run that hit the metal storage garage it sounded like a gun going off next to your ear. Now times that by 10 and you’ll know what it must’ve been like in a WW1 tank.
