How to choose a Betta fish? Where to get one from? There are many places to choose from when buying fish. Fish are available online, instores and local adds. When buying a betta fish be sure to look for a healthy one, alert and active. If you choose a sick, you need the knowledge and possibly a lot of medication to nurse it back to health. When adding the betta to the tank he may seem stressed but this is normal for the first few days.

I am so happy to see him in his new tank, it is soooo nice!! After breeding him and his siblings its so rewarding to see him in a large tank of his own with space to explore and swim around. Makes the whole journey feel very complete for me. Now I can't wait to see how the breeding goes and what fry he produces. PS- I need to make more fish available for sale on my site. I have some more..they were just growing out. ^_^

Every pet( bird, fish and rabbits)I have was the unhealthiest of all in the petstore. I always by the one which in my opinion would not be bought by anyone so I choose not to let it die and bring it home n nurse it back to good health. This also has a better side in case of birds as they easily become hand tamed as they get used to you.

Buying the sickest fish in the petstore encourages that shop to mistreat fish because "even if it looks half dead, someone will buy it". If people only bought healthy fish, petstores would be more inclined to treat them well to ensure they are healthy.

@@kopiec6565 I feel most shops that do this are chains that will never change their methods, THOUGH as I say this, its been 11 years+ since I had a betta, and when I went to go search for my first Betta in years their cups got about 5x bigger than i remember, still not big enough, but the chains seem to be paying attention... to a degree.

It’s so heartbreaking to see how pet stores in America treat Bettas here in Australia they are in clean proper size tanks with plants gravel and hidey things with lamps and heaters
@abbygrimit5858
@abbygrimit5858 6 жыл бұрын
Not all petstores in America treat them that way, it is mostly chain stores that do that. My lfs has a wall of tanks divided into many sections that each have a live plant. Each section is about 2 gallons I believe. The bettas in there are stunning and incredibly healthy.

My LFS basically keeps them in small hang-on cups similar to breeder baskets. The plastic is opaque on all sides except the one facing the aquarium glass so that the Bettas can't see each other, and the cups have vents at the back so that their water can be exchanged with the water inside the aquarium. It's not ideal and the bettas don't look happy due to their tiny living space, but at least they're in good physical health.

Thanks so much for all these beginner oriented videos. I bought a betta a week ago and have never kept fish before so it's all new to me. I had a one gallon tank to begin with but after adding decorations I realized he clearly needed a bigger tank. Doing the research I ended up buying a 5 gallon then the term cycling started to pop up all over the place and I had no idea what that meant. When I brought Ripley home I just filled the 1 gallon with water and let him acclimate in the bag before adding him. Now I'm shocked he didn't go in to shock. Now I'm better informed and knew I needed to cycle my new tank but no idea how. Your video was very helpful!

Charlotte Orman Yea, Platies are awesome, they swim around a lot and are very peaceful, please start with about a small school of 3-4 then add more fish slowly. Guppies can do well with betas but they aren’t my first choice recommendation because they have longer fins and tend to fight for food. Neon tetras are great as well. Deffo do your research and look at other suggestions as well!

I definitely agree about picking out a healthy betta for your first! I've had many sickly bettas from poor conditions in pet stores bounce back from just clean water alone, but it's not ideal for someone starting out! Educate yourself on the behavior of a healthy betta before jumping to the rescue of others. :D Also this series has been so good and I'm so happy it exists! You should try Taiwan. They put in small drinking cups with lids on them. Only the ones that cost like $30 get a small cubicle. So what I do is I go to the counter with all the fish that look like they're about to die because their water is not clean and I asked them in Chinese to please take this fish and give them clean water because the clean water will make them beautiful. I use very simple Chinese but I can't stand seeing bettas neglected when all the other fish are cared for well.

Hi this is so useful but I have a question, I’m planning buying a betta but I’m wondering if I should buy it from my LFS (they are in little cups) or from a breeder online (a lot more expensive) my worry is that maybe the breeder fish is more sensitive if things aren’t perfect all the time or is used to nicer food or something like that! (Obviously im not planning neglecting my fish but I’m new in the hobby) I have the cycled tank and stuff but I’m worried I’d would be more sensitive that one at LFS and on the other side I don’t want to give money to a store that treat fish soo poorly but I feel bad for the little fishes and I would like them to have a nicer life! What should I do! Help!

He's beautiful! I didn't know Creative Pet Keeping sold her bettas. Thanks for the info. I've been looking for some where else to buy Bettas. It's sad to say but the healthiest reasonably priced Bettas in my city are at PetSmart and PetCo and there's only 1 of each located in my city & I live 3 - 5 miles away from them. Also I don't have a car & it's hard to travel with a fish on a bus & having to walk with it while trying not to shake the poor guy/gall up & stress them out more. I do try not to impulse buy them as I like to have the tank already set up & ready for them to go in as doing a cycle on a fresh setup with an already stressed fish is not ideal & very difficult. Luckily I had a tank already going with some moss balls I bought on line cause yesterday I saw the prettiest purple male veil tail & I just had to have him. How often you see a purple betta in a store? He looks like he's about 7 or 8 months old based on his size comparison to my other that is that age. I had avoided buying any more fish for a while after my goldfish died of old age & disease. Then my daughter got one & I got addicted. Lol. Her first betta died of old age, 2.5 yrs, & her second is a 1 yr old female full of eggs in a 10g tank with 2 mystery snails. She's dark blue with spots on her dorsal fin. All my Bettas were the only ones I've ever seen in any store, & 1 I bought online from a Thailand breeder, with that particular color & pattern.

Question about acclimation. Is it necessary to add water from the tank into the bag before you do put him in? I read one source say you had to put water from the tank into the bag every 4 minutes until its full, empty half of it and do it again before adding the fish. But right here it looks like you only made sure the temperature matched out.

It really depends where the fish came from. If the fish was shipped then no as once the bag is opened the water instantly because very toxic. If the fish is from a store you can do that.

My white crown tail bettas gills won’t close and seems to be breathing heavy (this happened since the day I brought him home). He is swimming and eating like a champ, he also has one little tiny whiter spot that has like 1 lifted scale then all the rest of him...don’t think it’s ich or velvet. Any suggestions ?

Hello! I'm hoping to start my first betta sorority tank, and while doing my research I read a lot that getting females from the same spawn can sometimes help ease aggression, so I was thinking of doing that. Do you know of any places online that would be able to sell me some girls from the same spawn? (that won't break the bank) I'm having troubles finding sites that list that kind of stuff (or list any info on the fish at all). I checked out Creative Pet Keeping (beautiful fish! ) but it seemed like she was mostly out of stock. Thanks!

You could maybe try contacting simply Bettas here on KZfaq, she has a lot of Bettas at the moment so she might have what you’re looking for.

Got a Betta fish yesterday afternoon that has had its fins clamped since then. I had a busted heater but replaced it today. Do you know how long it might take before the betta gets comfortable? Or at which point I should get worried?
@Lifewithpets72

It can take them a day or two to settle. As long as your tank was cycled and the temperature is at 78f-80f then he should settle quickly.

Love the video series. I have a question come up though. What happens if you go through the tank cycling and have this beautiful tank. You get the Betta and it dies for whatever reason. Do you have to start the cycling process over again?
@Lifewithpets72

No, the tank will remain cycled as long as there is a source of ammonia.

Love those long thin plants. What are they called? Also are there any plants that a betta would eat that they can eat? Any plants that shouldn’t be in a betta tank? I have some plants that I have in water that I thought could be good in a betta tank, but I don’t know what they’re called. The original plant was in dirt, and these are cuttings from it that grew in water. They seem happiest in water though. Didn’t know if they could be in a betta tank or not. Anyway, I should probably check out more of your videos!

It’s anacharis, we sell some plants on our website although they sell out very quickly. All aquarium plants are safe for bettas, they won’t eat them as they’re carnivores.

When I was really little I had a betta. He was a veiltail bought at the store. Obviously I was really young so I didn't know all the care that went into a betta so unfortunatly, with the stuff I know now, I know he lived a poor life.. That being said I got a betta fish last night did all the research and got a proper sized tank and filter.. Unfortunatly I am waiting on a water heater but it should come really really soon, I do live in florida so the temp in my house is pretty warm as it is so he should be good for a few day. So I'm hoping when I get everything I can give this betta a better life now with me as an 18 year old with knowledge under my belt than I gave to my old fish as a 5 year old who wanted a puppy but got a fish.

That’s great! Enjoy your new fish. If you didn’t cycle the tank before adding the fish you will need to do water changes every 2-3 days till it cycles. Cycling typically takes 3-4 weeks. Adding something like safe start or stability will help too. That’s the beneficial bacteria in a bottle which will help kick start the tank.

I tried to save a fish. She is my 6th betta fish and I had the knowledge and experience to bring her home. Except she got really, really sick. I have her epsom salt baths for swim bladder disease, and frozen daphnia and everything. I am afraid she may pass away tonight. It’s just too much for her. :(

How did your new betta make out? Is she still hanging in? I was given a free betta at the pet store this yesterday. It was a drop off from a customer. Missing most of its fins. I hope yours has made it, hope this poor guy does too!

Had a big question and can use some advice, and I don't know how else to contact you. I also don't have the best internet connection right now as I'm relying entirely on my cellphone. I really trust your judgement though and decided to ask here. I did find a video where you suggested a marina heater, and one other type, but was wondering if you have any additional advice. I currently have a ten gallon divided tank with a heater, divided into 3 compartments. I have a 2 1/2 divided with a heater. And two smaller unheated tanks where I'm temporarily holding two fish til I get them in the bigger tank. I had five bettas altogether. I keep the apartment at about 68-72 degrees because I live in an area of california that reaches triple digits in the summer (I have only lived here one month and the apartment will probably be kept warmer as the weather cools down). Last week we went out of town for the week. I did water changes and left thorough instructions for my brother who came every other day to feed and check on the fish. I bought timers for the lights. However we left the air conditioning off to save money. I figured the bettas don't mind a little heat, and I trusted the heaters to regulate the temperature and shut off when it got warm. Apparently I was wrong. My brother called me half way through the week and told me two of my fish (the two in the 2 1/2 divided) had died. He pulled the fish and buried them. And left everything as it was so I could see what happened. I came home at night. My apartment was 97 degrees, and the tank in question was 100 degrees. It was no wonder why my fish had died. While it was warm, the fish in the 10 gallon was ok, and it wasn't as hot. Now one of my fish in the smaller temporary tanks is fine. But the other one is stressed from the temperature fluctuations I think. He has a scale that is white and bumpy, and a little white on the tip of one of his fins. I started treating his tank for ich. I unplugged both heaters for fear of a malfunction and I'm at a loss as to what to do. I work at a petshop chain and I got aqueon heaters. I had a coworker who told me the heaters are notorious for overheating. Another coworker told me to just not use heaters. I feel like the warmth makes them happy and a maintained temperature reduces stress and illness. I'm a bit worried about this happening again though. Should I keep the heaters? Get new ones? And just take precaution next time I leave? Find a different way to heat them up? Just looking for some advice. Any would be appreciated.

If your apartment is kept at 68-72f then you need a heater in the tanks. It was the heat in your apartment that caused the problem. By turning the air con off the tanks would have heated to the temperature of your apartment. Bettas can withstand temperatures of up to 88f with no problems. After that it gets too much for them. Maybe next time when you go away leave your air con switched on but turn the temperature up to 82-84f. That way you're still saving money but your bettas should be ok.

Lifewithpets Thank you for the response. I'm gonna turn the heater back on in the empty tank and monitor it for a few days and maybe do a little more research on heaters. I might invest in a new one. I will probably take your advice on the air conditioning next time I leave. Feel so bad my fish had to go that way. I don't want it to happen again. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me.

Sometimes when i am starting a brand new betta tank that isn't cycled, I will add the store water to jump start the cycle, but that only happens when I don't do a fishless cycle, which isn't very often.
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 6 жыл бұрын
Adding in store water will not jump start the cycle. There is very little bacteria in the water column so the amount in the bag will have little to no affect in the tank. If there are no other fish in the tank I guess it doesn't matter to much but you might be adding unwanted parasites etc.
