Noland Arbaugh, a 29-year-old quadriplegic who has a Neuralink brain-chip, demonstrates during a livestream how he is able to control his laptop cursor with his mind to play chess. Arbaugh received the implant in January, after the startup founded by Elon Musk was granted federal approval to test the device in humans. Following the approval from regulators, Reuters reported that US Food and Drug Administration inspectors found problems with recordkeeping and quality controls for animal experiments at the company.

@jonassteinberg3779
@jonassteinberg3779 11 күн бұрын
I don't think it's being shrugged off, it's just that it has a very, VERY long ways to go? I mean theoretically it makes sense: we have the micro tech now to put pins in a human's working brain and convert electrical (analog) signals from it into digital, just like how any other form of analog to digital conversion works. And then do computer programming with those digitalized signals. I'm sure if it was generalizable and not constrained to one bespoke project after another and also probably lacking tons of basic features, many of which may not even be possible now, that there'd be more coverage of it. Right now it seems it's an an extreme proof-of-concept state.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 9 күн бұрын
@@jonassteinberg3779 Proof of concept is the hardest step, however. Once we establish that, the very long time to go shrinks a lot. Especially in an area driven by advances in digital tech.
@jonassteinberg3779
@jonassteinberg3779 9 күн бұрын
@@squamish4244 I'm not sure proof of concept is the hardest part. In my field proof of concept can be easy or hard depending on the system. A lot of times the proof of concept is potentially kept extremely simple. In other words: the engineer will know something can work in a simple fashion (proof of concept), but "productionizing" it, i.e. getting it ready for market, may involve additional challenges. That's why they call it a proof of concept: it's just a toy, basically. And this tech seems very nascent, like a proof of concept.

@@yudoball Actually it is rather simple, they tell him for example to move his hand left, right etc and record the signals from the implant, then something like very simple artificial neural network (not like chat gpt, more like something from 1980s when they were just invented, very simple stuff by todays standards) is trained to map those signals to the corresponding mouse movements or whatever you want to control with it, then brain does the rest actually. As he says himself at first he tried consciously move his finger to click or whatever was mapped to "finger moving" brain signals pattern, but after a while his brain gets it and adapts so he can just think where he want to move the mouse and it is moving there, most likely like learning to ride a bike, at first you consciously try not to fall, but after a while you brain gets it and you doing it subconsciously without thinking what muscle to move.

While precise details of how the Neuralink chip works may evolve over time as the technology advances, here's a general overview of how such devices typically function: Implantation: The Neuralink chip is designed to be surgically implanted into the brain. The surgery involves drilling small holes into the skull and inserting thin threads (electrodes) into specific regions of the brain. Electrode Array: The chip contains an array of electrodes that are connected to thin, flexible threads. These electrodes are designed to detect and stimulate electrical signals in the brain. Recording Neural Activity: The electrodes are capable of recording the electrical activity of neurons in the brain. This recorded neural activity can provide insights into brain function and can potentially be used to decode thoughts, intentions, or control external devices. Stimulation of Neurons: In addition to recording neural activity, the electrodes can also stimulate neurons by delivering small electrical pulses. This capability could be used for therapeutic purposes, such as treating neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease or depression, or for enhancing cognitive functions. Wireless Communication: The Neuralink chip communicates wirelessly with external devices, such as smartphones or computers, using Bluetooth or other wireless protocols. This allows for real-time monitoring of brain activity and enables control of external devices via thought commands. Data Processing and Interpretation: The neural signals recorded by the electrodes are processed and interpreted using sophisticated algorithms and machine learning techniques. These algorithms analyze the patterns of neural activity to extract meaningful information, such as movement intentions or sensory perceptions. User Interface: Neuralink aims to develop user-friendly interfaces that allow individuals to interact with the implanted device easily. This could involve smartphone apps or other intuitive interfaces that enable users to control devices or applications using their thoughts. It's important to note that while Neuralink has made significant progress in developing brain-computer interface technology, there are still many technical and ethical challenges to overcome before these devices become widely available for clinical or consumer use. Additionally, the specific details of how the Neuralink chip works may continue to evolve as research and development efforts progress.

Isn’t moving a cursor with the mind really old news in this field? Neuralink is doing what other companies did in the early 2000s 🥱
@GeorgSimon-nk1hi
@GeorgSimon-nk1hi 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the concept of using brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to control cursors or other devices with the mind is not new and has been a subject of research and development for several decades. The field of BCIs has seen significant advancements since the early 2000s, with various groups and companies working on technologies that allow for interaction with computers or machines directly via neural signals. However, what makes recent developments, such as those by Neuralink, noteworthy is the potential for significant improvements in terms of the interface's resolution, speed, safety, and user-friendliness. Neuralink, and similar companies, aim to develop more sophisticated, minimally invasive devices that can be used more reliably and comfortably by individuals over longer periods. These improvements could offer higher precision in control, better integration, and potentially more applications, such as more nuanced control over prosthetic limbs or other devices, beyond just moving a cursor on a screen. The novelty in these recent advancements lies not necessarily in the basic concept of mind-controlled devices but in the significant technical improvements and the broader, more ambitious applications envisioned for these technologies. These developments promise to push the boundaries of what's possible with BCIs and could lead to more transformative impacts on medicine, rehabilitation, and human-computer interaction.
