Adorama Photography TV Presents Photo on the Go with Joe McNally. Join Joe in Hong Kong as he explains how to test the line of sight with a built-in camera flash and a SB-900 flash. Watch as he tests the strength of the built in flash to get the line of sight TTL transmission, and then uses his SB-900 as a commander in order to "talk" to the flash on his subject.
It is important to use a TTL transmission when taking photographs of a subject that has a large depth of field. By using this technique, you can stack the background lighting and color in close to your subject in order to achieve the photo you need. The TTL transmission will make it easier for you to capture your subject from a distance.

I always heard the praise of The SB900 but I never got my hands on one. in 2012 I was all about Canon in a bad way. You know Canon or nothing. Joe Thank You, Hope to see more of your storytelling session from @Adrama

Good video. For just a second there I thought I was smarter because I thought you should take off the bounce dome and maybe zoom the flash, but you were making that point all along. 😁👍

As long as your flash receiver isn't pointed at the sun or the commander in line with the sun behind it to the flash you'll get a good response. Maybe not at 150ft away like Joe did here but certainly at 50ft.

the receiver is actually on the side of the flash, not the huge red panel in the front. I think it's Syl that mentioned it before

How do you do that? I have an sb-600 and haven't found a way to activate it with any other flashes, on or off camera. I'd greatly appreciate any input into this matter. thanks.

You have to go into your camera settings Bracketing/Flash - Commander Mode -Built in Flash to TTL. Plus you have to set your SB-600 to slave mode - Press Zoom and minus sign until you see OFF and a wavy arrow - press mode to turn it ON. Done. Work best without lots of direct light between you and the flash. Google Nikon SB-600 slave setup if you run into problems.

I noticed Raymond is holding the entire flash unit toward his face and NOT the receiver toward Joe. You may get more range if you turn the receiver toward the trigger flash.

everythig is ok but most people need to know the tips for shooting CLS in a bright sunny day where the com between flash and commander is blocked by the sun. That would be nice... to hear how a pro solves this kind of trouble with or without expensive radio triggers. Cheers.

Hey Adorama!! How about producing these videos with equipment we can relate to, like D7000 or D3200 and SB 700 and SB 600 or the Canon like models. I'd bet most of us that view these videos cannot afford a D 4 or SB 910.

I would never rely on TTL. I noticed he had an assistant, I would be using a Profoto 7B with a radio slave. That's just me but I guess Nikon is paying him.

you said you used the 70/200 to compress and stack up the neon lights behind her, and then you take shots of her with none of the neon lights in the shot, also i guess all the crap people say about hand holding the D800 is bull, enjoyed the video

LOL... REALLY!?! People have problems with optical transmission during the "DAYLIGHT" hours, however Joe chooses to use a demonstration during the darkness of the night time hours. Way to go Joe! That's sarcasim for "What a joke!"
