@John Wayne According to him it wasn't much of a choice. His initial intention was to become a doctor, but at some point his father had to step down from the life, and Michael had to join in his place (or something along those lines). He had to step up on behalf of his family.

@John Wayne A complicated decision to make, like whether or not to join the mafia, won't make "real sense" with a short, vague explanation coming from me. Michael himself explains in various videos the circumstances that compelled him to join. If I remember correctly one of the main reasons was to essentially protect his father's life.

Michael you did the right thing because the guy’s life was on the line. I admire a guy who is smart enough to talk his way out different difficult situations instead of fighting or resorting to violence to settle petty issues. Like it or not, this is the class of people that used to run America. Tough, but fair. It's tragic what's become of organized crime today. It's all corporations, hands-off business. Between the mayors of big cities like Chicago and the president, it's a circus, and nothing works right. Remember he related in other video that when his character was introduced in the movie Goodfellas, he and his wife left the cinema. Paulo Eclectik he is not just out, he is replaced by younger versions who respect him but would never ever consider him. He is retired. To sit and listen, and to hear the way things were in the mafia, from someone that was there, is truly eye-opening. My father was a decorated policeman, and the reason he left the police force, is because of all the corruption. He was one of the few, honest cops. Three years after he left, the whole force that he was part of, went down and all went to jail. I would rather trust the word of a made guy, than a man in a uniform with a badge, that is corrupt. After they lowered Paul from a wall to save his life, I'm sure the people who helped him had to lie as to Paul's whereabouts. You're absolutely right. Sometimes we have to lie to protect someone. If Mike let Jerry die the rest his crew would question his power? "What is the point of me working with someone who doesn't use his power to help me? What good is he? Is he weak?" I remember reading this story in one of Mike's books. I think Jerry had to pay for the new car which is the right thing to do. If Jerry had been respectful and tried to sort out the problem then Mario's brother in law would not have had to use his influence to make things right. It's never a good idea to leave a customer unhappy, unless they are a bad customer. Sometimes you have to fire customers. When you have a reasonable customer with reasonable demand you have a jewel, a treasure. Protect their interests.

Yup, and sounds like Mario was the type of mob guy that was overly violent and an asshole. Taking a man's life over an unrelated argument with his BIL? Fuck man, I know these guys are killers but that sounds outrageous even in a movie setting. Beat up Jerry? Sure. Hospital? Maybe a broken bone at the most but killing him? The justice doesn't equal the crime. It would be like a judge sentencing you to the death penalty because he heard you called him in asshole from a 3rd party. I'm guessing Mario didn't end up living very long after this. Loose cannon.

@@ZacharyCusanelli the story literally said that mario was one of the old guys. Thats how he got to the top, hes not a loose cannon he just lashes out at people who disrespect him. He also clearly had no intention of killing jerry whatsoever, he knew thta if he kept the pressure up his brother in law would get an apology or a new car and he would look tougher to all his associates for it.

I'm amazed at how he resolved this situation on a moment's notice. Remember, he didn't know going into the meeting and had to improvise to basically save his guy's life. Life or death decision on a moment's notice. To be calm and came up with a strategy to defuse the situation so impressive.

He had to live in hiding for years because there were contracts on his life, even approved by his own father, a story he's told a few times. Would hardly call that "with the blessing of the mafia." The only real reason he's been able to be so public is he's basically out lived the guys that wanted him dead essentially.

I'm Puerto rican from Brooklyn and In 95 my mom passed away. I the moved in with my uncle and his Italian wife. Her father was definitely connected, ran a bullshit construction company and even hired me on as a cleaner at 16. Cleaning the sites after work was done. And I know for a fact that through my aunt's father I've met Michael. I know I met this man atleast 1 time before. You don't forget a face like that. I dont remember the year but my aunts father had to take something to him. Aunts father is in jail for some tax issue with his company. But I'll never forget the adventures he sent me on. I was in places with him full of italian men and he would say you're not Puerto Rican if they ask you're my grandson and full italian. And you speak spanish. Period. That's all I can say about It. But i know I've met Michael

@@michaelfranzese i grew up in Brooklyn Coney Island my grandfather work for mr Gambino when he was living on ocean Parkway and i went to school with alot of ppl and sal gambino became one of my best friends mr Carlos gambino grandson i know about 86st in Bensonhurst ..as a kid wild bill use to by use pizza after a baseball game i was playing for gil hogers at the time ppl in that life gave us jobs at the rides in Coney Island sammy office was a block away from my young brother school on stillwell ave and he was really a kind guy i say all that to say i really respect you and what your doing i think i was Italian in my pass life

I have to agree for the most part because Michael is fucking awesome but some of those ww2 guys have INSANE stories especially the German and Russian vets of the ostfront war on that scale and level of brutality is just unimaginable to me. different type of war stories from Michaels lol but still intense.
