Cancelling doesn't exist anymore. It's a thing people claim happens, and then nothing actually does. Cancelling was a thing for two years, five years ago; now it's a word that indicates no actual punishment will follow. In another five years it will be like the hula hoop: an outdated generational trend that everyone has heard of but no one has actually seen unless they have cleaned out the garage.

As a non Asian, I respectfully and sincerely say that in all of the places on KZfaq and the Internet where I see the term used (I see it a lot) it was ONLY used as a term of endearment, never used in a derogatory, or insulting way. It was always used by someone who is a TwoSet fan identifying with, or seeking out other TwoSet community fans in the comment sections. It has been connected to the TwoSet community from around the world by people of various ethnicities, from young to old and from every race. Whenever I see it, I and others from the TwoSet community respond in a positive way acknowledging each other. I always smile when I see it because it has been a wonderful thing, something that breaks down barriers and connects people from around the globe. Of course, I have not seen every occasion when the term has been used. Nevertheless, I hope that Brett and Eddy will not change anything and we Ling Ling wannabes will hold firm and not allow this endearing term to be taken from us.

Imma be upfront: Ling Ling is RACIAL, but it is NOT RACIST. Racism implies hatred being the motivation behind actions, words, or systems. Racial implies that something is cultural. Ling Ling is an Asian name; it is a term invented by two Asian-Australian musicians; the definition is to identify children and adults who have trained since very young to become very talented musicians. XD
@seraphywang4638
@seraphywang4638 Жыл бұрын
Its like when people say “There’s always an asian better than you”. Its not meant to be racist, its meant to poke light fun at people who are better than you. Obviously that includes non-Asians but the joke derives from the highly competitive atmosphere of Asian schooling where everyone competes to be the top.

@@seraphywang4638 I dont think that is proper for someone outside the asian community or the joke inside this channel to say it? Cause it's either a intent to hurt or pure ignorance. The n word has more levity but lets not pretend that asian racism is not as dangerous

@seraphywang4638 Жыл бұрын
@@laum5371 Honestly, as an asian, I dont care much if someone jokes around about LingLing. Sorta like when non-asian people say “There’s always a asian better than you.” I know its a joke and not intended to be racist or disrespectful in any way. Sure, its a racial stereotype but jokes can be based off of stereotypes without people getting massively offended like snowflakes. These jokes are nowhere close to as bad as the history of the N word. It can be annoying but it really isnt worth dealing like its serious

Ling Ling is actually a term usually used by Asian people >>> I can ensure you not such a thing in China, Hongkong, Taiwan or Japan, there is a term something like " the child next door "or "someone's child" that has a simulated meaning, but not LING LING as an asian who lived in hongkong, the first time i heard about" LING LING " was in two-set violin video

@@naoe0305 oh yeah definitely. I thought it was obvious that it was a two-set violin original character, I'm just saying, my answer from bing was totally different. I'm from Japan, I've never heard that word before. I think I've seen a chinese restaurant with that name but I can't tell. Btw, ChatGPT Plus answer to what is Ling Ling: "Ling Ling" is a fictional character created by Brett Yang and Eddy Chen of the KZfaq channel TwoSetViolin. This character is often humorously referred to as a prodigiously talented violinist, embodying the ultimate level of musical skill and discipline. The term "Ling Ling" has become a running joke and a meme within the classical music community, often used to refer to an impossibly talented or over-practicing musician. For example, musicians might jokingly compare themselves or others to Ling Ling in a self-deprecating or humorous way, highlighting the extreme dedication and talent supposedly possessed by this fictional character. It's important to note that "Ling Ling" is a purely fictional and humorous creation, and the references to this character are usually made in a light-hearted and playful context within the music community.

The way you play those Moonlight Sonata notes on violin is by rapidly backing away from the audience to Doppler shift the violin down an octave. Assuming the audience is sitting still backing away from them at Mach 1 would do the trick.

As an Asian American, I can definitely see how Bing’s generated response can resonate with other Asians - it’s not an invalid point, especially since racism/ harmful stereotypes and consequences do exist. There are definitely people out there who genuinely do not recognize the diversity of Asian people and write off their skills, hard work or successes as some “inherent/ genetic” trait. However, the term Ling Ling is also applied differently in the contexts of TwoSet. It’s satire of incredibly intense, but at times motivational standards (like practicing 40 hrs) of what your skill level looks like on a pedestal, like on your instrument, but also functions as a representation of awe for other musicians. The point is that the term Ling Ling doesn’t just exist within the TwoSet community (which seems to be the premise of this Bing reply, in this case) which means that it’s not gonna have a standardized, uniform meaning. Ultimately, Asians decide for themselves what interpretations resonate most with them, but a single group of people doesn’t speak on behalf of the entire Asian community, so it’s really about staying respectful if they ever do express that Ling Ling isn’t a term they’re as comfortable with. P.S. I’ve been watching TwoSet since middle school (I’m a college student now), and really appreciate their uplifting content - especially editor-san 🤌🤌🤌

Ultimately anything that has any attachment to race or ethnicity will inevitably be viewed as offensive by someone at some point regardless of context. As much as we can understand to some degree how it may offend within a negative context it still doesn’t mean we should overvalue the opinions of people who disregard context to put themselves in a position of moral superiority. Happens everywhere online, the constant disregarding and twisting of language to demonize and mischaracterize each other, disingenuous people.

@@Saniteee People definitely do mischaracterize one another on the internet, (that could be where the moral superiority piece ties in) like how humans do irl more than we’d like to admit. So that brings us to how assuming good intent can make a difference, while still providing genuine feedback (especially from marginalized communities.) Because racism is also a deeply systemic/ institutional issue (meaning racism isn’t just perpetuated by people but by things like our governance, economy, and education) it is going to be offensive to people (whether the comment at hand is misinterpreted or not) So while overvaluing opinions is an issue, historically speaking, there’s a longstanding legacy where BIPOC’s voices, for example, get gaslit/ dismissed disproportionately to others. Unfortunately, algorithms on platforms like social media incentivize pushing out extremist views because it’s more profitable for those companies (which comes at the cost of minorities.) There’s this super interesting book called The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher that covers some of this
@Saniteee
@Saniteee Жыл бұрын
@@maevd6302 I'm not knowledgeable enough on US/NA historical racism as the term BIPOC is mainly used in the US so I have no actual clue on anything about racism being systemic or institutional in the US. I don't doubt there are lasting damage done in the US. I tend to think of people in general being willfully uninformed and disingenuous when tackling things like racism online which is why somewhat trivial incidents are conflated with serious incidents because a lot of the time the motivations are less about fixing issues and more often about self serving personal interests. The internet has given us the ability to read information, form opinions, draw conclusions as well as post those opinions and conclusions within minutes or even seconds so we never fully process everything and get over the initial emotions or missing contextual information and this feeds into the cycle. I completely agree that social media algorithms contribute heavily to showing extremist views it's just guaranteed to get people arguing about anything and further pushing groups of people apart. I'll check that book out no doubt it's a good read👍

Thanks for another fun video! I know you two get stories like this a lot, but I've wanted to play the violin since I was young. Instead, I went brass and piano. Stopped playing both a long time ago, but I started watching a couple of your videos pre-pandemic and in short, you were partly responsible in me buying a cheap violin and wanting to learn. You broke the common stuffy stereotype associated with classical music and it was refreshing! I found self-teaching from videos lacked any external feedback so I stopped during the pandemic. Found a teacher late last year and have enjoyed the challenge of such a wonderful instrument (even if I currently sound like nails on chalkboard with a side of screeching cats)! Although I'm still early in learning, I can see myself continuing this and am looking for a better violin that will last me longer than the one I currently use. Thank you for reviving my interest in music and the ever so important encouragement to PRACTICE forty hours a day!
