My dad owned his shop 52 years. He was also a millwright. He was good at what he did the last 6 years he used to tell customers his prices were based on how many Fu**ks he would have to say to finish the job. And odd enough he picked up way more business because people got a kick out of it. Glad to see so many still doing a good hard days work. Unlike how some think 4 hours a day is just oh so much. lol

You see the curve of the conduit has to match the the rotation on the bore welder. It also makes a difference If you're pulling off the top of the roll or off the bottom of the roll of wire. Like I said my wire feeders a little different and I pull off the bottom of it. So therefore I have to go to the right into the bore welder and have the bore welder rotate right. You don't want to unbend the Natural curve of the welding wire when ots inside the conduit If you can help it. What you can do is pull out about 10 ft of wire out of your wire feeder and see which way the wire flips over. It should flip over in the direction of your bore welder or point to your bore welder I mean

When you see a bore wallowed out that bad, it usually indicates the bore was not designed correctly for the load - even with the bushing. That bore has to be at least another 25%" wider to handle the extreme loads

Don't know if any of that wire flip stuff makes sense to you, but when it welds up one bore completely fine and then you move over to another bore and the wire flip is completely terrible, you'll ask yourself why. And the reason is it's because you moved your wire feeder in a different spot relative to the bore welder. And once you find out where that spot is where there is no flip, that is where the wire feeder sits every single time it'll never change.

Sitting in front of your computer look up motor mounts 2122 and 2123. Think of a using those with some bolts and washers to create harmonic dampeners that could be screwed into different threaded holds in your boring bar and be crazy easy to remove or shift to a different location. I worry about your support bearings. About the hydraulic drive unit bearings. The vibration must be vibrating the bearing races and balls.

Wire flip isn't fun. Be behind your bore welder looking at it, have the bore welder rotating clockwise, then have the wire feeding conduit come out and go to your right And make a right angle to your bore welder. And have the wire feeder conduit up about level with the bore welder. It only took me 15 years to figure that out. But it does talk about it in the book as well. You might have to try a different configuration on where your wire feeder is sitting, but that's what worked for me. my wire feeder is a little different,

Very nice! From your videos I understand how line boring works in general, but it's still a total miracle to me that it works in practice - over time you've shown some parts that looked like you should have been able to get anything centered on them with how chewed up they were. A few questions if you don't mind: Did the suspected crack in the smaller bore turn out not to be a crack, or did it cut out just fine? Did you have to run dye on it? Hand-welding the last part of the oval was likely because cutting it out and welding it all back up all around the ID would take a lot more time and wire than pulling out the bar and doing it just in that spot? And that's a big chunk of metal, I'm sure Cat would love to sell the customer a new one, and the customer has thoughts about that idea! haha

The crack turned out to be a scratch. Yes, hand welding that part saved probably 2 passes with the bore welder which is about 2 hours.

So these huge components are cast iron aren't they? Or cast in steel? I'm asking because cast iron is supposed to be a headache to weld yet you're building up the bore with MIG without any trouble or is there a steel sleeve in the larger iron casting and that's what you're working on? Anyway I don't repair Cat frames obviously but I'm really interested to know how this works
@OFW2 ай бұрын
These are cast steel. But sometimes you get one that is cast iron. Cast iron is a pain to weld but it can be done. If it’s cast iron I try to use an oversized bushing.

Okay, this is obviously a casting and I’m guessing it’s cast steel. My questions are: Would this work at all on cast iron using steel mig wire? Have you ever come across a casting of this type that was cast iron? And finally, Which method do you use to determine whether it’s cast steel or cast iron?
@OFW2 ай бұрын
It’s definitely cast steel. You can bore weld cast iron with silicone bronze wire or a high chromium content like stainless steel. But I would try to avoid welding on cast iron as much as possible. Hopefully just make oversized bushings. I use a drill bit and a grinder to tell cast steel from iron.
@williamthomas94632 ай бұрын
Thank you for the reply. I use the same methods but there are times that I’m still not 100% sure. I tested a piece recently and a brand new Dewalt cobalt bit wouldn’t touch it! I ended up declining the job because of what the customer claimed they could purchase the new part for. Be blessed.
