How to do a water change a betta fish tank. Water changes ideally need to be done once a week. Filters should be cleaned every 4-6 weeks depending on the stocking level of the fish. When cleaning the filter it should be done in aquarium water otherwise the bacteria that lives in the sponge will be killed off. If you don't have a filter in the tank 80-100% water changes should be done every 2-3 days.

I really liked how you were careful to emphasize that it depends on you and your tank. I do large water changes a lot (50 to 60 percent probably at least once a week if not twice) because I know that my tanks are a bit overstocked. That being said, I don't disturb the fish, gravel or filter with this changes and am careful to have the right temperature water being put back into the tank (I am also lucky to have amazing water where I am from and don't need to condition it before hand for my bettas). I feel like this is the only way to keep my halfmoon's fins healthy and I know a lot of people would freak out hearing that but I think it comes down to your own personal experiences and knowing what has worked and hasn't worked for your tanks. I think that's kinda the hardest thing about getting into a hobby like this is that you can read up all you want, but when it comes down to it, you can only truly learn the ins and outs by experiencing things yourself.

My first upcoming water change is this weekend and I had a general idea about how to go about this, but this video helped immensely and I feel a lot better about it. Also thanks for the idea of the clip for the siphon! Haven't seen anybody on youtube using one , it'll definitely make the whole thing easier, I'm sure! Great video!

It's sure a powerful one even if it is a little flimsy, I don't care. If it's drawing too fast I just squeeze the tubing as needed to slow it down a bit. The manual ones I could manage to get it to work but most of the time it took several goes at it before it worked. Those squeeze pump ones are not reliable to work either.

I so agree with having multiple cleaning supplies for different tanks. I had a betta who had two white spots. I used the same siphon between two tanks. My next betta ended up with two spots as well. I do water changes weekly so not sure why they got ich or fungus but i think i contaminated the second betta from the siphon i used from the first. The first guy not doing well but the second one is doing well. I now use separate siphons and cleaning supplies for my now 3 betta tanks with their names on them too so I know which is who's and doing extra daily water changes on the sick guy. Thank you! Water changes are so important.

Hmm for some reason my gravel vac always starts a siphon, but then it stops and doesn't flow through the tubes. I'm guessing I need to get a better tube for it? Also, I have been following this series from the start and my tank is doing pretty well! I have been running it for 2 weeks now, and I think I have the hang of this. I went to Petsmart for a water check and they said it looked good! I decided to get a cute little moss ball for it, but I will be getting my fish just as soon as I get my vacuum working haha. Ty sooo much for these videos

Hey Sheila, I would just like to thank you for creating this KZfaq channel and caring about helping other people. Without you my new elephant ear betta would be in heaven, like I'm not even kidding lol😂 but because you did create this KZfaq channel he's happily resting on his hammock. One question, he is sometimes EXTREMELY lazy is that just part of his personality or should I look into that, maybe I should test the ammonia. (The ph is 7.0). My tank also has a lot of dead(?) algae on the bottom should I do a water change? (The thing I'm worried about is stressing my betta because I got him a few days ago) Anyway sorry for bothering you💜💜💕😊

Your right about cleaning your filter at the same time. But with only a few fish in a 5 or 10 gal tank your filter shouldn't need cleaning as much. I clean my bio filters ever 6 months and my tanks are never cloudy.

Heavily planted tanks don't need the gravel vacuumed, so yes it's fine! Just skim over the plants when doing water chances to pick up any dead plant material.

If you already have a filter in the tank, run both for about a month, and then take the old one out. If you're adding a new filter with no existing filter, just rinse it a little with tank water and add it in. :) Any filter is better than no filter and the sooner it can become home to beneficial bacteria, the better.

I'm sure that you could, but they both dechlorinate so you wouldn't need both. I personally just use Prime, 2 drops a gallon and it dechlorinates and helps start up the tank. Whereas I think Top Fin just dechlorinates.

I love the lids I would buy one do the Bettas ever try to jump out
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 6 жыл бұрын
Mine don’t but I hear of many that do. Bettas on the whole are jumpers although they’re likely to jump more if water quality is bad.

Can you do a video all about keeping snails in a betta tank if you haven't already pleaseee! I really want to introduce snails into my divided betta tank but I don't have the slightest idea of snail types or even caring for them

Watching this series before my tank arrives, and I will be rewatching it as i go through the process. Blueberry is in a 1 gal glass jar, and changing the water every 2-4 days for now. This series is soooo helpful!

Can I just ask why you don't have glass lids made as they are more robust and easier to clean without the risk of scratching. They also are not affected by the use of a light which will also warp plastic or acrylic.
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 5 жыл бұрын
Acrylic is a lot cheaper to buy than having glass cut to size. They’re easier to remove and clean and you never have to worry about breaking them. We have been using them for years with no issues.

Is that just black gravel? or is it this type of special plant gravel that you used in your tank

I recently set up a new betta tank and I was wondering what to do about evaporation? I have a heater in mine since I live in a place where it gets cold, and warmer water tends to evaporate more quickly. Do I add more prime every time I top it off?
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 6 жыл бұрын
If you have a lid on the tank that will help with evaporation. Yes, anytime you add water to the tank you must use water conditioner.

How do I find out how much to change? Should i test the water to see before and after to see what the the nitrate levels are or just start doing 25% a week?
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 6 жыл бұрын
It's just a general rule. In a 2.5 gallon tank once cycled I would do approximately 30-40% once a week.

Do I still need the Prime if I use bottled water?
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 6 жыл бұрын
I would. Using bottled water is not ideal as it is often lacking the minerals needed in water.
