Limited Palette Example - Oil Paints
Here is an example of a limited palette for oil paints. Although somewhat challenging to work with in the beginning, it will yield amazing results for you as you are forced to learn color mixing.
Give it a try and hope this helps!

Why Asphaltum over Burnt/Raw Umber? The transparency? I'm also a big fan of Neo-Megilp. Rublev makes some really nice thixotropic gels, too.

Hello ibanz2010 - The Asphaltum is a fantastic deep, dark, transparent brown. Since it is darker, it is more versatile in my opinion for color mixing, producing chromatic black, glazing, etc. I would highly recommend that you give it a try, buy a small tube and experiment. I have yet to try the Rublev offerings, it is on the list!

Nice video! Have you ever tried Transparent Oxide Brown (PR101, WN has it, the darker version of PR101, much darker then Tr. Red Oxide) or Transparent Maroon (PBr25, WN has it) ? I bought one small tube of each to give them a try. Both dark browns in mass tone, but the TM has more red and the TOB is more of a chocolate brown. I wanted a Burnt Umber type of color that didn't dry fast, cause of the way I paint. Also, I tend to prefer colors that dont dry matte so fast too, like the regular blacks do. So, im eager to try them out and see if they will suit.

I cannot say for certain I have tried those particular pigments. What is your favorite at this present time given your painting style?

@@edheim87 i'll receive those tubes of pr101 and pbr25 in about a a month, so ill get back to you on that. I use perylene black pbk31 and really like it. But it is not black, its a rich dark blue green, but i find it more useful then traditional carbon blacks, cause its a transparent color, very good mixer.

Isnt Asphaltum the same as transparent brown oxide?

Hi there! Thank you. I'm starting to do plein air and wondering if there is a limited palette you prefer for landscapes and waterscapes. I'm sure it depends on the weather etc. But I plan to attend a plein air event and join some local artists groups who usually paint during the day - partly or full sun. I live in Suttons Bay Michigan where the water is deep blue to aqua. Thanks mucho.

Hi Katdakota9467 - I like to add Cobalt and/or Cerulean blue, Cad Yellow Light / Lemon, and possibly something like a Quinacridone red to my usual limited pallet when painting outdoors. Definitely do some experimenting with color combinations to help you zero in what works best for you.

@@edheim87 Thanks - yes I think I better bring a cool and warm of each primary - just in case... but I'm going to try to stay as limited as possible. Working on values will be enough of a challenge. 😀

Why Quinacridone red over Permanent Alizarin Crimson?

Why do most artists press the life out of a tube by putting pressure on the middle of the tube - common sense would have it just start rolling up the end of the tube - I have noticed this when buying used tubes on eBay the tubes often look like they have been mistreated by some mindless child? I think it's a question of discipline I know because there are a lot of artists that show respect for the product and the tube.

Hello Wolf - thank you for your comment. It does make more sense to start from the bottom and work up. The mid-tube squeeze works up to a point then you need a something like a tube wringer to extract the remaining paint and not be wasteful. I am sure everyone has their personal preferences.

Artists, sheesh. I knew a couple of accountants-no, one was an accountant, and the other sold insurance. They painted evenings and weekends and rolled their tubes from the bottom. What drives me buts is that their toothpaste tubes were all deformed from the middle out.
