Why do photographers do most of their work in Lightroom or Photoshop? And what makes people choose one over the other. Is Lightroom best, or is Photoshop used for most photography edits? Here, I’m going to answer the lightroom vs photoshop question by showing portrait and landscape examples to inform you of what one would suit your work best.
Let’s get your photography stacking up against the best out there, by showing you why and what program to use for different types of photography. Lightroom vs Photoshop? That is the question! Or is it?

Another great job from Marc! I went trough the Lr and Long Exposure courses from TSOP. In one, learned Lr and on other, besides the long exposure techniques, I also learned to "play" with Lr and Ps together. Thx to Marc! Excellent training courses presented by an outstanding teacher!

Thanks for the video. It helped me understand what I need. I was trying to decide whether I should just get Lightroom or the Photography package Adobe offers and add more storage later. I'm excited to dig in. I appreciate you being sensitive to the editing of models. It is ubiquitous and insidious. Doing things like brightening eyes, adjusting clothes, or doing things that can easily be done with makeup are all golden. It's when the bodies start changing that the real problems occur. But I appreciate your mentioning it.

I use both, but especially use PhotoShop to use "open in PS as layers and add maps in order to combine pictures into one where you use a brush on the map to add part of the underlying picture to to top picture. I have not found out how to do this in Lightroom. Thus, lightroom for basic editing and syncing a bunch of pics with same edits, then open in PS as layers.

Hello! Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Lightroom allow you to retouch things you mentioned at around the 3:00 mark as well ? I've only recently started using Lightroom myself and I've found that it allows you ( must be a recent feature ) to detect a subject and then to apply masks/Layers to different parts of the body. I could easily apply masks to iris, sclera, hair and face with the press of the "detect subject" Feature, which then allowed me to have control over those aspects, making a portrait look much like the photoshop version you presented :) . Great video comparing the two !

Why would the combination of LR and PS be superior to say PS alone? PS do have the whole LR build in using smart objects, though not being able to utilize the LR cataloge database. There we are forced to work in the PS OS system's general library through Bridge. I see no benefits adding LR in parallel. Anyone?

I dunno ( I know this video is old) but It seems more like Photoshop is the must have. You can do 70% of what lightroom can do in photoshop as for file management im sure there's free offering that can do something similar as far as sorting and labeling photos. Though of course as you said using lightroom and photoshop is more ideal!

Is Photoshop just for some healing? I really do not think that Lightroom is just for some global adjustments as is clear from your other tutorials themselves. But I think Photoshop is for some geeky features to use. Other than that, you can do everything else in Lightroom, especially in landscape photography. But a great video nonetheless. And it is always pleasure to watch you.

Interesting video, thanks. I have tried lightroom in the past as well as other software. I only work on a series of photos at a time, usually holiday photos or days out. I personally find the copying of all of my photographs back as thumbnails that I no longer want to work on annoying. I file all of my photos onto 3 separate hard discs and put them into year folders and then folders with date and description in this format say 2021.10.31 Day Out At Spooklacular, seeing 21 years of photographs as thumbnails would drive me crazy and I am never going to want to work on them ever again in most circumstances. For me either a simple fix of a photo is usually enough and then when I have time for something more creative, I would always use Photoshop or similar Free software. I just do not see a need for lightroom in my life, but I can see it could be a help to a professional who has repeat work, but again I work in Architecture and projects are arranged by year and job number and potentially can be grouped by the client if needed, so the photo management for me would again be second fiddle to Photoshop.

Right! Why use any software for our photos? Why don't we take pictures like we used to without any alterations afterwards? Why go back and change the past/history? Isn't that cheating? Isn't that ruining photography? Photography was something that required skill years ago and now we can fix our "mistakes" or what we don't like afterwards. Please forgive my ignorance. Well that's just one ideology...Post production is another. You can take great photos without post edits.. But you're effectively at the complete will of well "reality" your photos will always be grounded in reality (not that that's a bad thing) but it's simply the truth. Post edits allow you break free of that "reality" scope as well as save bad photos or make "ok" photos appear "great". I solemnly believe you shouldn't place limits on your self especially in a creative atmosphere it's well and fine to have a preferred way of doing things or have a taste for what you feel is best. Of course good edits start off with a good photo, someone who does post production should always strive to take the "perfect" photo because that means less "destructive fixes" and a cleaner canvas to edit/add. Which means less work ultimately.

This is a serious question. Please don't answer with some form of "To each his own." I want to know why anyone needs Lightroom at all if you already have Photoshop, which installs with Bridge (for organizing, kewording, star-rating, libraries, favorites folders, etc, etc.) and Adobe Camera Raw which IS Lightroom. When you have all of that, as well as Camera Raw inside of Photoshop which can be applied as a filter, what is the advantage to having another program which effectively duplicates what you already have with your Photoshop install? Why is having another Camera Raw an advantage? Obviously, if you don't have Photoshop and only need to develop and touch up raw files, Lightroom is the way yo go. But if you have Photoshop installed, why not just use the Camera Raw that came with it and skip Lightroom? Eidt: If in fact Lightroom is so much more than Camera Raw, then why not a video contrasting Lightroom with Camera Raw, instead of Lightroom and Photoshop which are entirely different programs?

I come from both eras in photography and basically all being digital does is help us to achieve better photographs like some of the professionals of the time shooting film could only achieve. I have worked in B&W printing and you can mask off overexposed areas to get detail in clouds and bring details out of shadows. In the past, we have extensively used filters over lenses to get great sunsets or capture perfect soft and dreamy skin tones. I agree that if pushed too far then maybe the results can be too unrealistic. Printers in the past adjusted colour and saturation etc, so in reality, all Digital allows us to do is to enhance what the sensor pics up (Which can be unpleasant and unrealistic) My Canon 850D for instance captures a dull almost grey centred image with lots os scope for getting the full detail out of the image to get full white and black tones and a nice spread of colour. It is only something that a professional printer worth his or her salt would have been able to do in the past by exposing different amounts of colour onto the film. The great advantage in the digital age is being able to eliminate items like a stray piece of rubbish ruining a shot taken on holiday or getting rid of that spot on your nose that appeared on your wedding day. When I was young I did not have access to specialist printers and if I could take 28 pictures a month I was lucky. I hope this gives you some inspiration into taking up photography again. You will be able to take as many photographs as you like and also edit them to the limit that suits your requirements. I never look back to using film, so sad that I was unable to enjoy photography due to the cost of developing photos all of those years ago. If you have a reasonable smartphone why not start your digital world with that, as there is a lot of apps like Photoshop and lightroom that are free to use for basic edits, the world is your oyster :)
