i couldn't think of a better analogy but imagine if the movie makers of sonic the hedgehog were ignorant to the critcism and released the original version. they listened to their audience and put enough effort to please the audience. surely we all know the aftermath. now i'm in no way trying to undermine lilly's hard work and her frustration. but maybe you should listen to ppl who's criticizing u, no matter if they're someone professional or someone who's from a "community". it just makes u look arrogant if u brush away all criticism as negativity, whether it's constructive or not

Ironically, her ignoring feedback coming from the audience was also one of the main criticisms. In hindsight I can see that she couldn't have fixed the show, simply didn't have the resources.

The hustle culture became so toxic... The reason why at one point I stopped watching Lillys content was because I felt so uncomfortable listening her promoting this obsessive overworking culture. Loved every moment of this interview!

I got full body chills when Lilly spoke about her grandfather admitting the fact that he was wrong because this is a very rare phenomenon in Indian household (maybe once in a lifetime opportunity). I would give anything to experience first hand. I can relate to Lilly on so many levels. I'm an ambitious Indian queer(not out yet) teen who dreams of achieving many of these firsts in my family. This does puts a toll on me mentally and physically but the end goal is worth it. A good amount of people have their eyes on me and they are eagerly waiting to witness my failure and experience the satisfaction of their point being proven that I'm a lost cause. I get nervous & afraid often but I'm not ready to quit yet.

Her show made her race and sexuality the main premise … which came of so try hard especially when her core demo was 11-15 when she was on KZfaq I’ll still always admire her work ethic and most of the things she did up until the talk show but I stopped following her when I was sixteen because there was such a disconnect between the real her and her online persona so glad I got to see this side of her x

I agree, I remember watching her when I was younger but my disconnect here was how she says sooo many ppl relied on her to show a communities experience but if I remember correctly on her way to the top she kept making her self a champion of those community and minorities so it’s kind of 50/50 for me, it’s the communities fault for thinking she was gonna capture it all and her for building her platform off of saying she was speaking for them, and she still does even in this interview rather than just saying her experience

Interesting how Lily describes having unrealistic expectations projected on to her growing up, and then found her adult self in an environment where the same thing happened again (hosting the late night show). Human beings, and the subconscious mind, are fascinating. Great interview.

@@amdimilker5773 have you watched the interview? She wasn't necessarily terrible. She even admitted that the content wasn't good. But she didn't have full creative control when it comes to TV. When you compare the two. Lilly's youtube channel was better than her TV special.

I've always loved the unpretentious honest raw side of Lilly most, even more than the comedy. Seems like she's relaxing into being herself again and hope the world gives her many better opportunities to shine.

Loved the last 7 minutes of this interview the most. I feel like so many of us just expect so much from others without any compassion for the fact that they may be on a learning curve. You can't just write people off, especially if they make honest attempts to make it right.

Totally identify with Lilly, when she was talking about how she felt she owed people to stay in KZfaq. I think this is something that gets most of everyone in their careers stuck and believe they should stick where they are because if not they are ungrateful or they don't deserve that change. She is such an inspiration for pushing through that and pivoting just as most successful people allow themselves to do that.

Lilly has been relatable ever since I started watching her content at 14 years old. Being raised in an asian family strict with accomplishments as one's value made me unconsciously "disruptive" when I realized that I never wanted to be perfect, getting the highest scores in school and everything. I lost my motivation when I lost the idea of being accepted by the family. But this woman still strives for perfection for her passion, she fails and gets up stronger than before. You've been a great inspiration in my life. So I do hope that regardless of all the bad criticisms you creators get, please know that there will always be someone in the world that gets inspiration from you and gets encouragement from your words and content. Hoping for more success for both of you ♥

Completely in denial. 'Most shows are allowed multiple seasons to find their feet'......completely untrue. 95% of shows don't even make it to television, and 95% of the shows that do get a first season don't get second. 'It's difficult for minorities'.....says the lady whose show was based mainly on her ethnicity and sexuality, and despite how mind-bogglingly awful the first season was, was STILL given a second season. If anything it sounds like privilege.

I have been watching Lilly for a very long time probably over seven years. She was one of the first KZfaqrs that I loved watching she was great when I was a kid. But then I grew up and just saw her everywhere media-wise and I never fully got to know her and her story. There was always that question mark of who she really is and who’s behind the whole front. and this episode was a bit eye-opening to how she operates and how she operated during her peak success so it was insightful and I have more respect for her. I think she has good ways to do things. I’m Indian myself and have a very similar background so she did disappoint me in that aspect when the show came out but this gives more explanation so good for you Lily.

I've been an avid subscriber of Lilly back in 2015 and I really admired her for her hustle. and ngl, she inspired me to be more like her. I met her at the KZfaq Fanfest back in 2017 and we only had a short interaction and it was super quick 'cause she was under the clock. but she and her team were super nice ❤ it's been a while since I've followed everything that Lilly does, and I'm glad you featured her here. it felt like catching up with an old friend. I definitely can see that she's more settled with herself now and not overcompensating like she seemed to do more in the past (just by comparing what she showed to the public at the time). this is such a refreshing conversation and I'm super glad about her progress and all her achievements 🤍

You can't say people didn't like you because you're a minority. It's called a first impression for a reason. You can't expect people to watch a crappy first season, then come back and watch an ok second season, and keep rooting for you. The show just wasn't good. Why create a show that you know wasn't good and expect people to like it?

I like Lilly a lot, and loved her KZfaq channel, but her late night show was a mess. It did not showcase her talents; it was a disservice to her. She’s correct, I made up my mind after the first season, so I missed the improvements. It’s so nice to hear her explain what was going on. I’m happy to see her hit more successes! As always, an insightful interview.

Been a big fan of Lilly and her hustle since the beginnings of KZfaq, she was out there doin it 💪🏼 mad respect. She used to say in her vlogs that she was workin, and it showed. She was in fact superwomannnn, she always kept it so real with her lists of things to do you could tell she was working and making things happen which led to her show bc there are so many ppl on KZfaq that could have had a show and broke the wall from online to tv but she did it bc she is strong and open and hardworking and willing to make the sacrifices to accomplish things that other pole may have not been able to. She was the first woman from Canada, and woman from a background of Indian culture and woman from online who did the darn thing. Good on you Lilly, you a true hustler

Lilly strikes me as the type of individual that is neurodivergent. So much of what she says, I can relate to. In the way her mind works and the way, she operates as a person. I questioned for so many years, why am I different? why am I like this? I found out I have ADHD last year lmao. Even if Lilly isn't neurodivergent, she's definitely someone that's the prototype in her family line. She's the cycle breaker, she sees beyond her conditioning and actually wants to ask and answer the greater questions about purpose.

That’s why I don’t judge anyone because we are literally all trying to figure stuff out. I didn’t like the show but not because of the hate, I just happened to fall off of Lilly’s content around 2016~ because her comedy didn’t resonate w me anymore 😂 but I always had love for her. I’m going to admit that I did think she was trying too hard to be something she wasn’t and that’s why it fell flat for me i could sense that i mean everyone could see it but I just imagined her being nervous as hell and just trying her best to stay on script. if you’re reading please just be yourself mamas, take it easy you’re naturally funny and a beautiful soul!

I like Lilly but no disrespect she doesn’t speak for all Indians she’s painting the whole Indian culture as misogynistic and rigid that’s just not true. It’s Lilly’s family that held these backward cultural beliefs not all Indians please make that distinction

As much as I respect her achievements and accolades and there is much to be impressed about....she is still operating from a glass that is half full....which is perfectly understandable. She has never gotten over the fact that at birth, she was not welcomed by every member of her family. Even now, as a successful adult she is championing perfection to the ninth degree. I wish her peace of mind and senerity as she moves through her life.

This was a very thought provoking episode. I’m surprised to hear she was cancelled for a genuine error in a situation she was clearly misaligned with, whereas Jay Shetty who deliberately plagiarised wasn’t.

I also noticed how "shameful" it became to fail. I'm not talking about the "I failed then I succeeded", no just a simple plain fail. What's so wrong about a human trying something and failing at it???? What's so horrendous about it????

I watched Lilly back in the day but then grew out of her content when it became the same jokes over and over and just a bit young for me. I didn't hear about her again until years later when she had her late night show and all the memes, commentary videos and then when she got cancelled on twitter. Not gonna lie I did find her majorly cringey for a while but it's nice to see she recognises her faults and she's doing the work to become better. Amazing interview as always!!!

Has literally no one ever noticed that she says disTrupt instead of disRupt? Because she says the word a lot and how come no one has ever corrected her? Unless it's a part of a canadian dialect or something that I'm not aware of but I've never ever heard someone say disrupt in this way.

I also realized during the pandemic that everything I created, who I became (labels, personality, and all) was created based off my surroundings and conforming or people pleasing. That's a tough pill to swallow. I still operate that way in many ways subconsciously or when I don't have the energy to handle the consequences of rebelling, but I appreciate the drastic shift at the time that has led me to create smaller daily actions that are making me the person I am today.

Hearing Lilly talk about how Never Have I Ever had to be made in a way that it was palatable to a wider audience in order for progress to be made and pave the way for other South Asian stories to get greenlit in mainstream television was very eye-opening and thought provoking.

Hi everyone! Well what can I say. I'm in my 60s but I thought Lilly conversation was great. At first I couldn't keep up with her energy, I felt out of breathe. When the interview finished I had a smile on my face. Believe it or not I could relate to quiet a few things. Sometimes I think we expect others to be like carbon copies of ourselves. Thank you both.
