You may not like it, but I do still like your sketch piece too XD I think there’s still merit to “plain” pieces, sometimes it’s nice to see something simple to give the eyes a break. Your other piece is fantastic, no doubt, but it’s a little difficult to take in all at once. I think it may be nice if you revisited your simple mermaid, maybe? Show what the quick sketch is versus a more thought out one of the same basic idea?

I had the same idea like you when I found this older sketch on my laptop I liked her but she could have be a much better artwork, so I totally agree with you - also with the simplicity, not every painting has to have a thousand details!

I think her point was that it lacked refinement. If she made that mermaid painting over again in the exact same way but without rushing, it would probably still look much better just from not being sloppy, being on the right kind of paper, being very purposefully planned, etc.

I kinda needed to hear this. I see people posting faster and faster sketches so I was beginning to feel down because I spend usually 2-4h on a sketch and then another 4-8 in the actual painting on average. I sometimes feel like it takes me so long because I am very bad at it. I've also been scolded by an art teacher for focusing too much on details (which are my favorite part). She kept saying watercolor paintings are meant to be loose and flowy without many details. But your video reminded me that good art takes time and the only thing that matters is getting to a final result that you like. That means using a style you enjoy and taking all the time you need.

Your "rushed" piece is, in my humble opinion, beautiful. The second piece may be more striking because you took your time with it but, again, this is my opinion, the first piece is very good.

It depends really. Well it matters how the artist feels. Still there’s something to be said for simple quick fresh art. Not everything needs to be huge and hyper detailed. Personally I love variety and prefer faster art and getting more done. Still taking time in important pieces is good for balance. How you feel matters most if it’s your time/effort and art! I feel like not every piece needs to be ‘your best’ or aim for being happy with it in a decade that’s more pressure/stressful to me personally than quick sketches daily. Having said that suicidal media has good and bad sides and must be used with caution. I mostly only use KZfaq now as it doesn’t seem to cause me mental health issues.distress and often helps actually. But taking the pressure off having to plastic at least once a week as life does get in the way helped even more.

This is such an important topic. I started an art mentorship to help me improve. The first thing I learned from my instructor by watching is art takes time. Even the decision process takes time. Seeing that professionals even take time completley changed my perspective. I have always known things like speed paints were sped up but the pace of social media made me think oil paintings were made in a couple of hours. This caused me to be so hard on myself. Now that I have committed to not rushing the process I am so much happier. I’m also still proud of older ideas that I maybe could have taken more time on. So I may go back and give them a second try now that I understand they are worth my time. Even if it is not active time working on the piece but time to step away reflect and come back with fresh eyes. Lovely painting by the way!

I’m not that skilled so it’s worth taking my opinion with a grain of salt, but I feel this depends on your approach and what you define as ‘improvement’. Is improvement gaining more skill or the art looking better? Probably both. I’d say, simply taking adequate time to polish a piece will instantly make your art better. But overall improvement comes from challenging yourself and focussing on your weaknesses, that can be done in ‘quick’ works too. In fact, I’d argue you can improve faster when you practice the same thing again and again without paying too much attention on other details. For me it’s a balance, what is my goal? Do I want to study? Then I will (try to) work fast and not loose myself in the work; gain skill faster but don’t have results that necessarily reflect I got ‘better’. Do I want a beautiful result? Then I will take the time necessary to achieve it while knowing I won’t Improve as much because a lot of time is devoted to every area, even the ones I might already be confident in. You can do a 30h piece and it will look great, but if you spend 15 hours of that on rendering, you will gain less skill in construction, composition etc. than doing 15 1h studies of your weak points. What I currently try to do is balance both, studies for my weaknesses and detailed works to enjoy when effort and skill come together and the work pays off. It’s also important to note that speed is a sign of mastery over a subject. You will sometimes see people pop out stunning pieces of artwork in a day, but that didn’t happen over night. The speed they have now is the result of years and years of practice. Just think of some things that feel easier now than they used to. Speed comes with experience but only with things you are familiar with. Even those artists who can ‘sketch’ a detailed character from imagination in 10 minutes would take a lot longer if it was a subject they aren’t familiar with and they acquired this amazing skill by probably drawing certain subjects for decades. You can see it as their art still taking time - tens of thousands of hours that were invested over decades culminating in them breezing through some step that used to take them hours.

that is so pretty! social media is a good thing and a bad thing, can get your art seen by people all over the world, but there is so much stress to try to 'beat' the algorithm and post something everyday, which is not healthy

Wow! You hit the nail! Sometimes I feel frustrated when I see so many works of art published on social media that you think you've been left behind. I have decided not to spend so much time in them. I loved your advice! It's totally true! It is much better that you concentrate on your art work, and be less aware of social media, because sometimes they overwhelm us! Thank you!!! And wow! Excellent work❤️🥰🏆

I am a digital artist, not only what you said is true, but also the fact that I envied people who could come up with a finished colored digital work in just 1-2 hours, my sketches alone take 3 hours, this not only made me impatient, but hate my own art as well.

This video just popped onto my feed, and it's like it was destined for me. For the past several years, I have pursued the "fickle mistress" of social media when posting my art. I read up on algorithms, trends, and how to draw organic traffic to my page. Looking back now, I don't know how I didn't fall into a depressive hole earlier. In spite of all this, I still lost followers, and even worse, I found people stealing my most popular pieces so they could get their own instant gratification. I've drifted away slowly but surely from Instagram and the most demanding social platforms that want to squeeze blood from the artistic turnip; you do not post daily/weekly, they leave! It was a hard road, but I came to the decision I don't deserve to feel this way. Like a machine who can make amazing content at the snap of a finger, and if it bombs online, I am a failure as a person. A very dear friend has come to my aid and with her sensibility, I have thrown away the "social media shackles" that imprisoned me for so long, and coincidentally, I am making the best art I have in years. I am getting comments that are impactful. I'm not attracting hundreds of likes, but it's like for the first time, I'm seen for who I am. Quality vs. quantity cannot be stressed enough. Don't give up your heart and lose your artistic soul in pursuit of massive likes and explosive follower growth, fellow creators. You will feel so much more redeemed learning from what this video tells you

I agree with a lot of things you are mentioning however time spend ≠ good art!! You CAN make a good piece of art within a few hours. It depends on the execution, the skill, the idea, the size, the media, etc... good art does not have to be only pieces that you worked on for days or weeks or even months!

I follow so many artists that I prefer they don’t post too often as I get to enjoy the best of their work. How many people who unfollow artists just because they don’t post often are the kind of people to buy anything from them? On the other hand some artists who only post the very best I feel I wish would post some process clips or shots or the odd sketch in between which are valuable in themselves. The stuff that isn’t a sketch for something or concept and is just to post something though is ugly generally and lowers the quality of Instagram.

Such a great video! I have been an artist long enough to remember what it was like before social media. I got commissions organically, through recommendations of existing clients. I didn't make a lot of art as each piece took a long time, but I enjoyed the process and made the sort of art I loved. It is so different now! Since becoming a mother I don't take commissions and I have the freedom to make whatever art I want, but my mindset has become so influenced by what I see on social media, and the fast pace, that my art has really suffered and I don't know what sort of art to really concentrate on anymore. You have really given me something to think about now and I feel its time to find the artist inside me once more. Thanks for sharing!

Tolles Video!!

English for those who don't understand: Miss X 2 days ago Great video!! And a very important point. Especially the pressure that everything not only has to be done quickly, but also has to be perfect. Just this pressure that everyone is better than me anyway brought me into a real crisis a few years ago and I didn't like my pictures at all anymore. Then I withdrew completely from social media and today I only paint and draw for myself. It's a very liberating feeling especially because now I'm taking the time to really improve and I need a lot of time for that. Especially as a hobby artist with a full time job. But I'm back to a point where I enjoy art and I like my pictures again and that's the main thing ^^ and not the "recognition" through social media.

But it’s made me really rethink what I want to see for my future. As you said-as artists, we still need social media because it’s a huge part of building our business and brands, but I’m really glad to see more people speaking up about this very topic, since it mirrors what I’ve been feeling. I agree with this, especially the impression and illusion that social media makes of the time it takes to make art. School doesn’t help either, but I’m grateful for the teacher I had. He never rushed me, only if the quarter or semester was coming to a close. I took months to finish my first two paintings in my painting class and I am still proud of them to this day. The art I took time to sit down and took my time on I take immense pride on. Even if my other classmate finished their painting in a shorter time with beautiful results, I never tried to let it bother me. Art shouldn’t have to be a race, it should be a journey

Wow, this was such a great reminder, and an absolutely stunning piece you created. Point well illustrated! I've had to take a step back so many times from social media to reset my mindset toward my art. I love the fact you pointed out that you can't control the social media aspect, it's easy to think that if I just post more I'll feel better about it, but it's never proven true. Recently I made a piece that I was extremely proud of, and it got very few views/likes. But it doesn't make me any less proud, and that was an important lesson. Thank you so much for this informative video!

THIS is what my drawing professor in college drilled into our heads, even forcing us to take weeks to finish a piece by focusing on finite details. Art is time consuming but if it’s something you’re passionate about, you won’t mind taking time to make love to it. (Quickies are still okay too!) between working full time and being the head of my household, and raising three children, I don’t have the time I’d love to commit to it. Instead, I fill sketchbooks nearly every 3 months, and maybe churn out one finished solo work in that time period as well. Several works in progress, anxiously awaiting my touch yet again. 😅

Social media does stress me out sometimes and I notice I don’t want to create because I feel the pressure of creating content lol! But then I laugh at myself and realize I’m the one that put that on myself so now I just post a little something 5-6 days a week for fun. I don’t necessarily create a new art piece for it but I will create a new reel around older pieces of work. However, I am going to post less so I can focus a lot more on improving. Oof, I‘m a really slow artist, so I will probably never do videos on my artworks or I‘ll have to edit them. I‘m not even using any Photoshop collabs, but will simply go with what works and what just looks good with the character I‘m drawing etc. I‘ll still need at least 6-12 hours for a simple piece and a few weeks for something more complicated (with 3 hours for a sketch). But what I noticed is that I‘ll improve extremely fast, even tho my drawing pace is really slow. The thing I do for social media is posting the steps I do in between, what also finds interested people.

Yes art takes so long! But when it comes together, wow! It is so worth it. It can be meditative. I've definitely made short cuts like this that messed up my work. Sometimes it forces me to creatively problem solve to fix a rough area. That is great in the learning progress but when you're really focused on making a true, beautiful work of art, you have to plan, take time, and enjoy the process! I have usually not done the best planning before a work and it had caused my work to suffer. Also, I would love to see the older piece brought back to life in a newer rendition of it using everything you have learned! It's a beauitful design

The color palette that you used for this piece of art is one of my favorite set of colors to utilize in my artwork. I think my biggest problem is not trying a wide enough range of palettes and all of my art ends up within the same realm of warm orange tones and cool turquoise. That combination is my bread and butter and I still love it so much, but it makes knowing what to do with other color combinations a bit of a struggle.

I would love to see the mermaid sketch completed because the concept you laid down would look amazing in your current style. I look at the sketchy piece and it doesn't look quite finished. The color concept is nice, but it just looks like a sketch used to bring an idea to life before you tackle the actual piece. I'm not well versed in digital art, however I have tried it. I am more comfortable with old school paper and pencil work to lay down the concepts and for color play. Watching you use software to bring a concept to life seems intriguing and I would like to explore that more. As far as art is concerned, I'd prefer to be drawn into a piece that grabs my attention because of the hidden details and colors. Quick art from social media is pretty to look at, but your work that I am familiar with draws me in and stimulates my attention. I don't feel the need to quickly turn to the next piece, instead I want to examine every part of it. It's the same feeling I have when seeing works from the Masters. I want to know how they created such magnificent pieces with such basic tools. Social media art is like fast fashion, it's pretty but won't last. If you want something that is made of quality and will stand the test of time you must put in the time and effort, and money. It shouldn't be about having more quantity, but to have pieces that are refined and of higher quality. You, too, are a master of your craft and such an inspiration for a budding artist or just a patren of the arts. Thank you for sharing your process and advice.

This is a very sound advice and I'm also trapped in the same dilemma, since I'm doing art for merch. I'm constantly giving target to myself to paint 3 artworks per week (digital and traditional media) to keep up with the sales, it's somewhat a pressure in itself. But at this moment, making more online sales is priority than art quality itself, and I admit it kinda compromise my art improvement. So this advice is really coming at the right time, thanks! :)

I never do a thumbnail, I don't plan, I don't think about color, I have photoshop and access to procreate and I don't use it in the way you do. I just pick up the pencil and draw then paint. Not surprisingly, I usually end up drawing the same thing. I think its because art is not my day job so when I turn to it after working all day, I just want to jump in and not waste precious time. That said, I have been thinking my art is bland and blah and you hit up on all the reasons why so this was extremely helpful.

This video expresses so much of what I feel as artists that I've been following are getting caught up with the Monster Algorithm, 'growing their channel', and unconsciously voracious viewers who have no idea how long things take, and demand more. I think that no ArtTuber can produce more than one video a week (if that many!) without compromising their own artistic creativity. There can't be the time, after filming often hours of video, editing it into a speeded up snapshot of the real work, doing voice-over, dealing with RealLife; and I am deeply saddened by the increasing number of 'brun out' videos appearing in the last 6 -9 months. There's so much 'content' that is just a repeat in a slightly different way to what others have done - the constant art hauls, 'How to draw a ...' , videos (how many eyes do we need to see before we actually pick up a pencil and draw* an eye???), reviews that aren't reviews, but just an unbox and swatch, and if there is a painting, no detail of the process of doing it... Thank you for putting your thoughts into film for us, and for showing us two lovely, though very different pieces of art. Yes, I too, like the mermaid, and hope that you do take that sketch as a 'preliminary' sketch and create her as you know that you can, whether on film for us, or for your own satisfaction.

Amazing piece! Thank You for sharing your thoughts. I actually think the fish girl piece is great! It is a completely different style than your other pieces, but neither is better than the other. Regardless, you make some valid points in this video. As my own skills have improved, I have found that creating a piece of finished artwork that I like often takes a long time!

Gorgeous art and wise words 🌞 I once read somewhere that if you want to make a living of your art, you will likely end up painting what the customers want (not what you want). In the same way, it seems that having to market ones art influences ones art. I appreciate hearing these things because I just do hobby art and sometimes dream about quitting my job. But then I remember that I can paint whatever the fuck I want, and immediately feel better. 😂

This video comes at such a good time when I have been feeling exhausted by trying to please the whims of the IG algorithms. I feel better when I just don't look at IG for a few days at a time, at the expense of the growth of my account of course, but I think it helps me to focus on my art more. Quick question - how do you prevent your watercolour papers from warping? Do you pre-stretch the paper ?

Could vouch, even tho I'm not at her level of artist I still found that my art looked wayyy better when I spend more time on it, I still do the quick sketches and art pieces sometimes but at most it's just to practice and exercise my hand before a really long and challenging piece.

I have a picture of a brightly painted building I've been paining. Attempt 1 I realized it should not be in oil, so I switched to acrylic. Attempt 2 I realized, oh this is gonna be too small on my canvas, I want a bigger canvas. Attempt 3 is going ok. My advice would be to take academic training if you really want to improve your art, because that's what it takes. Even if it's community college.

I used to have thr mindset of, "Get big on social media," when it came to making my artwork. How many likes something might get was my priority. Nowadays, I draw what I'm either in the mood for, or what I think drawing will help me improve. I don't always have something to post like I used to, but going at my pace makes me so much happier. Especially when it means that I have time for enjoying each day. I can't say when the change happened, all I know is that it was so gradual I barely noticed. Maybe it was when I got a job that was helping people behind the scenes. Art was a hobby after that, as helping others was my ultimate priority.

Man this video hit waaayy too close to home. I used to be an artist on instagram but it was so overwhelming to me that i gradually lost interest and moved fully to tumblr because of it. Whenever i drew back when i was an instagram artist, i never actually enjoyed it. And the fact that i am a perfectionist and a slower artist made me feel self conscious about my art, especially with how many "avoid these mistakes when drawing" videos and tutorials always tell you not to be a perfectionist and to draw quickly. So i think you can imagine that this video made me feel a lot better about my art

I see it on my art, that difference hours or months with few hours to give it someone or post it. I always need have correct mood for touching some specific piece or I know that I will spoil it. Once I went against this feeling to have it faster and hours and days of work before I spoiled in 10 minutes.🥴 So it's very correct what you say.😅👍🏻

It’s kind of funny because I was just stressing out about posting on social media. (because my account seems to be getting attention. Not a ton, but a good amount considering that I just started) I do small animatics (for now) using my characters. But my characters aren’t even fully developed and I wanted to work on it, but was stressing out because I needed to make a post to continue getting attention. However, you mentioned that it’s important improving what you want first than getting attached to social media. I think that’s a good reminder.

You really described what im going through rn. Your tips are not the basic "how-to", it is fit for INTERMIDIATE artist. Im in an awkward phase where i know im good but i don't feel satisfied w/ my art. And you pointed it out for me. Its social media! Especially on the art community. When I open my IG, i feel guilty about not having anything to post. And i feel like i have to do what other creators are doing to see growth. But the only thing i have to do to see growth is to leave social media (temporarily) lol. THANK YOU SO MUCH! MORE POWER TO U

Also, there's nothing wrong with your quick faerie sketch, nothing at all. The draftsmanship and color are charming and that's enough for a quick sketch. The real question is, were you unhappy because you weren't doing more finished pieces as well? It seems like, yes, you were unhappy about that and you changed your habits to reach your goals. Good for you. But if a different artist is content to do quick work that isn't finished to the highest standard, that's okay, too.

Unfortunately it's not just to post fast on social media. It's also the issue that many try to copy mediocre pieces of painting that have many likes. So they try to copy the style in hopes of gaining more likes and followers which is also a bad thing.

The problem of prioritizing becoming a content creator versus being an artist...
@EyeLean5280
@EyeLean5280 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure this is a problem, but there was a serious issue with artists failing to improve before the internet too. I think the internet has just become the new thing that people distract themselves with and cling onto in order to avoid the hard work of figuring out what they need to do and then putting in the actual time and effort that advances them. I will say that internet addiction is extremely powerful, so it's probably harder to overcome. Still, becoming a highly advanced artist has * always * been a goal that very few artists ever reach. Most artists, all throughout history, have remained mediocre. That is, in fact, what the word mediocre describes. It describes the upper limit of achievement of most people.

I don't want to sound sour here, but I personnally prefer your fast sketched artwork on 1:55 way better than the one that took longer. You shouldn't mistake effort=>quality=>impact. I often work long on my paintings too, but at some point it gets just stale. There is a perfect moment to stop and when its over it feels soulless. I mean, yes there are more detailes and things going on in the painting with the snow tigers, but does it really have the same impact? The simple beauty of this fantasy figure with her interesting view does captivate me way more than this, sour people would say, "mash up" of random things. I personally often enjoy my fast and "not serious" sketches more, as my mindset often ist too stiff when doing a "real piece". I also think that yous shoud, rather than to fiddler together your pice in Photoshop with pictures and then paint it, do more compositional skethes first and then, only when needed, look up detailed references not to copy from, but to be inspired by. Don't want to be mean, but the mindest of having it look "perfect" kills all spontanity that can give paintings their magic. And as long as paintings are meant as people pleasers and not to express what you feel this have less of an impact. Just my two cents, thank you for talking about this subject!

And still, sometimes the quick spontaneous works of art are so much more alive than the stiff, realistic, pkanned ones. It really depends...so I'm not sure the title you picked is universal.nevertheless, nice work 😊
