Welcome to Urban Sketching for Beginners. This simple step by step guide and simple demonstration. Here we do a simple layered sketch of Salisbury Cathedral through the mist.
Beginning your urban sketching journey can be intimidating but so much fun. Even though the learning curve is steep its the most fun part of the curve.

This guide to urban sketching will give you a brief over view of the equipment and the approach you can take. Urban Sketching is popular and fun way to interact and really 'see' your built environment. With minimal equipment you can head off into your place of residence or vacation space and have a very peaceful time sketching and relaxing.
People often look at art and drawing as the whole process and that can put people off from even trying to create. This simple demo will show the basic stages of urban sketching and how to create an interesting image with line work and watercolour.
Urban Sketching requires minimal equipment and therefore is a very accessible for newbies. It is essentially not only a reflection of your landscape but also what it means to be within the fabric of it. You can include the people, the street furniture and interpret those details any way you want. The sketchbook is a playground. It can also be a very sociable art form with urban sketching groups in most cities.

Salisbury Cathedral is the most beautiful church I have ever seen. I was there as a teenager long ago and never seen a more beautiful cathedral. Thank you for the lovely tutorial.

@@dougjacksonartI’ve started this sketch was using “ rough” as a trial it was good til I added watercolour! Bah! My ink in fountain pen wasn’t insoluble so it’s all a bit grey! Yuk! now but at least could sketch the lobster with the correct ink! We live & learn! Thanks. Just to say I tried to finish it, but, used greens instead of grey/ black for trees & also did the lobster, both ok but, I prefer my lobster! Thanks.
