Thank you Doug, the image immediately spoke to me and shone through as a peaceful beautiful watercolour amongst a busy YT feed. I am endlessly inspired and will get my materials ready to try following your explanations. I love the understated natural colours in your painting as opposed to bold big flowers which I sometimes go for . Your painting touches a part of me wishing for a peaceful retreat. Many many thanks

I am very new to Watercolour and sketching in general. I love your style and your laid back chat. I love the fact that watercolour by the very nature of it, It never looks perfect. So I dont feel too bad when my work looks shabby.. Its all good fun. Slowly working my way thru your channel.

Its amazing that people lived their lives in there, and the history comes out in paintings. Great video, thank you. I'm looking at old schools at the moment.

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Don't focus too much on the end results. It's the learning and the doing that counts. Keep it up Katie and it is lovely to hear from you.

What stops me is the sketching process. If I tried to draw that building freehand all of the proportions would be wrong. To compensate I then use a grid over the reference photograph and sketch onto a paper grid and then transfer that via Tracedown to watercolour paper which becomes a long process. I wouldn’t even think of sketching a scene in the open air. Any hints and tips on sketching with respect to proportion? Or is it simply, practice, practice, practice?
@dougjacksonart
@dougjacksonart 2 ай бұрын
@@Gordo3958 It's about ways of seeing. I know that sounds a bit wierd but with a bit of tutoring you can teach yourself to see proportions. I am going to be doing some sketching fundermentals at some point so I'll cover that. Thanks for the feedback. It's what keeps me motorvated. Thanks.

#WonkyLinesMatter 😊 I much prefer the ascetic of loose styles to the hyper realistic art. I suppose it's good practice. I can't recall any famous artists who use the style of realism. Most artists are famous for their anti-realisms. Van Gogh, Monet, Basgiat, Picasso, Matisse, etc.

I know what you mean about realism. What's the point when you can take a photo I guess? But ultimately it about what you enjoy doing. If that's hyperrealism or expressive abstract stuff, if it's making you happy, then your in the gravy.

It looks to me as if the sun is almost directly overhead. Strongest shadows on the tree are under the branches. The shadow down the left gable wall seems to be V'd near the floor suggesting the roof line falling away. And the prop across the door doesn't cast anything! I would put the sun at just left of overhead. So you've got it about right!
