I worked on assembling and testing the main propulsion turbines for the Bush, Ford, and Kennedy. I also had the opportunity to tour the Bush when it was about 80% complete.

During the ship's shakedown cruise before deployment my son told me how amazing it was that for a ship of that size and weight the damn thing could reverse the turbines and bank to either side as it turned around while the engine was in full reverse. The one thing that sucked though is the new sanitation system that DIDNT work as well as expected while out to sea on its 7 month deployment. Constant problems with plugged up toilets (and not enough toilets)

@iMinePi Club my friend Ed was in a carrier, his bunk shared a wall with the chain locker. Luckily this guy can sleep standing up, anywhere, even in a running shower. So he was "the" ideal seaman. He also did 6 tours to Iraq/Afghanistan.

I think they are sitting targets now. Countries are developing AI controlled missiles and have hypersonic missiles. It won't be long before aircraft carriers are useless. What can they do against a swarm of drones?? (even underwater drones) Why do we even need fighter jets when we can have much faster unmanned vehicles?

They contain multiple full surgical hospitals, several methods of transporting injured people between ship and shore, and enough extra electricity generation capability to power a small town on land. Include the large food reserve usable for emergency feeding large masses of calamity impacted people on land. World wide communication capability is in there, too. Telling a country "I can bomb you anytime" does not quite have the geopolitical effect of parking 3 ships outside their waters with enough firepower to level them. This is what happened several years ago with North Korea, shortly leading to the peace talks between Trump and Kim. It's not the actual firepower that aircraft carriers are used for- they've been critical in diplomatic exchanges more often, without dropping a bomb.

They still have some time, but there are new missiles that can get past the best an aircraft carrier and its defense has to offer. If they do, it's a HUGE loss. Drones and missiles for jets? Drones and anti-tank missiles decimating Putin's inventory of tanks? UAVs will replace jets, ships are becoming sitting ducks for new missiles defenses and tanks....well, you know. Or should, watching this military stuff. The writing is on the wall for many of today's best weapons.

@@joeschmoe4894 The easts hypersonic missiles are a myth. The require high altitude positioning with a downward trajectory to reach their claimed hypersonic missile speeds. The problem with those systems is the the moment they go high altitude they stand out like a sore thumb. They for example cannot be used for level flight at sea level. The US has been making these types of hypersonic missiles since the 1950s. The only nation on earth that has level flight hypersonic systems that are self propelled is the US. Now there are short range systems that the US and UK have that go hypersonic but they are useless for naval warfare. The problem that every nation who tries to take on the US in naval warfare will have is the moment they come into their attack positions the US already knows they are there and will have targeted them.

However, China has come a long way and a concerted effort by either Russia or China could certainly have a chance of success in taking out an aircraft carrier. Modern weapons are becoming small, powerful, mobile, and autonomous, a possibly lethal combination for something very large and very slow-moving relative to projectiles. Slow moving manned weapons are high value targets, especially an aircraft carrier in a serious war. There was a Swedish electric sub that made a successful hit on an American carrier in war games in Europe. The sub was undetected until it was too late, and it was small and relatively cheap. A new generation of weapons are arriving and they will be game-changers.

Still had plenty of failures. The US adapted it and gave it upgrades, but ultimately used it for the development of the F35B

This is due to defence cuts and therefore the squadron (617)of RAF aircraft you talk about are made up of RAF pilots and Royal Navy pilots who all operate from the British carriers. There is not currently and unlikely to be a Royal Naval squadron dedicated to the F35B.

the f 35 b are in use also in the Italian Navy on ship Cavour and by the end of the year on new Lhd Trieste
